Yes, Mark I do remember Mrs. Johnston and she was crossed eyed. You did have to sit by her desk and you deserved most of those licks! I have a class photo that I am trying to get on here and hope to soon. You guys will love seeing us as 5th graders.
T-Etta is on the top row! She was one of the tallest ones.

I do remember the parties in the Stout's basement. Those were fun....

Hey Mark,
Thanks a heap for ruining a beautiful memory. That just reminded me that the most effective form of birth control at our age is total nudity....with the lights on.

Kenneth,
I would not have crossed T Etta under any circumstances. I remember Mrs. Mitchell yanking her out of her desk by her pigtails one day during class. T Etta was swinging at her and Mrs. Mitchell just kept slinging her around by that pigtail until she wore her down. Now that I think of it, I would not have fought Mrs. Mitchell either.

Hey Kenneth,

I remember T Etta Jackson really well. In the seventh grade, I was coming out of a class when she slammed me into the lockers and pinned me to them before I knew what was happening. I saw her face and a raised fist just as someone behind her said " not Him ". She punched me in the gut just for the benefit of those watching and said " sorry ". I was sure I was about to become a locker decoration. I am still happy to be " not him ". I never knew what it was all about and I was not going to ask.

Does anyone remember our Jr. High English teacher? I think her name was Mrs. Clark. Maybe you will remember the day she backed up to the chalk board and got chalk dust all over her seat. As she walked around the class checking everyones work, I believe it was Don Morris that patted her behind to remove the dust resulting in her slamming a book down on his head and screaming to go to the office. Going to the office was his salvation, she was mad enough to kill someone.

Jerry,
I cannot recall a Mrs. Smith's English class, I do remember a Mrs. Sharp that we had as Seniors and she swore that we had not had Jr. High Grammar and gave us all a 8th grade grammar book to study before we went any farther. She was mean but I fared better in my English classes at Tech than my sister had.

Does anyone remember Mr. Barron's Class in the 7th or 8th grade. He was sick alot and we had Mrs. Whitten (Bill's wife) for most of the year. I think it was history or geography. We had a hayride at the end of year and he almost bounced us off the trailer.

Did anyone every have a run in with Gordon Gatewood?

OK Becky shamed me into it---so here I am.
W.C. Teel's Memorial Service is Saturday 11am First Methodist Church.
Becky, you know our thoughts and prayers are with you, your Mom, and your whole family. May you find comfort in the caring of friends.
Don, so sorry to hear about your Mom. Our prayers are with you too at this difficult time.

Hi Marcia, glad you found us. Be sure to jump right in there with all those memories.

Thanks for the updated info on the services. Hope to see you Saturday.

OK, Kenneth, I confess. Joe Don and I raced for the same desk in a 7th grade class and the teacher walked in about the time we both tried sitting in that chair. He summoned Gordon and I can tell you that I got licks, don't remember if Joe Don did. How 'bout you, KB, Gordon ever get you?
I want to know if any of you gals ever got paddled. They didn't know what to call it then, but I assure you the teachers were "profiling"! That means the teachers were expecting the guys to mess up, so they watched us and the gals got away with murder.

Don and Becky. My prayers certainly include you and yours during these trying times.

My exposure to Mr. Gatewood happened before and after I was a student of his. At the age of 5, my parents had sent me in the school go get my sister when school was out. It had rained and my mission was to get her before she got on the bus. Now when I was 5, I had a red cap I wore 24/7 and I was walking down the hall, cap on head when I heard "Hey you monkey, we don't wear caps in the school." I paid no mine since it wasn't my dad's voice and the next thing I knew was this very tall, mean looking man had spun me around and was repeating the "monkey line" again. SCARED ME TO DEATH, I'm sure if I didn't dirty myself I was close to it. I jerked my cap off, got my sister and returned to my parent's vehicle. Never said a word to anybody for fear of having that old man jerk me around again.

Fast forward 20 years. I married, farming at Tulia and as I was turning by Tulia Floral, headed west, there was Mr. Gatewood jaywaking halfway up that street and the mean side of me took over. I floorboarded my pick-up, smoke was forming between the tires and the brick street, and I shot towards Mr. Gatewood. I stopped beside him and asked him, "Hey you Monkey, don't you know it is illegal to jaywalk?" He just glared at me and started to shake and then I took off. I'm sure he didn't remember the "cap" episode but I had a good laugh.

For those of you who are unfortunate enough to have left "God's country"; here just south of Amarillo today it's 19 degrees, wind 40 mph and heavy snow. Tomorrow it will be sunny and in the 60s. Happy springtime! But at least it's moisture.
Glad to hear from you, Marcia, I didn't know you were still in the area. I haven't seen Gene in years, is he still cropdusting?

OK people. What happened here? Did all of you "get a life"? Guess I'm the only one here tonight.

