Hi Kenneth. Love your memories. Thanks for sharing and reminding me about the fake snakes. I just remember seeing feet and bodies going everywhere. I am glad I was not on that cot!

I do remember that crazy guy "milking" those snakes. Terrible memory. I think I had nightmares for weeks after that.

Glad you shared the bit about KM. Maybe I can use that sometime as leverage! Ha.

No, Dorthy's did not exist until Mrs. Boyett
Retired from the school cafeteria. She is
Totally retired now and Alvin runs the cafe.
It is located right next door to where the old
Ford place used to be.

Glad to see that you are getting active in all
Of the memories.

BD, glad you invited Mr. Goen. I'd like to have pictures of that place where the buffalo trails were. Too cool!

Mike: Check with Donna on the sleeping arrangements, and I will contact Sammye.

Mark: This one goes way back to the 3rd or 4th grade. I remember you and me (someone else probably Lonny) going downtown to Heard & Jones during school hours. I was scared to death, but it was an adventure.

Does any one remember John Goen catching a rattle snake on that field trip to Spur? If it didn't happen, I have embelished the story alot.

Cliff: Donna just said "have you lost what's left of your feeble and perverted mind?"......but she didn't say no. I'll get back to ya'.

Cliff I remember meeting a rattlesnake on one of the trails, it seems that Mr. Goen killed or tried to kill it with a stick.

All the Guys: Do you remember playing "Alamo" at the football field during lunch during the "I think" the forth grade. Seems like a few people required attention from the nurse afterward or maybe worse.

I REMEMBER! Was the John Wayne Alamo movie playing downtown at the time?

I vaguely remember that the girls played under the stadium, climbing on top of that concession stand under there, I think.

Kids sure had a lot more freedom then, huh? I asked my mom what she remembers about it. She was a fourth grade teacher at the time. I asked her where in the world the teachers were while so many kids got clear over to the football field, playing long enough for some to get hurt?
Her reply: "Suddenly, during recess, we teachers noticed there were not as many children on the playground as there should have been. Woo-ee!"

Ha...good memories!

Remember those old metal fire escapes (great slides!) on the Jr. High building? Remember that big (dangerous!) merry-go-round on the playground between Central Ward and the gym/cafeteria buildng? Remember Central Ward, for that matter? Third and fourth grade for us...

That old playground equipment was wonderful! It was much more fun than any of the over-regulated hyper-safe plastic stuff kid's have to play on today.

The old Jr. High building had all sorts of nooks and crannies where we could get into trouble. Does anyone remember.....

On the north side of the building was a pit.
And at lunch time into it we'd spit.
We'd try to splatter targets,
With lugies and small objects,
Until Gatewood came out and threw a fit!

Didn't take too much to entertain us back then..did it.

I am going to change the tone of the message board for a minute from past memories to current events.

W.C. Teel (Becky's father), whom many of you will remember, is in critical condition in an Amarillo hospital battling cancer. Hospice has recently been called in. I ask that we pray for this family.

In the hospital one of his nurses is one of our own classmates, Marcia Inglis Nunn. The family is so grateful to Marcia for her love and care for W.C. She takes extra special care of him and even comes in on her day off to check on him and the family. They could not say enough about how great she has been for them recently.

Isn't it wonderful how things revolve around and friends reunite even in the most difficult of times? I am sure more of you have stories you could tell of paths crossing when least expected.....

This is the perfect medium for us to keep updated on family and one another.

Becky, please keep us posted. We are praying for all of you.

Lottie: Thanks for the heads-up.

Becky,
We are praying for an extra portion of God's mercy and grace over your entire family. May He hold you and the rest of your family in the very palm of His will and surround you all with His loving arms.

I am so sorry for this difficult time.

Somebody has reminded me of the snake event on that trip! Yes, Mr. Goen did kill it with a stick! Mmmmm...maybe it was a rock! Let me think, let me think... I can remember exactly where it was in the creek bed. I can remember coming up right after he'd made all you guys get back....maybe it was a water moccasin! LOL!

