Hollis "Holli" Anne Rainwater Mathews - Class Of 1973

Hollis Anne Rainwater Mathews

January 27, 1955 – November 11, 2020

Hollis (Holli) Mathews passed away peacefully in the company of loving friends on November 11, 2020 after a year-long fight with cancer.

Holli was born and raised in the state of Texas, attending the University of Texas at Austin, attaining an undergraduate degree in business and a graduate degree in law. But Colorado was her real home. Holli moved to Morrison, Colorado in the early 1990s and fell in love with mountain living and the outdoors. She loved to hike and cross-country ski, often in the company of one of her many canine companions.

Holli also loved music, especially bluegrass and Celtic music. She played guitar and later learned to play the “fiddle”, taking particular joy in playing at musical gatherings. Holli loved to travel, especially to the United Kingdom but also to other European countries as well as India. She loved history and was particularly fond of historical movies and television shows. When watching with friends, Holli enjoyed sharing stories of having visited the sites where the stories occurred and elaborating on the history behind the drama.

Holli was preceded in death by her brother Craig Mathews and her father David Mathews. Holli is survived by her mother Virginia (Lynn) Mathews of Houston, Texas, her sister Dana Mathews and brother-in-law James DeBruin of Dallas, Texas, and three first cousins. Holli is also survived by a loving multitude of friends, with whom she shared fun and laughter, tears and struggles. She entertained them with funny stories and funny songs that she made up on the spot.

A celebration of life will be held for Holli at a future date due to Covid 19 concerns. Her ashes will be spread at one of her favorite locations in Colorado. Holli’s family is very grateful to the wonderful, kind and supportive medical staff at University of Colorado Health Highland Ranch Hospital, especially Tom Purcell, MD who provided excellent medical care with incredible kindness and patience throughout her illness, and Rev. Dottie Mann and palliative care nurse practitioner Catherine Quintana, who both provided spiritual uplift and peace in Holli’s passing. The family is grateful for the loving care provided by numerous friends, particularly Jude Abel and Patricia Boltz, who were there for Holli to the end.

In lieu of flowers, please hug your pet, get a pet, or support your local animal shelter. Holli would want it that way.
