Comments:

We returned to the States after 4 years in Paris in the summer of 1956. Dad was assigned to the Pentagon. We lived at Fort Myers, South Post. Dad then got assigned to the White House in the White House Communications. We then moved to Purcellville in Loudoun County Virginia. I went to the University of Oklahoma in Norman, OK, from fall of 1959 thru January, 1963. Got a BA in English. Then returned to the DC area, where my family was. In 1967, I took a job with Crawford and Company, Independent Insurance Adjusters. I was assigned to the DC office. I got an apartment in Arlington, VA, with two of my co-workers. My future wife lived in an apt on the ground floor with two co workers from the Pentagon. I lived on the 3rd floor. Is that a natural or what? We married in August, 1965, and we will celebrate 43 years together this August (2008). We bought a house in a Levitt development in Fairfax County, Greenbriar. It was out by Dulles Airport. Wilma is a lovely woman who hails from the Shenadoah Valley, Harrisonburg, Va. She attended Madison college there (now James Madison Universtiy, JMU). We continued to live in Fairfax until 1974 when we moved to Georgia. But first, I changed employers in 1971, when I joined Geico. Geico opened a Regional office in Macon, Ga in 1974 and we moved there in 1974. We have been here ever since. Nice town. Come see us if you can. Macon has a Cherry Blossom Festival every year in late March or early April. The festival is always 2 weeks long and finishes about a week before Easter. When the blossoms come out during the Festival, Macon becomes a fairy land. It is simply gorgeous. Without the festival it is gorgeous. Not only are there the cherry blossoms but the azaleas are usually in full bloom, the Bartlett Pears, the Dogwoods, etc. It is beautiful. Geico started with one building here, with capacity for 4,000 workers to handle 16 states from here. Over the years the building became too small, and a building was built across the street, with a capacity for 4,000. I don't know what the number of associates is now, but it is something above 5,000 here in Macon, making Geico one of the largest employers in the area. It has been a great place to live and to raise our kids. It has become home to me, but that is not surprising. Wherever we ended up over the years became my home. But, Macon has become home to my wife and kids too. We have two grandchildren, Ryan, age 16 and Ethan, age 12. Both are very smart, just like their Daddy, Chris. Brad does not have any kids yet. Chris is going to have a new daughter in maybe Sept this year. Sorry to run on and on, but I wanted to be reasonably complete in answering the question.

School Story:

We lived in Villennes sur Seine. I went into Paris, one evening, on the train. I really don't recall what I told the folks I was going to do, but a friend and I planned to spend the evening in Pigalle. We did. I rushed to Gare de Lyon (I think) at around midnight, only to find that the last train to Villennes had just departed. My friend lived in a different town and his train was there and ready to go. Stranded in Paris, middle of the night. No money. Spoke just a little French. What to do? Well, as I walked back out the front doors of the Gare and saw a bank of taxis, it seemed the most logical thing to take a Taxi. So I went to the front of the line and the first driver refused. Villennes is about 20 miles out. The second driver said he would take me but he wanted to know how I would pay. I told him my parents would be there and they would pay. When we got to my house, nobody had much money. We gathered everything that everyone had and finally satisfied the cab driver. I am forever grateful to that driver. He rescued a scared teen age foreigner. It was scary to be alone in a foreign environment with no real idea of what might be possible or right. I don't know what I would do today if the same thing happened other than to be very careful about getting back to the Gare before the last train leaves. I believe the guy who went with me was named Burke and he lived in St Germain en Laye. We did have a memorable time in Pigalle. Worth the subsequent angst? NO, I don't think so. I don't recall what my punishment was, but it was significant.
