Trojan Alumni Varsity Club Newsletter October 2025
We had 19 members present to hear about Parkland’s upcoming basketball season. Coach Ed Ohlson Jr. spoke about the boys team and states that they will have a challenging schedule but that is good for the team. He feels they will be strong this year and looking forward to a great season.
Ed Ohlson, coach of the girl’s team, says that he has 12 girls returning and it will be challenging to decide who will play since they are all strong players. They had great summer tournaments with few losses.
The meeting was called to order. Jeff Grim reported that our investments increased by $1000 since last month with a total of $233,404. This will fund our scholarship program for many years to come without a need for fund raisers.
Hank stated that the board met last month and voted to continue holding monthly meetings at HOPS Fogelsville next year. Jeff will check on pricing for food.
The members voted on having a December meeting without a speaker. This will be a social holiday event. It will be December 2 at HOPS Fogelsville
Our current bylaws regarding scholarships read as follows:
The organization shall establish and award scholarships to any Parkland High School Senior Varsity letter winning athlete who shall meet the qualifications set forth by the Board of Directors. The qualifications, method of choosing scholarship recipients, the number of scholarships, the number of scholarships, and the method of payment will be determined by the board.
The board is proposing an amendment that will allow athletes that do not receive a varsity letter but compete and represent the school in athleticclubs, such as power-lifting and ice hockey, to apply for scholarships. The proposed amendment is as follows:
The organization shall establish and award scholarships to any Parkland High School Senior Varsity letter winning athlete who shall meet the qualifications set forth by the Board of Directors. The qualifications, method of choosing scholarship recipients, the number of scholarships, the number of scholarships, and the method of payment will be determined by the board. The requirement for Varsity letter holders shall be waived if applicant is a member of an athletic club team that represents Parkland High School in local, state, or national competitions.
The amendment was presented and passed unanimously by members present. The school will be notified to include these athletes in the application process.
Elections -The floor was opened for nominations for officers and board members for next year. There were no nominations but this will remain open until next month’s meeting. If anyone is interested in serving, please contact an officer or board member prior to the November 4 meeting. The current board and officers have agreed to be on the ballot and serve next year.
Our election will be held on November 4 which is actually election day so please remember to get out and vote before coming to the meeting!
There was no further new business from the members so the meeting was adjourned.
Next Meeting November 4, 2025
HOPS Fogelsville
6PM
The speaker will tentatively be Sawyer Marsteller.
Sawyer is a senior at Parkland High School and a member of the baseball and ice hockey teams. He serves as a bat boy for the Iron Pigs as well. This should be interesting to hear about how his Iron Pigs experience helps him with his athletic career.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone there.
