Greg was a good friend of mine. He and I were 2 of the famous "4 Musketeers"-well famous to us. Towards the middle of Senior year Greg said that he had decided to join the Army after graduation. I saw him just once after that. He had finished his basic training, and had begun taking classes to become an Army Medic. They had given him a break and he had come home to South Pas to visit friends and family.
He had a girlfriend and lots of plans for the future. He was really doing well.
He finished his training and had become a Medic-went around saving lives. He was stationed in Colorado. There were some hikers that had gotten stranded in a canyon in Colorado and an Army rescue helicopter, Greg aboard, went to go save the day. The stranded hikers were in a small ravine and it was apparently tricky flying. The chopper landed fine, they got the hikers on board and started out of the canyon. The words I was told were "operator error"- the helicopter never made it out of the canyon and Greg was killed in the crash.
There is a plaque commemorating Greg on the ( I don't know the name of the church ) wall of the orange-bricked church at the corner of Garfield and Oak.
Thanks for sharing your memories of Gregg Penn who I remember as a very nice young man who had a good sense of humor and I recall liked to wear the army jacket so popular back in the day. . I never knew the details of what happened to Gregg. He was doing something worthy helping others. A true hero .....
