Hey Jerry, Wish we were all there with you on the beach.
It is a bit nippy here right now. Danny and I are spending spring break at Angel Fire. Some of our friends have a cabin there so we will be sitting in the hot tub having a drink or 2. Can't imagine you with a gray beard?
I still have my dark hair, but only my hair dresser knows.

Judy, that sounds great! I will be skiing with my 14 yr old daughter in Santa Fe this Monday and Tuesday. Hope they get more snow this weekend.

John, I heard a story recently that reminded me of that "debate" about Nam. This happened in an AP government class over at Santa Fe High School not too long ago:

The young adults were discussing the qualifications to be president of the United States. It was pretty simple. The candidate must be a natural born citizen and at least 35 years of age. However, one girl in the class immediately started in on how unfair the requirement to be a natural born citizen was. In short, her opinion was this requirement prevented many capable individuals from becoming president. The class was just taking it in and letting her rant, but everyone's jaw hit the floor when she wrapped up her argument by stating.....

"What makes a natural born citizen any more qualified to lead this country than one born by C-section?"

She had to be a blonde. They walk among us and they vote!!

I have been enjoying watching your conversations. You can learn alot by just observing. My contribution--Sammye Waldrop lives here in Farmington, NM. She was teaching high school english the last I heard. I saw her a few years ago, still a nice looking woman! See ya'll in Tulia. Cliff

Some of the stories that are being posted make me think that I did not even know what was going on everyday at school. I wonder is this the same school I was at????

Ka! We were all there...but....isn't 40+ years a good excuse not to remember some of the classes and events?(Good and bad). I remember a class with Coach Garner (Personality of the Year) and Coach (?) that taught Civics. He was fun! I also think of Mrs. Edwards (was it called meat scrapple? ewwww...!) and Mrs. Barnett who tried so hard to make us into cooks and seamstresses. My mom always had to finish my sewing projects... I hated sewing. Oh, and Mrs. Cunningham! She was a hoot! John, do your remember we got in a lot of trouble 'cause you liked to visit while we were trying to learn about Hitler and WW II?? Or maybe "we" liked to visit. And, I might even be dreaming all of that. I have been known to have "stanger than fiction" dreams. Ok...gotta go watch Oklahoma State cream Missouri in the Big 12! Our son is OSU alum and that's where our retirement dollars went to so we gotta hoot and holler for them! Go Pokes!!

Ahhhh. Latin class. I only remember playing Spades in there everyday! No Latin learned here. I do remember the toga party.....
Civics guy was Sam Ellis maybe??
How about physics? Mr. Davidson. He came out of retirement to "teach" us. And Mr. Goen in chemistry and the science club trips. Anyone remember those? I still don't know any chemistry as if I cared.

You guys are taxing my brain trying to remember all this stuff.

I can't believe all the detail about classes and teachers you guys remember.... I can only recall the first day as a freshman and graduation day. Oh yeah, I do remember Aliece slapping me during choir.

So...........that's where Cliff has been all these years.....stalking Mrs. Waldrop out there in the land of enchantment!
Charlotte, I walked into Mr. Goen's class one day when everyone was gathered around his desk looking at a tarantula he had in a glass jar. I grabbed the jar and started to unscrew the lid when Goen jumped about a foot out of his chair with shear terror on his face. I swear he soiled himself. How was I to know he had arachnophobia? He drug me out into the hall and warned me what would happen if I was sent to Atwood's office one more time. He saved me that day but I'll never forget the sweat pouring down his face!
Anyone remember Bill Neely, Coach Nentwig or Mr. Pollard?
I remember getting 5 licks from each one, of course there were others.........

Funny how some people just don't have school memories, isn't it?

Here's a youtube vid that you've probably all seen, but it's always fun to watch again.

Charlotte, I remember a science club trip - one of my all time favorite memories. We went to some ranch in the middle of nowhere and hiked a lot. We went along some river and even saw trails buffalo had made waaaay long time ago. And there was also some castration of cattle... now, *that part* is not my favorite memory. (I do like calf fries, though.) Wonder where we went. It was some cool land. I just remember running and running and running. It was awesome!

Becky Teel (Milner)

Jann: I think it was somewhere near Spur where Mr. Goen's family ranch was located. That was a fun trip, but it certainly did nothing to help us learn chemistry. Maybe he also taught biology...

Mark: With every one of your posts, I remember more and more about associating you with swats! Have you ever come up with a final count during your THS days?

Charlotte: Now I remember why I didn't have much Latin stay with me, but why am I not any better at Spades?

I remember that ranch trip with Goen. We had some really great food cooked out of a chuckwagon. I enjoyed everything about it except the restroom breaks!!!!

Since I moved here from NM, does anyone remember Mr. Noah that taught Texas History? That class was a hoot!!!

I also remember sneaking our lunches into Biology class and eating while Goen was instructing. Lunch came from the Lottaburger. Remember that place? Seems like, all I remember is food. I wonder why!!!

We are having a good Spring break in Alto,NM. It is gorgeous here.

