Leslie I'll try to find those songs for your music player. There are a bunch of songs available from The Cab....do you have any other of their songs you want ? Might be awhile before I can get to it, though. Have to work much of the day Sunday, then start another 70 hour week on Monday. In addition, I have a deadline coming up for the February edition of Tink's Music Corner. Also, have to "squeeze - in" Hunter's two basketball games this week. Wheeeeeeeew !!! Jeff I saw your '68 Warrior football picture and was reminded of my one biggest regret from high school.....not having played sports.I would do a lot of things different if I could go back, but that's just the way it is. The Righteous Brothers....finally someone here that has musical interests similar to mine ! You know the Bill Medley line in the song You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling where he sings "you never close your eyes, anymore when I kiss your lips" ? I do a fantasic imitation of him singing that line.......that is, when I'm in the shower !!! Not so good, otherwise !! I suppose I better get a little sleep. I have to get up at 5:30am.

Tom, Enjoying the music! Thanks! And I have to admit I was probably a girl in the minority in the early 70's who didn't like the Carpenters that much..I did admire their talent, however...I was too much into rock, except for Cat Stevens, whose name I now can't pronounce or remember, for that matter...I heard this week that he is coming out with new music...wonder which name he plans to use?

To all 8th grade classmates: I was going through some things that my Mom had saved for me over the years. I ran across several items from our 8th grade year in '65-'66. See if you remember any of these: 1. Christmas play (12-15-65) "The Littlest Angel" (complete program with list of characters) 2. "King & Queen Contest" (I have my "Vote For Tom" button) Joe Ed Koenig got King...only because Wayne and I would go around town each day and take the money out of our "voting jars" and buy pop & candy ! (10 cents equaled 10 votes, remember ?) 3. Spring musical 4-27-66 "Centennial Play" (the founding of Freelandville) (complete program) NOTE: If you recall, we did a second performance of this play in July, for the Centennial Celebration at the ballpark. ------------------------------------------- I also found all the old newspaper articles from the NK Jr. High basketball tournament and a complete program, listing each teams players and cheerleaders. I found newspaper clippings pertaining to NK Jr. High football and track teams. Remember, all NK schools combined for those sports. Shows Jeff Lynn and myself long jumping 15 ft. 11 in. Unbelieveable. I am barely able to "jump out of bed" nowdays! And of course, I found a love letter from Leslie. Leslie, in case I forgot to answer your letter back in 1965...... I like you "very, very, very, very, very, very much" Don't worry, I will not "start liking Cheryl" and I will "love you always, too"

Leslie,

Yes I do remember sledding down 6th St. like that, I tell my wife about it all the time. She's not a winter weather person at ALL. I don't think she's ever been sledding before. I always tell her how we used to sled for miles (I guess it was really blocks), but what the heck, it makes for a good story. We went to the Blue Man Group show in Vegas and really enjoyed it. Hope you are there next time we make the trip (whenever that is).
Hey, by the way, which member of The Cab is your grandson?

Henry,

I know your son Derek, I run the scoreboard at the Red Hill football games and do the announcing at the track meets. My son, Brett, helped with the football team for about three or four years. He didn't help this past season though. He and his wife moved to Olney.

Tom,

I wish you and some others had played at least football in school. I think our senior year we only had five seniors on the team. Could have used several more. It sounds like you should have run track also. But I sound like you now, who can think about "jumping" 15' 11", I can't even RUN 15' 11".

Have any of you ever saw the website located at www.alumniclass.com/northknox? It is not near the website you have put together here, but thought some may be interested in checking it out. I don't believe it is actually affiliated with the school, but seems to have some activity on it. I believe I saw 3 or 4 of your former classmates registered on it. They charge about a $10 lifetime fee for membership.

Jeff, I am confused on the pole vault. Was that you or Jim that pole vaulted? I tried so hard to learn to pole vault with a bamboo pole I got from Kixmiller's Store in Freelandville. I think the new carpet was wrapped around the poles. I tried and tried, but could not get the hang of it. I remember you, maybe Jim, though were pretty good at it.

