Trojan Alumni Varsity Club Newsletter                                               Nov 2023

The November general membership meeting was our last meeting for the year and was well attended.  We had 24 members and 2 coaches.  Our guests were the Varsity Girls and Boys Basketball head coaches.   They spoke about this year’s teams and the outlook for the season.  Ed Ohlson is the coach of the girl’s team. He said there are 5 seniors this year and the team will be very competitive.   Cumberland Valley is on the schedule and they are expected to be one of the top teams in the state so this will be great experience for the team.  Looking ahead, there is a very strong sophomore class and many middle school players.  He invited club members to practices which are held 5:30-7PM every night except Wed.  He asked that if interested in coming to practice to please call him first.  The first scrimmage is scheduled for Nov 25 at 1PM.

The new head coach of the boy’s team is Ed Ohlson, Jr.  He is a former PHS basketball player and has been involved with the basketball program for 13 years.  There are 3 starters returning this year and 10 seniors on the team.  He is making some changes in team performance strategy this year and the team is spending more time in the weight room training to increase their size and strength.  The schedule this year is the hardest one they have had in several seasons.  He is working with his dad to schedule some boy-girl double headers this year, if possible, to work it into the schedule.

Both coaches thanked the club for the invitations to speak to the members and for the support of the teams from the club.  After the coaches’ presentations Bob Banzhoff reviewed new rule changes for basketball.  It was very informative and the coaches seemed to enjoy it also!

The meeting was called to order.

  • The current officers and board have agreed to serve next year.  The floor was open for nominations for officers and board members for next year but since there were none a verbal vote was taken to officially elect the slate.  The current officers and board members were unanimously elected to serve for 2024.
  • Dine and Donate night at PJ Whelihan’s Tuesday, October 10, 2023.  It was a successful evening with the club receiving $150 from the sales.  The club also received $100 donation toward the evening which brings the total to $250.
  • Rick is still pursuing vendors to engrave the bricks for the monument.

The floor was open for comments from the members.

  • Dale Ritter offered 2 greens fees for golf at The Steel Club.  No one was able to use them but if anyone is interested, please contact Dale.

At this point, the meetings will be held at HOPS Fogelsville again next year.

Our first meeting in spring will be April 2, 2024.

The officers and board wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a safe, healthy and wonderful holiday season.
