Glenn,

Thank you so much for your support in getting classmates to attend the reunion.  We never know what tomorrow brings and like you said who know how many of us will be around for the 60th.  This will be a wonderful time for us to all gather and enjoy the reunion.  I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and to enjoy the event.

Peggy

Thank you Glenn for your message to our classmates.

I sent the following letter to 80 classmates via various media, including "snail mail" (I'm leaving out some of the information as it's on this site) I appreciated the replies that I received.

Dear Friends in the Class of 1968,

I hope this message finds you well.

It's hard to believe that it's been 55 years since our graduation from Paramount High school. It would be nice to see you at our class reunion.

Please join us and renew old friendships, talk aobut the "god old days." remember the days of our yuth. Catch up on what classmates have been doing and how and what they are doing now.  We'll make some new memories. We manny not have another chance. Almost every month I get a message that another classmate, another dear friend, has passed away. As Gelnn Black stated, some of us won't be around for the 60th reunion and this might be our last time together. Sad, but true. It seems like it was only a few years ago that we were playing dodgeball in elementary school (mine was Captain Collins), dressing and feeling embarressed in P.E. classes in junior high school, and having our first date in high school. But in reality, it was a long time ago. But the memories are with us, good memories.

Don Dyne and I have put together some slide shows with over 200 photos. Some of the photos are from our high school and junior high school days.  We've tried to include as many classmates as we could. I'd like to include more photos. If you could scan photos of your days at P.H.S., junior high and elementary school please do,  e-mail them to me. I'll include them.  moverstreet@sbcglobal.net. You can contact me via facebook as well.

If your are unable to attend, we would still love to hear from you. I know that many of you read the post but you haven't written. Please do.  There is also a facebook page, " Paramount Class of 68 and Others".  Old news is new news to us.

I hope to see you at the reunion!

Most sincerely,

Mark Overstreet

I feel that it's appropriate to add Rosie Roudebush(Amaro) to our site. Rosie was a class ahead of us and married Larry. They have three beautiful daughters and six grandchildren.

Rosie was beautiful person. Right before we graduated she invited a group of us over for a graduation dinner. I never forgot that. I did the same for my son and daughter when they graduation.  Rosie and Larry moved to Santa Rosa where Rosie made a career of helping others as a nurse.   God Bless her soul, and God Bless all those who love her.

Here's some older photos;    The Crown Creamery dates back to the 1890s!  Lincoln Elem., looks about the same. The old building (sign says market) is still there.  Paramount used to have the largest "Hay Market" in the world!  There were annual Hay/Dairy parades.  My aunt and uncle took us to one back in the 50's.  An there was that sweet tasting Boones Farm, that replaced the cheap Red Mountain wine.  Now, Stella Rosa is the popular sweet, sweet tasting wine.

When I tell people about going to Paramount High, I always mention the dairy farms, our swimming pool (when the West side of the field by the R.R. tracks would flood), that some of the streets were still dirt, the Tastee-Freeze, and the wonderful times I had with great classmates (and the pretty girls).  Our sports teams played the best teams, not only in Southern Cal, but the state and even the nation (ask me which teams).  See you soon God willing.

Funeral services for Martin Thomas Thurman Sr. age 73, of Priest River (formerly of Coeur d'Alene) Idaho will be Friday, February 10, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Yates Funeral Home Coeur d'Alene Chapel at 744 N. 4th Street.

Interment will be at Coeur d'Alene Memorial Gardens.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

If you would like to send cards to Lynne and her family, her address is as follows:

Lynne Thurman

On a special note, Heaven diffinitely received a special angel. Martin was one of the nicest warm hearted persons I have had the pleasure of meeting. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather to his family. A very family devoted, loving, funny guy. May he rest in peace.

With love to all,

Lorene

Dear Lynne,

I am so very sorry to hear that your dear husband passed away. I am praying for you and your family. I pray that your memories will fill your life with joy even though this time is the worst for you. May our Lord comfort you and your family every day. A long loving marriage is a wonderful thing. It is a blessing from God. You are a special person and I know God brought you and Martin together and God has you in the palm of his hand during this time.
With love and prayers,

FYI
How much we have changed in One hundred years

The Year is 1923
The year is 1923, "One hundred  years ago." What a difference a century makes! Here are some statistics for the Year 1923

