Tom, Did you win anything at the bike rodeo down at the ball park when we were in Scouts?

Tom Held

No prizes for Tommy that I can recall. By the way, my bike in the picture I posted was a Western Flyer. This was taken Fall of '58.
My next "ride" was "sweet".....it was a Schwinn Roadmaster. Green & silver. Kinda looked like Pee Wee Herman's bike. Lights/ generator, mirrors, luggage rack and big ole white-wall tires.
It was Christmas present in '62.

Jean, I remember Bill's fancy bike that he would ride to bible school at Bethel. I was envious. He had all kinds of mirrors, lights, reflectors, generators, speedometer, etc. It was cool.

Dick, Bill said he remembered buying the bike from his cousin. Gerald Polk from Freelandville, painted the bike for him. Bill added some additional options. He thought maybe it would be a chick magnet!!! I don't think it was, but what do I know!

I've been looking at that new picture posted and the only person that looks like anyone I would recognize is John Thompson.

When in fact it's probably not even him. I just really can't see any faces. Guess I'm loosing my eyesight or just getting older or both.

01/31/09 01:26 PM #705

Tom Held

Leslie....you are getting old and you are losing your eyesight, but that is not why you cannot recognize anyone in the picture.
I intentionally picked a photo that was difficult to recognize anyone. Previuos pics have been too easy.

All went on to graduate NKHS. Four of them are 1970 grads.

Tom, Ok I do recognize Pat Grabbe and Dick Finke. I keep thinking one of those looks like John Thompson. I'm sure if you have the pictures you must be in there but I don't know

I think Tom would be the third from my left

OK.....you guys have 3 out of 4. Now, who is #4 ?

I think that swimmimg instructor must have been ex-military. He was a tyrant !! Later on, he reminded me of Sgt. Vince Carter.

Ruth Hagemeier (Wesner)

Tom...Maybe the 4th one in picture is Wayne?, also is Bob Harkless & Robert Parkes in the picture?

I want to thank everyone who called, sent cards, food, was at the viewing and sent messages to me on the website for my mom's passing. Your thoughtfulness is very much appreciated to my family. My parents have made Happy St. their home for the past 48 yrs. Now Tom, you and Cindy will have to take over where they left off...although you will have competion with Brenda & Kent:)!!

02/01/09 03:50 AM #710

Tom Held

As long as Kent continues to plow the snow in my driveway, he and Brenda can be King & Queen of Happy Street.

Wayne is correct. Sam, Jon, Dick, Pat, Bob, Doug Walker, me and Wayne.

Ruth Hagemeier (Wesner)

Tom..never would have guessed Jon & Sam, did thought Doug might be one. The blonde one sure looks like Bob H.
Oh well!!

Forgot to mention to Jean, she is in Florida, be glad you went when you did, the weather here is horrible again. Snowing, Blowing & Drifting :(

Tinkster
Great job on the Playboys. I got to see them a couple of years ago at the boat in E-Ville. They did a great job. They did a Beatles medley that would knock your socks off. I still have my 66 Jaguar that I bought from JB. One of these days I am going to put it back together, after a paint job.

Tom, Just to let you know you probably won't be hearing from me this weekend. Looks like my sister has to have another surgery. They tried a new procedure with a mesh net instead of the screws and bolts but I guess it really didn't work. They also discovered she's diabetic and with being over 100 pounds overweight, it could be interesting. Just wanted to give you a heads up so you would't think anything happened to me. I think i'm gonna check out getting a job as a truck driver after this. Lol

Ruth Regarding the YMCA photo from 1960....I believe one group of us always went with Doug's mom...Ruby. I'm sure not everyone in the photo could fit in Ruby's car.....not sure who drove the other kids there. Dick, if you read this.......do you remember what was located across the street from the YMCA ? After swimming classes, we would go across the street and play on "it".

Richard Finke

Tom, Give me a hint on what was across the street. I cannot believe I cannot remember what you are referring to.

I have been braving the cold in IN the last few days and have been away from my computer. I have been trying to get my folks hooked up on DSL with Verizon. That has been the experince from "H---". Too long of story to relay, but a bad experience to say the least.

I highly recommend signing on to facebook and becoming a friend of Tom Held. His photo album of his "dirt bike" days is great. Tom, I had no idea you were that into biking. My nephew, Scott Kirchoff and his boys are really into that sport and travel south many weekends to race. Anyway, I really enjoyed seeing your pictures.

Jean, If you are online in Florida, I hope you are having a good time.

Tom, I have not had a chance to look at your music corner for this month, but I intend to read and listen to all the music on my 4 day trip I leave on today. Thanks for all the work you have done on the page. Gary Lewis is one of my favorites.

Dick, Yes, I was into the motorcycle competition thing pretty heavy. It's kind of like golf....you get addicted. Keep thinking you can do better, each time out. Dick Nomady got me into it. First race was the Black Coal National Enduro. Of 400 riders who started, 348 finished the 140 mile course....I finished 348th !!!! But as Nomady said, you finished. I kept after it, and eventually gained some respectability. I know of Scott Kirchoff. I believe he was just getting into it, as I was forced into retirement. I especially enjoyed the travel and camping out on Saturday night before the race on Sunday. I got to know several guys from around the midwest and still keep in touch with a couple. I really, really miss it...a lot. OK....what was across the street from the old YMCA ? Maybe you were not one the kids that went over there and played....that is why you don't remember. That block, kat-a-cornered" from the YMCA was the property of the American Legion. On the corner, they had an old jet fighter plane on display. Remember ?????

Ruth Hagemeier (Wesner)

Dick, I will probably hear about your experience from "H___" with the computer on Friday. I cannot get Verizon DSL in my area, I keep checking. Sadly I still do dial up. Went by your parent's house on Sunday, saw a red car (rental or family?), so I figured you had made it to Indiana. Nice pictures.

Tom, Nice job on Gary & the Playboys. Enjoy their music.

Luellen Byrer (Miller)

Rich you picked a really good time to come home. Hope you enjoyed the weather! Working with Verizon, did you get to talk to someone with an accent? That always sends my BP sky high. Nice pictures of rural Freelandville.

Don't know the temp. where Jean is right now, but her parents (my in-laws) are in St. Augustine and it is supposed to get down to 20 tonight. Needless to say, they are not having a very good time.

Tom - love Gary Lewis & the Playboys. Thanks for the memories.

Hey B.V., are you reading this? :D

02/04/09 11:33 PM #721

Richard Finke

Lu, I talked to ladies in Mexico City and the Phillipines, All kinds of people that got my BP up too.

Tom, I do not remember the plane, How ironic. Maybe the old age thing is setting in more than I think.

Ruth, The red car was a rental. I didn't know Toyota made a car that small. The coal trucks just about blew me off the road.

Jean Ann Miller (Schroeder)

I'm in Orlando right now. The temperature was around 32 this morning. It is to warm up to the mid 50's today & by the weekend mid 70's. They thought it might be a record low last night, but it wasn't. You might know, when we are here, the temps would be low. At least, the place we are staying has heat!!! Mickey might be wearing his long johns!! Dick, Nice pictures of Freelandville. The farm scene was nice, also.

Tom, thanks for the music...enjoyed it! Rich, also enjoyed the Indy sunset...I have to admit I usually enjoy winter but this one has been rough...I know it's been worse in Indiana and the rest of the Midwest. I am looking forward to spring with much more enthusiam than usual...
