Nova High News Summary

Should 16-Year Olds Drive Cars? – “Sixteen year olds can be good drivers but no driver is good all of the time”. This was the sentiment expressed by Mr. Creelman when asked the question. “A knowledge of the causes of the lapsing into poor driving is essential to all drivers and particularly to teenagers...who must remember that because of their limited experience their judgment is sometimes faulty.”….Mr George Scholes, who has been instructing teenagers in driving for 10 years, said he only wished that more people could be given the driving course – perhaps even that it could be offered as part of the school curriculum. According to Mr Scholes, statistics show that four out of five pedestrians killed in automobile accidents are non-drivers. This would prove almost conclusively that a good driver will be a good pedestrian….

Bottle Drive Pays for Strip – The American Football team raised $450 towards new equipment by holding a bottle drive on January 2, 3, and 4. The team who in previous years had borrowed equipment from West Van Wildcats decided to go it alone this year. Special thanks should go to Mr and Mrs McLachlan, who gave their time and effort to drive the family car out collecting bottles. Also to Mrs Rosetti who supplied about 3 gallons of coffee, cookies and several lunches. Bill Wedley and Mike Suddaby were in charge of the drive.

Four Students to See Capital – Four lucky students from NVHS, Joan Blundell, Judy Elliott, Eddie Jackson, and Ken McKenzie will spend two delightful days in Victoria, the provincial capital. The students, two each from Grades 11 and 12 will be among the group of delegates from the province’s high schools who annually pay a visit to witness their Legislature in action. While in the Parliament Buildings they will sit in on the Assembly, have guided tours through the Provincial Museum, the Provincial Archives, some of the Legislative chambers and offices and they will meet the Speaker and some of the MLAs.

They will also be shown the Empress Hotel, historical landmarks, and the elite residential district of Victoria….When the NVHS group returns it will be expected to make reports to the student body.

Girls Prepare for Banquet – The Girl’s Banquet, one of the highlights of the year as far as the girls are concerned, is to be held on February 18th at 6:30 in the Community Center. This function is put on by the Girls’ League and is attended by girls only. The only boys allowed in are the Boys’ Hi-Y who will serve the dinner. Rose-Marie Ettel is the convenor of the Banquet and Brenda Walker is co-convenor….Miss Winnifred Mather, the fashion editor of the Province, will talk on “Making the Most of Yourself”. The entertainment will begin with a solo by Diana Davidson and end with a few numbers by a Skiffle group from our own school.
