Nola Elaine Walker Martin

I was 13 years old when I began working at Jack's North Hi Carry Out across the street from North High. I worked for Jack off and on until he made me buy the joint in 1972. He and his wife, Opal, had retired and moved to Okla. and he needed a manager. I told him I wouldn't manage it for him so he told me I had to buy it. I let him know I had nothing with which to purchase the business and he told me he'd find a way....and he did. It was probably 1978 or so when the owner of the property and building (Bessie Bickford) decided to sell it. I had no choice but to buy it to protect my business. I ran that business until I sold it in late 2004. Long story short, Frank Martin, who had been raised across the street from me on Lewellen, came along and messed up my entire game plan. We were married in Nov. 2003. The problem was that he lived in North Carolina. After commuting back and forth by one or the other of us for over a year, I sold Jack's and moved to NC. Love it here but certainly miss my friends, classmates, and customers from Jack's! Two of my children have moved here and two of them remain in Wichita....darn it! And now, as of December, 2021, we have moved back to Wichita.
