Difficulty 6: Edd Byrnes? '77 Sunset Strip Difficulty 9: Shelly Winters, the olympic swimmer in Poseidon Adventure, that's all I remember her from. The Mr. Ed song - funny how we remember such things and can't remember where we laid the keys. lol Doesn't take much to entertain us. This interests me way more than talking about "the pork". Tom - Gary was a "silent partner" at J&G Sunoco. He still has his '40 Chevy. He has recently fully restored it himself (except for the paint job and a couple other little things), takes it to parades and enters it in car shows all over the place. It's fire engine red (probably has a Chevy color code), you can't miss it! They drive it everywhere, too (when they're not in the Toyota minivan they won at the girls holiday tourney a couple of years back). In about 35 minutes, Debbie Telligman will be celebrating a birthday. Happy, happy! Lu, Edd Byrnes is correct. Shelly Winters is not correct, although this actor's last name is Winters. I don' know for sure, but would assume she is Shelly's sister ? (HINT: I REMEMBER WATCHING HER ON SATURDAY MORNING TV) Difficulty 2 should be easy. Difficulty 10....well, that one will be tough !! Although, it is a character you will recognize. (HINT: HE VISITED HIS FRIEND AT 211 PINE STREET QUITE OFTEN, ALTHOUGH HE WAS NOT IN EVERY EPISODE OF THE SHOW.)

Thanks for the hint on Diff. #10. It's Whitey - Stanley Fafara - never woulda guessed it! He used to be cute!

You know, I googled Shelley Winters and her pictures just didn't look the same as the one you posted. But I thought it was close enough. Oh, well.

Tom, Does the picture have anything to do with the "Songbird"?

Tom, Acutally I do pretty much get out of bed and onto the computer. I can hardly wait to see what new thoughts and pictures you have put on our site. Here is a rather sad link from the picture of Stanley Fafara I found on the web: Stanley Fafara.
It talks about his death a few years ago.

The Songbird ? Huh...........could be, maybe............go ahead and say it....you know who she is. Can't believe nobody has guessed the easy one. Well, no one got all four correct, so I don't have to make good on the grand prize !!

Richard Finke

OK, I believe it is Penney from "Sky King"

02/21/09 11:05 PM #780

......and you would be correct. So...who is the last one ?

Leslie,
Guess we will have to keep our humor to ourselves, huh?

Tom,
I don't jump right out of bed on to the computer. For your information I was at work at 7:58 am.

Luellen,
Hope your Mother has a very Happy 90th Birthday today!
Mother and I sent her a card.

Dick & all - when I filled out reunion survey I checked dinner but no band mainly because of previous poor attendance/cost of band but my thinking was I'll bet Grab and Tink could come up with music!!!!

I am not sure if we ever answered who the gentleman was with the beard. I believe it was for the record, Chip, from My Three Sons.

CORRECT !!!!!!

Tom did an incredible amount of work putting together this month's "Tink's Music Corner". I would like to thank him for all his time and effort. Please take some time and enjoy his work.

Tom, just checked out the music corner, thanks for the background on Marty Stuart.....thought I would be the only Marty Stuart fan. Have seen his show on RFD, not had the pleasure of seeing him in person. Too bad your 'corner' has come to an end....good for RC to have dedicated employees like you.

A BIG THANK YOU to Kathy and everyone who has sent Mom birthday cards. For someone who said she didn't want a big celebration for her 90th birthday, she sure is enjoying every minute of visits, cards (100+!), and the family party.

Tom, your Tink's Corner feature of Marty Stuart and others is great. I like the real stuff, too, but Jeff is no fan of it. lol! Last year we stayed in a motel across from RFD-TV in Branson, but didn't go there. We did go to a live radio show that was really fun, with audience participation. Even Jeff enjoyed that. My niece Keri (Maddox) McKimmy had a bluegrass group play before and during her wedding last summer. Toe tappin' stuff! They are called Fields of Home, with a CD called Bittersweet that I love to listen to (some of the songs were played at the wedding).

Speaking of music, I want to invite everyone to the Red Skelton Center at V.U. on Saturday, April 11, the day before Easter. There will be a community contata/orchestra/drama performing at 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. You will be blessed! I am thrilled to be singing (NO solo's!) along with my sister Sara and a couple of friends from church and about 100 others from the Vincennes area. Hard work, tho'. We have to memorize everything and this old brain is on overload!

Rich, I was just looking at the slideshow. On the one your caption says "What's a typewriter?" Yeah, what's a typewriter? I worked at MSHA 70-76, using an IBM Selectric. When I started at GSH in 86, was thrilled to have the same kind except that it had an Erase key. woohoo! There's still some things we use a typewriter for. One day 3-4 yrs. ago my grandson Trenton came to the office. He wanted to know about the typewriter so I showed him how to use it. He was thrilled and impressed that the letters immediately typed onto the paper! lol And he loved the Erase key too :D

Took off work on Tuesday to travel to Linton to the dentist for toothache.....still feeling the pain, so I came home early today. Because of my log-in time, I didn't want anyone to think I was on the computer instead of working. Ruth, I thought I was probably the only one at this site that had even heard of Marty Stuart ! Now I know there are at least two of us. Anybody else ?? Watch RFD-TV Saturday night at 8:00pm est and you will be a fan if you were not before. Lu, What is Jeff's problem that he doesn't like this type of music ? I would never have thought it. If you're able, you might want to watch the show on RFD-TV on Saturday night. They always play a gospel tune near the end of the show. I am a big fan of gospel music, having taken an interest in it over the years because of the many bluegrass artists that include it in their shows. What did you think of Branson ? Sorry, but it is a little to crowded, crammed together to suit me. I was disappointed.