Tom, I listened to Gretchen. She was good. You should have told me she was country. I thought she was some hard rocker from the 70's. I am looking forward to February's Corner. Gary Lewis is one of my favorites. I saw them at a small bar/nightclub in Pueblo, Co in 1975. It was a swinging place. The next weekend, it burnt to the ground and they never rebuilt it.

I have flown with a guy at US Airways for 25 years who used to fly and even manage the money for Hank Williams Jr. in the early 80's. He was with Hank when he fell off the mountain. When, Larry left to come to the airlines, Hank gave him a real Rolex. Not bad for a parting gift.

Dick I agree on Gary Lewis, he is very good in person. As Lu Miller says, songs you can sing along with. Cindy & I saw him at Sherman House Dinner Theatre in Sullivan and at Medsker Ampitheatre in E-ville. Kinda of erie.....his guitar player could have been my twin ! We saw Hank, Jr. at Roberts Stadium in 1982. You're US Air buddy was probably there !!!!! We had like about 10th row seats on the floor, so loud, you almost couldn't enjoy the show. Just so happened, I looked down a few seats in our row, and there set that Summers guy from E-port !!!! Luckily, by the early 80's, we had calmed down a bit and didn't get kicked out of the concert !!!! LOL

Luellen Byrer (Miller)

It's snowing outside right now... Hey, Jeff - Leslie: 9th Street hill was darn good for sledding too! Donna (DeMoss) - if you are reading this stuff - you remember spending hours on the "big slopes"? Our side yard was also like a "sledding park" on the terraced hills dad built. There were a couple of dangers, though. One was the trash burner at the end of the run, another was the big ditch right behind the burner. You had to maneuver the sled very carefully, making a sharp turn at just the right time! I know from experience - ouch! lol

Leslie, your grandson's band is GOOD! Which one is he? I listened to an acoustic version of "Bounce" on youtube that was pretty cool.

Tom, I confess to not listening to every song you had on your player list. Yeah, I am sorry. Did the Doors' "Riders on the Storm" happen to be one of them? If not, would you put it up sometime? I had not heard that song in years, and just recently heard it at my cousin's funeral. It was one of his favorites. The version they played sounded different somehow, like it was a longer, more mellow version. I don't know. This cousin's name was Ralph Bond. He was our age. Do any of you Hill Toppers happen to remember him in school? or Nita or Pam (or the older brothers)? They lived there awhile before moving to Elletsville. Anyway, if you do remember him, would you let me know? Thanks. Still can't believe he is gone.

By the way, Tom, if you were at Jeff's and my wedding, you heard "We've Only Just Begun" sang at the end of the ceremony instead of the traditional music. Thanks Rich for putting up the words! Ah, the memories. Lu, I'm OK with having that Carpenter's song at weddings, I just don't have any desire to listen to it otherwise. Sorry. I think it was Richard Carpenter that I didn't like. I remember reading where he was a "control freak", so much so that all the vocal harmonies on their records were "over-dubbed" in the studio by he and Karen. Would'nt even allow back-up vocalists on their records. "Riders On The Storm" is one of the only Doors recordings that I care for. BEST WAY TO ENJOY THIS SONG: Late at night,go out to my garage where I have my "man cave". Recline back in my Lay -Z- Boy recliner.....only light is from a small Drewery's Beer lighted sign on the wall. Lean back and close your eyes and relax.......now, start the music.....It's almost like your right their in the studio with the Doors.....kinda of an erie feeling.......Yeah, far-out, man.....groovey.... LOL

To All Interested,

My grandson is Alex Johnson and he plays the drums with Cab. He's the one with long hair. I'm not into that, but his hair is beautiful. I really respect Tom's knowledge regarding music and if he thinks all they need is a lucky break, then that excites me. When these guys started out playing in Cash's garage and our garage Alex said if they made it big some day he'd take care of me when I get old. For sure I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Rich,

I was the one that pole vaulted, Jim ran the distance races. I was all for those short distance events. My dad made my brother (Jack) and me a sawdust jumping pit in our back yard and my first pole was bamboo. I got it when my parents got a new carpet and that's what they carried the carpet into the house on. I used it all the way through eighth grade. Got my first fiberglass pole from my pole vaulting "idol" Donnie Russell (he married Dennis Pinnick's older sister). He finished second in the state track meet one year. During the regional track meet, he broke his pole, cut the top of it off and brought it to my house one night. Man, I thought that was the greatest thing ever (I still have it to this day). My brother high jumped and we used to have track meets in our back yard.

