Ka Hughes (Wilfong)

It is so sad to hear of the loss of another classmate.  I had been thinking about Sandy for some time but was unaware of her condition.  I know our class will feel her loss and express their feelings to her family.

I have added Sandy to our Memory Page.  If you would like to make comments there, please do.

Sandy Carter (Valko)

This is Jo Carter Luther posting on behalf of my sister, Sandy Carter Morris Valko, who you have heard passed away Friday afternoon, April 13, 2012, from lung complications after surgery.  Your words of comfort are much appreciated.

I wanted to share with you the plans for her Memorial Service at Hillside Funeral Home East in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at 2 p.m.  It will be a celebration of her life and anything you'd like to share we will happily use it in honoring her and we'd be delighted if anyone wanted to travel this distance, but the service is right across from her work where her staff and all the doctors she worked with will be remembering her as a friend, coworker, and valued professional leader in the Wichita Clinic for the last 20 years, now Via Christ Clinic, a part of Via Christi Hospitals systems which is where she was in surgical intensive care for the last three weeks appx.  I believe the funeral home will publish online at www.HillsideFuneralHomeEast.com information and the obituary probably before it comes out in the paper - not sure.

We have asked the funeral home to publish her obituary in the Lubbock and Tulia papers and hope someone will send me a copy if you see one or get an extra one.  I am on facebook as Joleen Carter Luther, email at joluther@yahoo.com, or you can phone me at 316-880-1359 or even write should you like to be in touch at 2210 S. Oliver Apt 304, Wichita, KS 67218.  I would appreciate any words of encouragement as I will continue to struggle with her loss. Both my girls, Bonnie, 34, and Jacque 26, and Jacque's daughter, Ireland (4), my granddaughter are here in Wichita also, so am glad to have them close.

I will be in contact with Becky Milner and hopefully Aliece.  Richard Edwards was kind enough to be with my mom there in Lubbock when I had to make the terrible call Friday and tell her Sandy had lost her fight to survive to her planned retirement to their Arkansas home.  She and her husband had paid off and were looking to head to it in October when she turned 62.  John says she is going with him to Arkansas still, just not how they had planned at all.  Sandy's daughter Ladonda Morris and her son, Kevin Heath Morris, were both able to visit her at least once in the hospital from Fort Worth before her passing, though Sandy was not conscious.  Ladonda is 41 and has two boys, David who has a daughter, Kiley in Dayton, Texas (making Ladonda a grandmother, Sandy a great-grandmother and Don Morris a great-granddad!) and Devin who is in high school and lives with his dad in the Houston area.  Heath is married to Stacey and they have two young boys, Caleb and Carter.

Thanks again for your concerns and prayers and thoughts.  Tulia was and always will be our most special home and will always miss being there with, of course, the finest people!

Jo

I didn't know Sandy Carter really well, but my memories of her from our high school days were that she was a beautiful soul. Best wishes to all of our classmates who have recently lost family members.

I just remembered that Sandy Carter is the person responsible for my senior picture hairdo.  She was always so sweet to fix my hair for "special occasions" - picture day, first day of school, prom, etc..  The best part was how much fun we had during those sessions.  You can only imagine Jo's comments throughout the process...Precious, precious memories!

I just received an e-mail from Karen that Cy Freeman passed away.  She did not have any other details for me to pass on to the class at this time.  I am sure we will have an obituary posted soon.

I know our class will hold the family up in prayer as well as posting your thoughts and condolences.

Cliff, please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers at this very moment.  God bless each of you and give you strength to handle your loss.  Just knowing that he is in a better place helps to ease the pain.

Just got another update on Dr. Richards and it seems that he is doing well and should be home in a few days.  He apparently is giving the nurses a fit!

He will be 94 in July.  Good luck Dr. Richards.  We are praying for you.

I am always so sad to read about the deaths of the parents of my classmates.  So many were just like parents to me.  Some were always present at church or school functions, led Brownies and Girl Scouts and were leaders in 4-H.  Memories of parties and dances held at homes with parents always present.  They were always there to protect us, provide snacks, help us with fundraisers.  I remember parents freezing right along with us as we sold food at the football concession stands.  The dads would carry in cases of bottled soda and the moms would provide homemade cookies, chili for the Frito pies and gallons of hot cocoa and coffee.  They provided the trailers and the crepe paper and tissues to make floats for the parades. Do any of you remember doing that with the chicken wire enclosed cotton trailers?   What a wonderful time and place to live during our school years.

I know that I am nostalgic and long winded, but the memories are precious and seem to come flooding back when we lose our sweet parents.  Hug and kiss yours while you still can, dear classmates.

Love, Aliece

I have a few updates and I apologize for being LATE!

Wyla Byrd Miller's mom passed away in late August.  The Byrd family is such an icon for this community, providing many jobs and doing so much for the area.  Fortunately, many of the Byrd family still live here and continue to contribute to the community.

Sylvia Jimenez Rodriquez husband, Robert, recently passed away.  Sylvia still lives here and it is a blessing to see her on occasion.

Our love and prayers for both families.....

Ronnie Wilfong, Ka (Hughes) husband, has had several back surgeries.  He recently had a stimulator inserted in his back for pain control.  Ka says it is helping.  We really hope it will help.

Mike Henthorn recently had a knee replacement.  I suspect he is kicking pretty high by now.

Please help me keep you updated by letting me know when things happen.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

Classmates,

Just read in the paper this morning that Walter Oler's mom passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 4 in Plainview.  Graveside services will be at 10:30 Friday in Tulia's Rose Hill Cemetery.  Memorial services will then be at 1:30 pm in Plainview at the First Presbyterian Church.

Walter, please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you at this sad time in your life.  I never got to have your Mom as a teacher, but was very close to her in later years while teaching with your Dad.  They were both very special to me.  God bless you and your family!

Thanks, Ka, for that update.  I wasn't aware of her passing.  I taught several years with Mr. Oler and knew them both very well.  Wonderful people.

Everyone please keep Charlotte in your prayers.  She had knee surgery on Monday.  I know she will bounce back soon, but just lift her up through the healing process.

I also received an e-mail that Herbie Payne finished up on his last treatment of radiation today.

Please keep these two in your prayers.

Thanks, Ka.  I appreciate all the prayers.  I have been so blessed and I am doing very well (or at least I think I am).  Dale says it looks like a convelesant home out here!  All kinds of supplies and gadgets.

Yes, Herb is finished with his treatments.  I saw him at church Mother's Day and he looks great.  Continue prayers for him please.

Keep us posted on what is going on with you and your families so we can spread the word.

Wishing you all a wonderful summer........

If you have not heard, Granbury, Texas had a severe tornado or more on May 15.  I talked to Sharon yesterday and their place was not damaged by the tornado-----had some hail damage.  The majority of the damage was a couple miles away from her.  She didn't say, but I am assuming Don Morris' place is ok too.  Correct me if I am wrong.

We are so thankful that Sharon and family and Don and family are ok.  If you know of anyone else in any of those areas, post an update so we will know how everyone is doing.

Prayers out to you all.....
