This is an article I wrote for the local newspapers. I write something each month. I wasn't able to copy it, so I'm typing it in. To Honor and Remember; Memorial Day
In today's world, with the daily struggle to keep from getting caught in the millstream of the economic crises along with all of the other facets of life that consumes our attention, most people give little thought to the meaning of Memorial Day. For most people, it's an occasion for a three day weekend. Some dedicated souls will venture to the annual parades, some will go to a veteran's memorial. Then there are those who contemplate with their heart and soul, the true meaning of Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday for us to remember soldiers killed in wars. The origins of Memorial Day go back to 1866 as a ceremony to honor soldiers killed in the American Civil War. Least we forget, Memorial Day is a time to honor and remember those who served in the military of the United States of American and were killed doing their duty. For many Americans, everyday is a time to reflect and honor their loved ones who died in the course of duty, in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, Afghanistan. Those of us who served in a combat zone, I was in Vietnam, remember our friends that were killed. I think of one friend in particular, a young man who had a quiet demeanor and a friendly smile. His family never saw him get married, have children, graduate from college or grow to become an old man. They will never share BBQ's or holidays with him. In the movie :Saving Private Ryan", in present time, Ryan is at the gravesite of Captain Miller, the man who was sent to take Ryan home and who was killed. Captain Millers last words are to Ryan, "Earn it." Back to present time, the elderly veteran asks his wife to confirm that he has a led a good life and that he is a "good man", and thus worthy of Miller's and the others' sacrifice. How then can we honor our fallen soldiers? We can honor them by making this a better world, everyday. To treat others with respect, to be honest, to be responsible citizens, and to be loyal to the concepts of liberty and freedom. =========================================================
God Bless all of you and those that you love. Mark