Jann, I thought I was the only one in the world that likes calf fries!
Goin, yes, I remember. Halfway through senior year, he told me in class that he knew that I chew gum in his class and that he would catch me chewing before the end of school. Well, the last week of school he caught me and I remember the paddle almost reached the ceiling when he got ready for the swing. Three in all, and they were hard! The ceilings were 10 feet, I am pretty sure.

Kenneth, I do remember playing Alamo but I'm sure it was the third grade. I got into trouble with Mrs. Middleton over something and she turned me in. Anyone remember her? When my teacher Mrs. Stewart found out I caught hell from her paddle.
Cliff, I wish I had a quarter for everytime I left campus back in Tulia. That was one thing I don't believe I ever got caught at.
Fred, Pollard caught me tipping Buttons over in his chair in class one day.........yep, he called Mrs. Caldwell to the Ag shop to be his witness. That was the closest thing to corporal punishment that ever existed at Tulia High School. I remember her hiding her face as he raised his board for the first lick. The 3rd one made my knees buckle. Pollard told me that he believed I had a problem with authority..............duh!!!!!!!!!!

Ah yes, licks, that's one thing I remember. Who was the 6th grade teacher that loved to give em? I went into the hall at least once a week all year long...got to where I didn't even mind them. Not just me, she ran a boy out to the hall at least once a day. She was pretty good looking too. Then the time we were running laps around the football field and someone (can't remember who.. Mike Crouch?) jumped up and ran along the bench, (after being told not to). Swats were administered in the shower room in front of everyone...nothing but gym shorts and a jock strap on...I remember that blood was drawn. That coach would get jail time for that today. Don't recall anyone running on the bench anymore though.
Anyone else remember the huge (at least it seemed huge) rock fight between the 2nd grade (us) and the first grade on the playground? I recall Gatewood yelling and waving his paddle in front of my nose. I was shaking in my Keds.

Another update:

Don Morris' mom, Irene Morris, passed away and the service is today, March 23rd, at FUMC in Tulia.

Don, we are thinking about you and praying for you and your family.

Latest word on W.C. Teel: he is non-responsive

Don,

I tried to send you a personal e-mail, but it got bounced back. Sorry to hear about your mom. We will be praying for you and your family. I guess we are just at that stage of our lives.....makes me sad. Let us know if there is anything we can do.

Yes, Mark, I do remember Mrs. Middleton. She was my teacher. I thought she was the prettiest lady I knew. I loved her class. Too bad you weren't in her class. She might have liked you better!

You all have been talking about the band director, Cook. I was in Lubbock, at a meeting, on Saturday and his sister came up and asked if anyone from Tulia knew her brother. I was not in band but I did have his wife for drama/speech. It really is a small world!

Boy, do I remember Glenda Middleton! She looked like Donna Reed with red hair. I remember that she would stand at the door and kiss each one of us as we left for the day. (If I only knew then what I know now!)

Mark,
Do you remember what you and I wound up in Mr. Mitchell's office with our parents for? Did it have something to do with the Alamo escapade? I can't recall if we got whipped or not. I just remember that old bald-headed fart peering over his wire rimmed glasses and chewing us out. Come to think of it, it was probably your fault!

Mike, I do remember the visit to Kermit Mitchell's office over what happened one day at the battle scene. Yep, it was my fault. I believe it had something to do with multiple violations of the Geneva Convention......Bye the way, were'nt you in Mrs. Mitchell's 5th grade class?

And hey, that thing you had for Mrs. Middleton, just consider what she probably looks like now.........you'll get over it!
Charlotte, John, Roland, Lonny, Sharon I know you remember Mrs. Johnston from 5th grade. John and I had to sit next to her desk so that she could keep an eye on us.....at the same time! (she was cross eyed) John got into trouble for squiting a water pistol in her face on Halloween. I also remember her breaking a paddle on Roland in class one day. T Etta Jackson was in our class too. What a year that was. Charlotte, I got more licks in her class than any other. I remember that you got your Cushman the year after that.

Does anyonelse remember the cool parties that Sharon had in her basement. Mrs. Stout was the greatest and if I remember correctly had a part of raising most all us.
