Mark,
You are so funny, but what you said was so true "avoid the doctors office" to stay well. I was thinking of that all day long, wondering if I should cancel my appointment that had been made a month ago. I lucked out and I was the only patient in there.

Pat I do agree with you about how the media.

Sandy, I hope and pray that Zoey will get over her bug soon. I wouldn't think twice about keeping my kids out of school the rest of the year!!!

Everyone stay safe, have fun at the mini reunion in Vegas and takes lots of photos.

Seems like our forum is starting to get back to being fun again. So good to see the new photos and hear about what is going on with everyone out there.

How many of you are going to fly to Las Vegas for the reunion? If you are flying do you think you will wear a mask on the plane? I hear there is a big shortage on the mask now. I have a couple stashed just in case, scary stuff.

Mark,
I came across across a site that publishes old yearbooks from junior high schools, high schools, colleges and even the military. They have a Compton College yearbook to download from 1968. Also, some Kansas schools. It shows previews of all of them and then charges a fee for total access. You can even send in old yearbooks and they will publish them and return them plus pay for all shipping charges. The site is called E-Yearbook.com

Pat Kuester (Bowen)

Neta, I think this sounds like a great project for a newly retired school teacher. You know, busy hands are the devil's workshop.

Carol Maddex (Switzer)

Amen to that....hummm maybe we can make Mark our official class historian.

Neta, Thanks for the info. about E-Yearbook. I took a look. I kept my Compton Yearbooks. I was on the cross-country and track teams.

Pat, I enjoyed the class pictures you posted from Roosevelt Elem. I recognized some of the kids. Is Roosevelt across from Randy Roberts Office or is(was) it North of Rosecrans?

Carol, You kids have done a great job to save our history! This site is loaded with information about our history. The pictures are here for future generations.

Lynn, Thanks for the good words.

I keep my hands busy. The devil won't catch me being idle. I substituted five days out of the last ten. More than I wanted to, but two of the days were in my wife's classroom. Which is a nice group of children. The class today constantly tattled on each other and whined and tattled and... Some days are like that.

Mark, Your last class sounds like the place where I work.

Roosevelt was just barely in Paramount, between Century & Gardendale and Paramount Blvd & Downey Ave. We had kids from Paramount, Downey & Hollydale.

Our family did all of our shopping and banking in Hollydale.

Wow, you guys sure do have some great memories. You continue to amaze me with all the street locations and buildings you remember. It makes me wonder if I should consider getting a room at the Alzheimer's facility with my mom. Geez......lol

Mark, I think I might try to figure out a way to take a few photos of the 1942 Yearbook of my dad's and post on my profile for you. I will give it a shot later today, and see if I can make it work.

Hope everyone has a great week end.

What happened to Gary Buice, Randy Farina, Mike Lampman are you guys still out there reading the forum?

Patricia Hamilton (Denham)

Lynne, try using the macro setting on your camera to take the pictures of the yearbook. You can get pretty close that way.

My aunt was supposed to make prints of some photos of my grandmother for me and never got around to it so when I went to visit her, I set them on a chair and photographed each one. They came out beautiful. I have them framed.

This is a pretty scary thought. My granddaughter got her driver's license yesterday. I told her they must be giving out driver's licenses at a younger age since she can't be old enough to get one. LOL

Hi Pat
I will have to try that, as you can see I am not doing very well.

Mark, hang it there I took a few of the old buildings.
I will work on it this evening after dinner, dishes, and all those "domestic goddess" chores. :-)

I think that I may have mentioned that one of my hobbies is genealogy. Well I have been trying to find the family of a great grandfather. I finally found them and have since found someone's family tree with this family. I am a direct descendant of William the Conqueror. I am sure this has to be true; hence my aversion to domestic duties and my affinity to being catered to. I don't know where this person is getting their information, but hey, we have to be a descendant of someone, why not William the Conqueror? Better than Billy the Moatdigger, correct?

05/02/09 08:52 PM #2253

Lynne Scales (Thurman)

Hey Pat,
What's wrong with Billy the Moat digger? I think he is my brother....you crack me up.