Luellen,

I remember the Ninth Street hill, never did sled on it but used to go that way to Mike DeCoursey's house. I also remember there being a narrow bridge across the creek next to your house so a person could go from the street to the Tastee Treat. We used to ride our bikes down the hill and across the bridge. If I remember right, someone missed the bridge and had a major crash (possibly Mike, but not sure).

Michael DeCoursey

Jeff,

That was me who had the big crash in June of 66. Randy Hobson was with me and helped me home. Called my mom at the phone company and spent several days in the hospital with a bruised spleen. to this day I still don't know how I crashed.

Rich and Leslie,

I guess I was all messed up about the cousin deal. I thought it was something to do with my dad's side of the family, but I asked him last night when I was talking to him. He wasn't real positive himself. He said actually it was something to do with Leslie's grandfather Jones and my grandmother Reynolds having some connection. I guess we weren't even cousins like I thought. I never have been real good on that family tree kind of stuff.

Didn't mean to lie, just screwed up. That would have been the first lie that I have told since I told Mrs. Delzell in English class that I really did read "The Old Man and the Sea". I think that I gave a book report on that book every year in high school (one of the shortest books in the library).

Tink I remember the concert I thought it was 1983 though. Why do I think it was 1983? Because I still have a t-shirt from his concert in 1983 that says HONKY TONKIN 83 on the back. Also have 88 concert t-shirt from WILDSTREAK TOUR. Prize posession from 77 or 78 a OL WAYLON t-shirt with LUCKENBACH on the back. I think I got that at a concert at Mesker the summer Waylon got busted. I am pretty sure you were at that concert. later Summy Summingston, You are correct, sir !!!! Hank, Jr. at Roberts Stadium was 1983. I still have the ticket stub on display in my "man cave". I have all ticket stubs dating back to Strawberry Alarm Clock at THE WORLD in 1967. The Waylon concert at Medsker Ampitheatre (1978 ?) was a wild one if I recall correctly !!! MOON on the pedal steel guitar. Damn, ole Waylon was good in his prime !!!! Isn't that when you let Joe "Struckmeier" Robbins drive your truck and he ran into street sign trying to leave the concert ? I think first wife, Janet was with me at that concert. She drove home. Woke me up at about 3:00am on a gravel road in the middle of absolute nowhere and wanted to know where we were at...and how do we get home ? I had no idea where we were at. Could have been in Kentucky, Illinois or Indiana for all I knew !! That woman was ignorant.....

Mike, Thanks for signing on. Good to hear from you. Maybe we can go flying someday. Do you still fly?

Jeff, Thanks for the clarification on your pole vaulting days. I saw Don Russell pole vault something like 13' 3" at a track meet at Linton when I wan in Jr. High. Mr. Roach took us to see the meet I believe. I was impressed with his vaulting.

It was a tough day at the office. I instruct in the Airbus and am checking out a new Captain on the airplane. Great pilot, but always stressful when it is their first time on a new airplane. (Ah, you say you didn't know your flight could have a pilot that had never landed that plane before?) The FAA shows up this morning in Pittsburgh to ride the 5 hour flight with us to Las Vegas. We push back, the plane breaks, we get it fixed, have to deice, and then on our way to Vegas. Leslie, I was going to give you a call, but after this stressful day, I may just go to bed early.

Tom , I am waiting to see how you liked the music.

Strawberry Alarm Clock, great concert!! Leslie Would have stopped by, but thought you were in Texas. The Strawberry Alarm Clock at THE WORLD. Dec. 23rd, 1967.....I still have the ticket. Grab, I still think we went to The World with John that night. I know, you thought my Mom dropped us off there. Note Of Interest: Pat and I not only saw the Strawberry Alarm Clock that night in '67, but we got to see their 17 year old guitarist....Ed King. About five years later, Ed King became lead guitarist for a little band by the name of Lynrd Skynrd. In 1973, Ed blessed the world with probably the most recognizable guitar riff in the history of music......the intro to Sweet Home Alabama !!!!

