Susan Kellogg

Artist, and as of 1995, a board certified art therapist. I trained at the George
Washington University and at Walter Reed. I have had two marriages, two divorces, two children and three 1/2 grandchildren. I moved to a village near Austin (San Leanna) recently and love it. Both children are nearby and have been successfully dealing with a rare type of a rare disease(Wegener's Granulomatosis/now called granuloma polyangiitis) for 11 years. Death's door became a hangout for me for a while but now with a new medicine, Retuxan, have been in remission for a couple of year. I am proud of having participated in its clinical trials.
After a transient youth, common to all of us, I lived in Arlington, VA for 33 years, and now am back in Texas, where I was born. Medical care here in Austin is in a primitive state, but they have just funded a new Medical school at UT.
I loved my senior year in Paris and have been back several times. I am still in touch with a couple of old friends from there (Jackie Somers and Glenn Rhodes).
Am I the only graduate who became a liberal?

The great contrasts in the life of a military brat were made most clear by the following. My younger sister, Ann and I spent two high school years in the American school at Kaiserslautern, Germany. During this time we lived in a grand chateau on the plateau overlooking the town of Nancy, France. I mean grand, Louis XV furniture and a marble fireplace in my room.
In my senior year, we moved to a trailer (not so grand, the roads were not even paved) in Evreux and started the year at Chateauroux. We put in a desperate call to our mother when we found ourselves in a tiny school with hardly any cute boys! She found us a place to live with a wonderful couple, outside Versailles (not inside Versailles, alas) and we started school at PAHS a little late. Mr. Hardin, our vice principal, lived with the same couple...an entree to sophistication! We had great fun. We fell in with some nice friends, One of whom was imaginary, (like Prokoffieff's Lt. Kije) whom we signed up for the Chorus trip, learned French, and had many hilarious train trips back and forth from Gare St. Lazare to Evreux, fortified by world class chocolate eclairs. How lucky we were. Too bad youth is wasted on the young!
One story; I remember M. Straub's laconic response to someone's throwing something that exploded loudly on the blackboard (a cherry bomb, I think). He turned to the class and said, with some disdain, "You cannot frighten me; I was in the war." This response jerked us back to the reality of why we were there and was a terse and poignant lesson that there was a level of seriousness to life that we had not reached...some of us, anyway."