OK, folks I am done with the picture thing I can't get the hang of it.

Mark and anyone else who may be interested. The Elementary School across from Randy's office is Lincoln. I think it was the first and only one in Paramount, for quite some time. I think in 1988 was the one hundredth anniversary of Lincoln Elem. I went to the celebration with my Mom and we stood with Randy. Mrs Jackson, who was Principal at Lincoln when we went there made a speech that day. She was pretty remarkable I think she was about ninety-five at the time. Randy went to her house for regular Spanish classes so he could converse with his patients. My Mom went to Our Lady of the Rosary on Paramount Blvd. to a senior citizens Spanish class every Tues. for quite some time. She would pick up Mrs. Jackson and then Mrs. Jackson stayed and had dinner with the sisters and one of them took her home. I could go on about Mrs. Jackson. She was very helpful to my Mom when my Dad died. My Mom was only 64 when he died and Mrs. Jackson inspired my Mom to get out there and continue to live!! ... Oh yeah, I think Randy would be the first to admit he spent some time in Mrs . Jackson's office in sixth grade. If I'm wrong, Randy, I'm sorry....Sandi

Peggy Steiner (Miller)

Sandi,
You are so right Mrs. Jackson was a remarkable woman. She was always so nice to everyone. Lincoln Elem. had all of my brothers and myself. There are some of us classmates that all went to Lincoln from day one and still stay in touch with each other. What a long history we have had together.

Lorene BuSteed (Householder)

Ok, now Lincoln elementary school brings back some fond memories. I remember Ms. Jackson, she truly was a remarkable woman. I went to Lincoln Elementary from K-3. I will dig up my class pictures and post them. My sisters and I used to walk to Lincoln every day and stopped by the bird sanctuary on the way to and from school. My mom was very active in PTA at Lincoln, do you remember the popcorn and ice cream that the PTA sold at lunch time? Yummy I had Miss Howse (sp?) for kindergarten, Mrs. French, Mrs. Turpentine and I forgot the other one. Mrs. Turpentine hit my hand with a ruler, I will never forget it. She made a believer out of me, I do believe I was talking when I was supposed to be listening, never had my hand hit again.

Was out at the ranch on Sunday helping my mom get things ready for a huge (Estate Sale)yard sale on Saturday. Anyone wanting to come browse - Take the 215 towards San Diego, exit Nuevo Road, head East on Nuevo Rd to the end, stay to the right, go up the hill, turn LEFT on Hanson, turn a quick RIGHT at the first dirt road, head east, go to the second ranch (Sleepy Hollow) turn in the entry, you will see the garage sale right away.

Well I put a new door knob on my mom's house on the entry door. I had to drill a hole through the door to put the new knob on. Fixed the fireplace, put new glass surrounding the fire place and placed stepping stone in the yard. Just call me Josie, ya see our father not only raised four girls but four girls who can fix/repair things.

Take care everyone.

Lorene

Lynne Scales (Thurman)

Hi Lorene,
You know I am beginning to think that the women of our days, could do a great deal more than the younger women of today. Our dads did teach us to do a few things so we did grow up being more independent don't you think?

However, I think Maurene takes the cake on most of us. She still continues to amaze me with her car rebuilding, house remodeling, and plumber work. I don't think I can match her in the least. Now you may even have me on the installation of the new door knob? I think I may have tried that once, and the lock ended up on the inside of the door....lol...just kidding.

Sounds like things are going better at the ranch, you are such a good daughter.

I'm still battling this darn cold, but I did go out to the lake yesterday and did a few things in the house. I just have no energy and feel so tired. My cough seems a little better today, but my head is still hurting.

Maybe it's just a good day at the beach I need, well maybe a few days......hummm?

Love you my friend,
Lynne

Mirtha Camacho (Rayburn)

Sandi,Peggy and Lorene,

Thank you for some additional fond memories of Lincoln. I always wondered what happened to Mrs. Jackson. She was great, I recall the numerous times that she and her Spanish had to help my family out when we first arrived not only to Paramount but to the USA. The last time I saw one of my elementary school teachers was my second grade teacher, Mrs. Davis and I ran into her in Naples when I was taking my children trick o treating, so it has been quite a while.