This is indeed a small world. About 2 weeks ago, I was running through one of our diners and saw John Goen. We visited for about a half an hour. He owns a farm and ranch just outside of Seminole, TX. He is still the same affable cowboy West Texan that he was in 1969. He gave me his phone number, so after the latest postings to the forum I took it upon myself to call and invite him to the Lubbock leg of the reunion. He seemed genuinely excited and said he would make every effort to be there. Hope no one is offended. We might consider inviting other faculty if anyone knows the whereabouts of any of them....especially Sammye. If we run out of rooms she could stay with me....(if Donna says it's okay).

JD! Whaaat? I don't remember slapping you! What did you do?

Does anyone remember a class trip we took to Palo Duro? We were doing smart things like going down Devil's Slide on our butts. I still remember the cuts and bruises on the backside and had to sit on a rubber doughnut in class. The smart girls wore long pants, this dummy wore shorts but that didn't stop me!

Jann! We could use you up here since you know the castration process! All the calf fries you want!

Mark! I agree with Becky...I do remember you exiting classes on a regular basis.

Char! Yes! Coach Ellis! He was fun! Didn't learn a thing but laughed a lot!

I love all these clips of memories past! Keep 'em coming! They may never come again!!

Sam Ellis was a fun guy right up to the end. He quit teaching in the mid 70's and started farming just south of Slaton in a little burg call Southland. I saw him a couple of times a year until his death 3 or 4 years ago.
His wife said he had a massive stroke.

Does anybody remember Don Compton? He and Sam were running buddies when they were in Tulia.

Saw Richard Souter last year. His cousin lives down the street from me and called when he came to visit. He is in the Morton school district unless he retired since then.

That makes me sad! Yes, I do remember those two guys were happy and liked to have fun...isn't that what we all were there for?

Yes, I most definately remember Compton.
He taught us driver's ed.

BD I am not offended. I would love to see
Some of our old teachers.

Boy, am I having fun laughing and remembering! Yes, I do remember the guy with the rattlesnake show at Goen's science party. I remember them throwing a fake snake at a bench full of boys and the bench falling over tumbling boys everywhere! That was too fun. The food was great and I guess the trip was so wonderful due to the crowd that went. If you remember going, fill us in. I know we did it at least twice.

Mike, I would love for us to invite some of the old teachers. I am amazed at how many you guys have been seeing around or know their whereabouts. I would love to see Goen and some of the others. I saw Don Compton years ago. He was still friends with Doug Payne and Gerry and I went on a school trip and we stopped by to see him. BTW, Gerry is not doing well at all. She is home, but having many health issues. They still live in Tulia as does Juliana Howard, Shirley (Oales) Dalluge, Thalia Fulkerson, Edna Cox now Frances. I get those that were here when we were in school confused with some that I taught with 35 years ago.

Howard Pollard and Bob Painter are in Lubbock. I saw Howard this past July at Tulia Picnic. He is selling insurance. Howard hired me here for my first teaching job.

Sad to hear about Sam. I don't remember much of the curriculum, but I do remember some fun times.

My memory just had a lapse.....later

Danny wanted me to ask if anyone remembers Jimmy Joe coming around the field house sideways in his car and nearly wiping out the entire football team as they crossed the road to the practice field.

Reading back about Mike seeing and inviting John Goen, I remember the time myself and a high administration offical now working for the Tulia School System called him "Big John" at a sporting event and the next Monday during Bio II, he, Mr. Goen, devoted some "board of education" time with us right out in the hall. RE: Rattlesnake Show At Dickens

I remember like it was yesterday. I happened to be "one of the guys" sitting on an old metal cot when the gentleman opened the can marked "baby rattlesnakes" and had three spring loaded fake snakes come flying out at us.
The cot legs got buried in the ground from everyone bending backwards and everyone of us was 10' away in a split second. I thought we were had, and I guess we had been had.

I also remember eating way too much. Mr. Goen's dad was dishing out the meat and I think he gave me two Bar-b-qued round steaks plus trimmings.

Mark I remember Mr. Pollard during one activity period he walked up on Ken Miller and I as we were utililizing the empty bandhall by pitching quarters the width of it. The man had the giant smile on his face and told us to wait for him at his office. Of course his door was locked, the bell rang and everyone saw us standing outside his door waiting for him. He finially returns and asks us to have a seat. Now we are about one week from graduation when this happened, he spoke well of us, especially Ken, for aleast 20 minutes, Ken and I kept looking at each other thinking he was going to let us go without the paddle coming into play. In conclusion, he told us if it wasn't for his reputation, he would not "beat us" then he proceeding to give us 3 licks each. He must have had a high ceiling in his office because he brought each lick from way up high.

I've been trying to get caught up reading all the responses at this sight and Mark wrote something about Fred Boston's Covair and people trying to connect with KKK, I remember Johnny King tossing a M&M Peanut candy up in the air and it shattered Fred's back window in his Covair. Johnny did have a surprised look on his face.

RE: Breakfast Place: Dorothy's

Was Dorthy's know by another name in 1969? I've eaten in Tulia only a few times since leaving in 1976, always at the Mexican Food Place, I think it was the El Caminio.
One of the locals please help me. Thanks