Dick, Sorry, not impressed with Carpenters. Good harmony, but blah, middle of the road, wedding music. I hate to admit it, but I seem to recall having a Carpenter's 8-track tape at one time. Yikes !!!! Concerning Mike DeCoursey.....maybe some of you don't know, but Mike is a minister. He performed the funeral service when my Dad passed away in Nov. 2006. What an absolutey wonderful job he did All my out-of-town family commented on how good he made them feel. I met with Mike at the church the day after Dad died and planned the service and we talked for a long time. I can't thank Mike enough for helping me through an extremely sad time in my life. Interestingly enough, Mike's Dad and my Grandpa Josh were best friends. Josh was best man when Mike's parents were married.

Tink It was 77 in August the last week Elvis died the 16th WAYLON busted on the 24th. I remember hoping they did not cancel the concert. I remember the smoke was thick that night.lol Yes Joe hit a sign with my truck. The next day Dad was bitchin at me thinking I did it. Yes, Summytime.......cough, cough, cough !!!! Was going through some old memorabilia yesterday and stumbled on a love letter from Eagle Beak !!!! OMG !!!!!!!!!!!!! Honestly, I cannot remember anything going on between her and I (???) Now, I did rendevous at "the cemetery" with her sister, S---- B--. If there was anything with Debbie, I must have been so traumatized by the affair, that I have mentally blocked it out !!!! LOL If I was going to block anything out, you would think it would have been Leidra & Sue !!! LOL !!!!!!

Mike, I don't remember you crashing in my back yard. Must have been some crash! Was it on the bridge my dad built? (He built another downstream, a covered bridge. Both are still there, a young family has bought the place. Dad is gone, Mom is at Freelandville Community Home.)

Hey, peeps, Mike is the pastor at Bethel Church just outside Freelandville. Go hear him preach God's word sometime! Maybe we could all go together!

Henry, I looked at the alumni website (didn't sign on). I'm thinking it might have been started by the ones who started the alumni gathering a couple of years ago (it coincides with the football homecoming). Anybody know for sure??

Jeff (Miller!) and I went to Peabody's winter party in Evansville Saturday night. There was a band called The Pits. They were really good - played some good old songs, including Sweet Home Alabama. Tom, have you heard them? Be nice for a reunion maybe. Or maybe too expensive...

Last but not least - Welcome to the site Carlene! So glad to hear from you.

Guess we might wake up tomorrow to some nasty winter weather here in Knox County Indiana (or not). Be safe!

Jean Ann Miller (Schroeder)

I would like to wish Happy Birthday to Brenda & Anna!!! I hope you both have a great day!!! You guys were discussing sledding in Bicknell --- My Dad & Uncle Bob fixed up car hoods (upside down) and fixed a seat in them and pulled 2 or 3 behind a tractor. If you were in the back sled, they would be whipped around for a very exciting ride!!!! It is a wonder somebody wasn't hurt or had frost bite!! It is amazing what farm kids can find for entertainment:) Pat didn't you & John ride with Jeff & Randy? Maybe we should get the car hoods out for the snow that is on the way?

Rich,

That might have been the meet when Donnie broke his pole. I know it was at a meet in Linton. What happened was Donnie broke his pole during the meet and a kid from Spencer, IN let him borrow his pole for the rest of the meet. Donnie went on to qualify for the State Meet and the kid from Spencer didn't. Donnie worked for Bob and Betty Deweese (Brenda Holmes' in-laws) at the drug store in Bicknell. Being the kind of people that they are, Bob and Betty made arrangements with the kid from Spencer to buy his pole for Donnie to use at the State Meet and he finished second. The pole that he broke was the one that he gave me and I still have in my garage.

I remember when I went to West Side Grade School, Donnie used to practice his vaulting at noon hour. I would run down the street to my Grandmother's house for a quick sandwich and hurry back to watch him. Every once in a while he would lower the bar and let me jump. As far as I was concerned, he was THE BEST.
