One of my favourite photos of 2024, and it is not a bird! (smile)

The elusive and secretive Hermit Thrush
Photo taken 29 April 2024
When photographing hummingbirds, I sit for hours waiting for hummers to show up. In the meantime if I am lucky other birds will show themselves. This is one of those other birds, and after photographing birds for years, this is the first Hermit Thrush I have seen.
The hermit thrush is aptly named for it's retiring ways. The hermit thrush is a bird of the dense forest understory and thickets and is often heard before it is seen. The hermit thrush has an ethereal, haunting beautiful song.

This is Mocha she is a "Red Merle Miniature Australian Shepard".
Mocha is my walking partner. I started walking Mocha in Oct of last year. Bill her owner due to health reasons cannot do long walks.
When I first started walking Mocha, I didn't know there were two Australian Shepards, the Standard and the Mini, when Bill told me this, I did some research.
This is a very short history of the Miniature Australian Shepard.
The breed was developed in the 1960s in the States by artificial selection, in 2015 they were granted full recognition as a breed under the name Miniature American Shepard, I like the name Miniature Australian Shepard and use that when referring to her.
Size different.
Standard Australian Shepard
18 - 23 inches
50 - 65 lbs.
Miniature Australian Shepard
14 - 18 inches
17 - 30 lbs.

Mossy Branch: Barred Owl
I photographed this owl in the woods back of our home. It was on July the 5th this year, that was my Birthday. So, I thanked the robins for leading me to the owl, and I thanked the owl for posing for this photo. What a beautiful present they gave me for my Birthday!

Vanilla-Leaf aka Deer's Foot is in bloom.
This plant grows in moist shady forests, glades , openings and forest edges. In spots the leaves of vanilla-leaf can form a nearly continuous green carpet over the forest floor. When dried the leaves give off a sweet smell of vanilla, why it is also called deer's foot, I do not know.

On 11 May I posted a photo of Vanilla Leaf aka Deer's Foot, in that post I said that in open areas this plant can carpet the forest floor. After saying that I remembered an example of this just a stones throw from our backyard. So into the woods I went, found the area, and took this photo.

Elk
On April 7th Darwin and I had just turned the corner onto Shawnigan/Mill Bay road when a taxi driver coming our way called out of the car window, elk on road. When we got further along the road I saw two elk on our side of the road, one of the two is pictured in the first photo. I could see the remainder of the herd was still on the other side of the road. When we got down to where they were we crossed the road, and I took some photos of the remaining herd. Darwin and I then continued down the road a ways, and I turned around and watched them single file safely cross the road. It was by chance good timing and an exciting experience!