Luellen Byrer (Miller)

Jeff's an old "rocker". Uh, our cable doesn't include those upper channels, but I'll try to watch sometime if opportunity comes along. We went to Branson in the month of April for a conference, so it was pretty dead as far as tourists (good) and entertainers (bad). Didn't have much time for sightseeing anyway. Would like to go back, maybe on a tour bus. Yes, that's right a tour bus. Let them do all the planning and just go along for the ride and the fun. My sister Sara and I went on a AAA tour to Savannah, Charleston (and parts in between) and to the Biltmore mansion in NC. Had a ball!

Is it Happy Street or Henry Street ? You would not believe how many times I have been asked that question over the past 32 years that I have lived here !! Here is the correct answer. Remember, I said correct, as some less knowledgable Freelandville historians may mislead you. When Widner Township was surveyed from 1869 to 1871 by John Ritterskamp, the legal name given to this street was Henry street. John Ritterskamp used his family's names for several of the streets in town. I grew up on Julius Street....John's son. It eventually became known to the residents of Freelandville as Happy Street because of the friendly people who lived there. There is nobody living today who knows what year it receieved it's nickname. When I had the Freelandville Dutchmen website several years ago, I interviewed as many older residents as I could, and that is one question no one could answer. I do have a poem entitled "Happy Street" that was written by Henry "Squire" Schroeder in the 1930's for the open house for new Happy Street resident Ernest Pielemeier. "Squire" lived in the house that Ruth grew up in here on Happy Street. I think he was some relation to Fritz (???) Ruth...can you answer that ? When I bought my house here in 1977, it was still legally Henry Street. A few years later, the Freelandville Improvement Club decided to see about putting up street signs in our town. Unbelieveably, we had never had them before. At that time, the residents of Henry Street decided to petition to have the name legally changed to Happy Street. Everyone signed the petition except for one resident, who tried her best to stop it. We got the name legally changed. Happy Street only runs for one block, the length of our street...it ends at St. Hwy. 159. When it crosses the highway, it becomes Henry Street again. History will note, that it is one of the four original paved streets in town. It was also about that time that Channel 10 News somehow heard about the name change and came to our street and filmed a human interest type story for their 6:00/10:00 news show. If I recall, they interviewed Barbara McClure and a few others. Don't look for any Happy Street signs, as everytime they were put up, someone would steal them. We finally gave up. So, there are no street signs. Although, if you venture around town and look on the walls of several resident's garages, you most assuredly will find one of the much sought-after Happy Street signs. There you have it....I hope this is the last time I have to tell this story. Google Earth needs to get their act together. In the Google photo, my house is pretty much hidden by all the trees on my property. If you look just to the left of the "H" in Henry street, you can barely see my front sidewalk leading up to my house. In the back of the house, my patio is quite visible....you can even see the blue patio table umbrella ! Keep going back on my property into all the trees...make a left....follow the trees down through "Happy Holler" and you will find yourself at Grump's Garage. There is a well-worn path for you to follow !

Thanks Tom for the History lesson. I have always wondered about the story of Happy Street. I have labeled the picture as you described it. I would love to hear anymore stories like this that you may have.

Since this was my last Tink's Music Corner, I really tried to make it about something that truelly interests me. Especially take the time to view the videos taken at Bill Monroe's Beanblossom Bluegrass Festival. "Beanblossom" is about as much fun as you can legally have !! Beanblossom, In. is located just a few miles north of Nashville, In. Eight days of live bluegrass & gospel music in June. Do yourself a big favor....go on Saturday night. If you're not into camping, there are plenty of motels/ hotels/ bed n' breakfasts in the area. You will never regret it.

Here's something I never even noticed before. Where it shows "Slideshow" I clicked on it and there were all these pictures. What really amazed me was a picture that shows Rhonda Burcham, Bonabeth Duzan, Tom Held and I think Beth Heim is the girl you can kinda see. But in that picture, there's Meid Mackey and Bill Menke who are both deceased. I'm wondering what class that was. By the way does anyone know what caused Bill Menke's death?

02/26/09 07:37 PM #797

Richard Finke

I noticed the same thing Leslie. Two of the people in that photo are deceased. I believe Bill had heart problems. I am fairly sure he knew he had a bad heart. Meid died from an aneurysm. He got sick just after leaving some kind of marshal arts practice.

I think that was Mrs. Dalzell's english class (???) Now, being a typical sleezy male, what I want to know about that photo is.....whose "hot legs" are those in the bottom left corner ??? Any guesses ??? I think I might know, but would like to hear some opinions from some other sleezy males. Summy ? Roark ? Moon ? Bicknell kids: Didn't Bill Menke's dad die at an early age from heart problems, also ? Or am I thinking of someone else ?

02/26/09 08:01 PM #799

Leslie Jones (Palcovic)

Tom, I remember Mr. Menke passing away at an early age but can't remember why. But an hereditary thing makes sense. As for the picture I'm guessing the class is sitting in ABC order so I'll go with Jackie Foschar, Patty Grabbe, Susan Green or Nancy Hagemeier.
