I graduated from Southwestern in 1972 with a BA in Biology, but decided I didn't want to be a high school teacher. I traveled and did various jobs, including a season in Everglades National Park, and put together slide shows which I performed at colleges around the country. Travels included hiking Grand Canyon and bicycle trips to Utah, through Mexico and along the Lewis and Clark trail.
In 1981 I returned to Southwestern for an Elementary Ed Certificate and taught at Havensville Grade School for 14 years. During those years I made nine more bicycle trips, including three coast to coast tours and all 48 contiguous states (plus Canada). In 1997 I moved to Rocheport, MO and ran a Bed & Breakfast for seven years. In 2001 a virus gave me congestive heart failure and I got a heart transplant at University Hospital in Columbia. I'm healthy now and am very happy to be alive.
After my brother, Virgil, died in 2008 our family was left with an empty farm house, so I decided to sell my place in Missouri, buy a sailboat and move back to Winfield. Last summer I made a motorcycle trip to Grand Canyon and this January I towed my boat to Florida and sailed to Key West. If the Oil Disaster doesn't ruin the Keys I plan to make this trip every winter.
