DeGrasse Village

Who or what influenced you most at PAHS?

I arrived in Paris half way thru the fourth grade and left half way thru the seventh.
While waiting for housing at DeGrasse Village, we lived in a hotel in downtown Paris just off the L'Etiole. Walking our dog every morning, taught me the boulevards, Avenues and Alleys of Paris. I'd forget to go to school and just keep walking until well after the bus left.
Once we moved to DeGrasse, that dog taught me how to train dogs. He also kept me sane as I was having a tought time dealing with all new friends.

What were your favorite places or things to do in Paris as a PAHS student?

The cafe across the street made a great jambon sandwich that would hold me over until we got home.

What is one moment from your PAHS years you never forgot?

Home EC 7th grade.

Looking back, what did living in Paris during your teenage years mean to you?

I continued my French language skill, ended up working for Intertechnique (Plaisir) as a consultant commuting from Tampa.

In '62 my mother was in charge of the Teen Club (Thelma Brown). She met some of the students returning from the trip to Berlin and one of them gave her a small piece of the new wall. With all our travels she lost it.

Chuck, did you realize that Rue Marbeuf was a parking garage that they had renovated leaving the ramps. Each level of the building was a level of the garage. You could go thru a door and be near one the vehicle ramps. My brothers and I used to use those ramps.
. Also, if you are a James Bond fan, you know that Bond (MI6) meets Felix (CIA) at the cafeteria at Rue Marbeuf in the short story, "From a View to a Kill" which takes place in Paris and the back road from Camp Valeuceux to SHAPE. Nothing to do with the movie.

Leslie, do you have any memories of Mike Brown? My big brother, he taught me a lot. He was young, having turned 16 just before graduation. You might remember him from his wine glass stain.

My brother Michael passed away in 2000.  If you remember him, I'd love to hear from you.  I was 5 years younger than Mike, and was in PAS from 59 to 63 (end of 4th-thru beginning of 7th).  It was a coming of age for me.  And Mike was my mentor.
You may also remember my mother, Thelma Brown, who was head of the Teen club at Belle Manor.  Mike worked at the snack bar.

Go Pirates.