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years. Fuel for cars was sold in drug stores only. Only 14 percent of homes had a bathtub. Only 8 percent of homes had a telephone. The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph. The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower. The average US wage in 1922 was 22 cents per hour. The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year. A competent accountant could expect to earn $2,000 per year. A dentist earned $2,500 per year. A veterinarian between $1,500 and 4,000 per year. And, a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year. More than 95 percent of all births took place at home Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION! Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND in the government as "substandard." Sugar cost four cents a pound. Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen. Coffee was fifteen cents a pound. Most women washed their hair once a month . and, used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo. Canada passed law prohibiting poor people from entering into their country for any reason. The Five leading causes of death were: 1 Pneumonia and influenza 2 Tuberculosis 3 Diarrhea 4 Heart disease 5 Stroke The American flag had 45 stars ... The population of Las Vegas , Nevada was only 30. Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet. There was neither a Mother's Day nor Father's Day. Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write And, only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school. Marijuana, heroin, and morphine were available over the counter at local drugstores. Back then pharmacists said: "Heroin clears the complexion, gives buoyancy to the mind, regulates the stomach, and bowels, and is a perfect guardian of health!" (Shocking?) Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help... There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. I am now going to forward this to someone else without typing it myself. From there, it will be sent to others all over WORLD.

I received this message from Millard Thacker

If you would please let everyone know that Coach Rittenger passed suddenly this past Friday. He was 90 years old. Memorial services are still in the planning stage I’ll try to share more information as I receive it from the family. In respect to the family I’m limiting my questions to them but his daughter will keep me updated.

I remember Mr. Rittenger very fondly.  He was my first-ever PE teacher at PJHS in 7th grade.  He always inspired me to to my best, even if my best wasn't very good.  Sorry to hear of his passing.

By the way -- I drive up from my home in San Diego every Wednesday to rehearse with my men's chorus, the Masters of Harmony, in La Mirada, just 9 miles from Paramount High on Rosecrans.  If you want a surprise, look at this video of us winning our barbershop harmony society gold medal in 2017.  (I'm in the second row sixth from the left.)

We'e putting on a show at Citrus College on June 11.  Info at

If any of you boys can carry a tune, you might come by some Wednesday and say, "Hi!"

I have a power point with almost three hundred photos.  The photos are of Paramount classmates.  Some of the photos go back to 1968!  Elem. School, Jr. High, and High School photos.

It also includes photos from our past reunions, going back several decades. Photos that some of you sent me and more.

I'm trying to figure out how to send it via e-mail.  Until then if you'd like a copy I will bring my computer so that you can get a copy (free of course).  You'll need to bring a flash drive or DVD.

I'd like to share them with you.  If you have photos to add, bring them on a flashdrive and I'll work on downloading them.

I'm looking forward to seeing and talking with you.  So many wonderful memories.  So many of our friends have passed away. As I reviewed the photos last night, I have mixed emotions from happy to sad.  I don't

know when we'll see each other again.

God Bless you all,

Mark Overstreet

Rosa, Elivis, and I had a wonderful time at the 55 Year Reunion!!!        Thank you to the Reunion Committee,  Peggy, Marianna, Fred, and Don.  As Larry Rodabush and I stated, organizing the event took a lot of time, energy, effort, money(ahead of time), and "love."  Thank you all again.

Thank you to all our classmates who made the trip to Las Vegas to be together.  I tried to get a photo of everyone, but some of them were too dark.  I'm working on a way to get the 350 photos on my power point to you.

Elvis was a great suprise!  I'm a fan. We've been to Tupelo, MS., Graceland, and have two autographs, and six albums.

A few years ago I was at Art Salazar's house. Cheryl played "Love Me Tender" and asked me if I liked the song. I said yes and that I liked Elvis' songs.  It turned out to be a tape of Art singing the song!.  I thought that it was Elvis singing.

Great turn-out of classmates.  Firday night get together and then a delicious banquet meal, entertainment by Elvis, drinks, a raffle (almost everyone won something), drinks. Dancing, more dancing, and more dancing.  We are 73 years young.

Friday evening at the Red Zone Cocktail lounge. The lighting was blue so the photos are tented (I edited them as best as my computer would allow).  Good friends, Good times. Us Captain Raymond Collins Elementary School "kids" forgot to get together. I'll blame it on Johnny Walker, Elijha Craig, and Jack Daniels.

Rosa and I had a wonderful time. I had a good time in high school and enjoyed having you all in my life.  Some of you were my neighbors, some of you went to school from kinder all the way through high school. Some of you helped me grow emotionally, socially, and mentally.  Some of you captivated my heart.  There are many who are gone and I think of them often.  I look forward to being with you again.