T-Etta bit a hunk out of someone, who? I had to locker with Alberta Stell (Stell and Stout!) Never got to put my books in the locker excpet when she was out on maternity leave. Mrs. Johnson in the 5th grade tried to ruin us some way every day. She would be mad at someone, and you never know who (since se was crossed eyes) until she took a bolf ball out of her desk and thru it at you. Mark and John ended up on the floor a lot. I mostly just graded the long division papers at home. Mrs Clark was the greatest. She is the teacher that I think influenced me the most ( can't say that was all good.) She would have parties for us at her house on Saturday afternoons and it was cool! I'm proud of everyon's memories!! The parties in the basement were worth remembering. There was the one time when Lonnie was hit by the light fixture when it was knocked down! Mom would take about 20 of us to the show in one car without seat belts (didn't know they made them then). Can you imagine what would happen now and how long my Mom would be in jail if she tried it. Mark, how about those trips to Lubbock to study computers! You mooned everyone on the road between Tulia and LUbbock. I'm in Ruidoso now. It snowed on Friday and I was sun bathing on Saturday. Now the wind is blowing about 50 - feel like I am back in Lubbock. I don't have interner in my house, so I am at the local Pizza Hut Internet Bar - imressive, huh? What was the name of the "club" that was in the garage on the way to Tule Lake? I remember dancing the Funky Broadway with Walter there and Jimmy playing traps and Kenneth on guitar wasnn't it?

Talk to you later,

Mrs Teel was the wonderful. Taught me piano. Who else took from her? Love ya Becky and am thinking of you during such a tough time.

Charlotte Grantham (O'Daniel)

I was trying to think who else went to Lubbock for those computer classes. I couldn't remember.....boy, have times changed since that type of computer. Keypunch cards!

Remember putting people in the trunk of a car and going into the show so we wouldn't have to pay for everyone? It think we paid for, maybe 2 people, but really took about 6 or however many we could stuff in the trunk. I was glad I was the driver most of the time.

Sharon, The Web was the dance "hall" on the way to the lake. That was a great place and lots of fun.
Enjoy Ruidoso. Wish I was there.....

Hi! Yes we are still here in Amarillo, at least I am most of the time. We still have a home in Rolla KS and Gene is still cropdusting out of Hugoton and Elkhart. He's also doing some fire bombing for the Forest Service. You know what they say about "No OLD BOLD Cropdusters" I dont' think he'll ever quit. Too much of an adrenaline junky!
Hey Char---thanks for setting up this site. I must have too much time on my hands, I just read thru the whole message forum and had to change my Depends at least 3 times.
Gotta go pluck some chin hairs --- Later
The other Marcia or Mimi to my granddaughter.

All you old band members, be sure to read the note on the home page. The Cooks sent it along with a picture.

Kenneth: Who played in your band? didn't C.E. play the lead guitar?

Remember in Jr. High --we had seperate stair ways for the girls & the boys. I never could fiqure that one out.
It made me late to nearly every class.

04/02/09 02:59 PM #242

Michael Henthorn

I think Mr. Gatewood believed that unwanted pregnancies were caused by using the same staircase....good thing he did not know what went on in that back of the old auditorium!!

04/02/09 04:49 PM #243

Charlotte Grantham (O'Daniel)

Cliff, JH STILL has separate stairs for girls and boys. That is one thing that has not changed in 45 years.

Hey all, I found a picture of my 5th grade class and posted it in the photo gallery. Go look at it and see if you can name all the little darlings. We were so cute then. Where has all the hair gone?

If you have an elementary class photo, email it to me, and I will post it there as well. I tried to put it on the home page, but it was too large, and I couldn't get it moved over to the correct place. Too much stuff on there anyway.

Have fun this weekend....or at least pretend to.....

OK - The challenge is on... LaVeta Allen, Mark Degge, Celia Arnold, Marcia Nichols, Sharon Stout, Roland Flowers, Gharlotte Grantham, Terry Hall, John Richards, Stanley Harrison, Lee Kesler, Eddie McCaslin, Eddie Mason, Pat Ledgerwood. (That's all I can recognize.)

I would like to say that the healing support I have received from my "oldest" of friends has been wonderful. Thank you for your words of encouragement and for your continued prayers.

Aliece Sefcik (Lowe)

Becky...good eye! In addition, I see Saundra Flannigan, Margaret Luera, Vicki Thornton, and is that Bobby Kell by the teacher? Girls, do you remember when the Dr. Casey blouses were the rage in junior high? I talked my mom into making one for me and I only wore it once! And, what was the food joint across the street south of the JH where you could buy great french fries, pomegranates and lemons with salt? Oh and Big Taffies!
I remember how great it was to have Mr. Edwards for my bus driver because if we brought a dime, he would stop at the DQ on the way home and let all of us off to go buy a cone! Owww....this is making my brain hurt!

I was just trying to remember the name of that store across from the JH too. The Hornet? I think I had been told not to ever go there because I felt like I was going to get in trouble every time I did.

04/02/09 11:13 PM #249

Fred Boston

It was the Hornet's Nest.
Has Richard joined us yet on our extended trip down memory lane? Richard, you remember when our quartet got a 1 at UIL when we were 7th graders? Your brother Roger and Jim Roberts were in the group, also. I understand that Jim passed away last year.

The snack bar is where we bought those "Winner Suckers". The choice was cherry or grape. About every third one was a winner.