Anyone remember Mr. Casadi, Ms.French Mrs. Jones and Ms. Gruner? I remember Ms. Guner especially because she came over to our house to to tell my mother that my brother Joe had been talking in class again and when she went to strike his hand with the ruler, he told her that she couldn't do that and when asked why he informed her that I had said so, hence the visit. Those were the good ole days!

05/04/09 04:35 PM #2259

Sandra Harris (Lint)

My goodness, hands getting smacked with rulers! Ouch. I had Mrs. Gruner as well. That's the class I learned all my Spanish in. I had Mrs Britt in 5th and Mrs Jones in 6th. I always thought she was kinda grumpy. She called me Harris almost all year. How rude! Do you guys remember learning the Gettysburg Address and reciting it almost every morning for the longest time? Oh yeah, Ms Jackson retired from Lincoln and joined the Peace Corps in 1963. She was in Peru for several years and when she came back she taught at Compton College, I think. When my Mom was taking that Spanish class at Our Lady, Ms Jackson was also teaching English to Spanish speaking adults at Paramount High night school. What a great lady. She never quit teaching. She was still living when we moved to Arizona in 1991, I know she passed away but can't remember the year. Such an inspiration!

At Wesley Gaines Elementary we had a sixth grade teacher named Mr. Kleinberg. He loved giving the boys swats with a wooden paddle with holes in it. Did in right in front of the whole class. It was terrible. And if he caught you chewing gum, he'd make you wear it on the end of your nose. Anyone remember that. Gloria? Marianna? Patsy?

05/04/09 08:14 PM #2261

Peggy Steiner (Miller)

Hi Mirtha,
I do remember Mr. Cassidy (1st grade), Mrs. French & Mrs Jones (6th) - wow was she a grumpy one. In 3rd we got bussed to Mokler and I had Mr Reis and 5th was Mrs. Britt - she was so nice and I had Mrs. Bendikson - but can't remember for what grade.- I think she was my favorite teacher thru grammer school. Gosh this sure does bring back memories doesn't it? I only wish I had those school pictures, my Mom kept them, but those goofy brothers of mine threw everything away when my Mom passed without telling anyone.
Maybe one of our classmates will have those school pictures and will post them.

Have a great week
Peggy

Lynne Scales (Thurman)

I don't remember the exact teacher but I do remember getting caught with gum and having to put it on my nose and stand in the corner. Boy if those were the only problems this world had to deal with these days wouldn't we all be blessed?

Anyone remember the teacher from Russia, he was bald and really kind of mean. I remember him throwing a big rock across the room because "SOMEONE" was talking in class....hummm I wonder who that was???

05/04/09 08:31 PM #2263

Marianna Brown (Schechter)

Mirtha and all of the others from Lincoln Elementary....

Mrs. Jackson was a wonderful woman. I remember her being so kind and caring, ready to give out 'hugs'.

I remember Mrs. Howse (House?). I saw her at a restaurant in Long Beach in the early 70's. I was with my parents and she still looked the same. Do any of you remember "Milk" break? The cool little glass bottles and then nap time? Ahhh Kindergarten was the best!

Mirtha...I remember Mr. Cassidy (thought he was soooooo cute), first grade and Miss French, second grade. Third grade I was shipped to Mokler with Mr. Reese. Peggy was there also along with Karen Ann Cody. I thought Mr. Reese (Reis?) was the greatest!

Fourth...Fifth and Sixth was at Wesley Gaines. Yes, Phyllis, I do remember Mr. Kleinberg...meanest teacher that I ever had. He would make you do the 'duck walk' around the class and if you reached out and touched the floor...you had to start all over. One time someone was noisy in line from recess. Mr Kleinberg made all of us go out into the sun...with eyes shut...stand at attention with our faces to the sun. Mean...mean man.

Marianna..That is absolutely abusive. He'd have been written up and fired, or worse, if he'd tried that these days!! I have a question for everyone. What is the one thing you have done in life, so far, that you are most proud of? .....Sandi
