I have retired from both the U.S. Army (Medical Service Corps) and from NASA. I am currently keeping myself busy by researching the life and times of my great grand-uncle James C. Walker (Lt. Col, CSA).
"Uncle James" served during the Mexican War as an assistant surgeon at Fort Kearney, Nebraska. During the Civil War he served on both the Baylor and Sibley expeditions, where he commanded Co. D, 2nd Texas Mounted Volunteers and briefly commanded Fort Stanton, NM. He commanded the 2nd Texas Cavalry during the Battle of Galveston and during the first part of the Louisiana Campaign. He retired to Hallettsville, TX after being "killed" at the Battle of LaFourche Crossing in 1863. He died in 1876.
Researching that interesting history should keep my wife and I traveling for the next several years as we visit the various sites where "Uncle James" lived and served. I just hope I'm up to it!
