Norman When you talk about big time, professional NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) drag racing.....then you are talkin' my language ! I went to my first NHRA US Nationals in 1969 and with the exception of just a handful of years, I have been there every year since. Also used to go to NHRA Springnationals in Columbus, Ohio throughout the mid 1970's. In 1974, we made a 2-day weekend trip to the Gatornationals in Gainsville, FLA. Among the crew that went to the races with us on most of these excursions was Luellen Miller's husband, Jeff. We saw Shirley "Cha Cha" Muldowney win her first Top Fuel event at Columbus in 1975. I have a 1978 US Nationals T-shirt autographed by Shirley and "Big Daddy" Don Garlits. There isn't enough space here to even begin to tell you of our adventures at the drag races. Lu has probably heard most of these stories over and over again, at least the ones Jeff could tell her about ! (Just kidding, Lu) Jeff will probably deny any involvement with these adventures, but I have witnesses at this site who can implicate him !! Grab ? Summy ? LOL I think "Moon" Harting even went with us to Indy in '71. Will try to post some of my NHRA drag race pics in a slideshow at my profile page when I get time. It is true, that Shirley and "Big" did not like each other for the first few years of her career. It took several years before he and the other male racers accepted her. If you've never been to Indy on Labor Day weekend, you are truely missing out !!! I believe I remember a pic of Luellen posing with NHRA Pro Stock legends Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins and Ronnie "Mr. 4-Speed" Sox.....maybe from early 70's (?) Lu...do you still have that photo ?

Norman You can watch a lot of auto racing events on TV and pretty much get the feel of it, although it's not like actually being there in person. NASCAR, the Indy 500, etc... But NHRA Top Fuel dragsters and Funny Cars on TV are absolutely nothing like being there in person. The sound, feel and smell of a nitromethane burning "fuel car" accelerating to 300 plus MPH in approx. 4 seconds or less is breath taking. The sound is unreal. Words cannot describe it......you just gotta be there. Luellen's husband will back me up on this. A big attraction at NHRA national events, is the fact that the pit area is totally open to the fans, unlike Indy Car and NASCAR. You can literally rub shoulders with the likes of John Force and the biggest stars of the sport. It might be my next vacation in June before I can create a slideshow from my many, many photos, but I will get it done. Promise !

I have posted the information on the passing of our classmate Steve McKinnon, on the "In Memory" page. Steve passed away in 2006. The information was provided to me by Norman Smith, who is Steve's cousin. Thanks Norman, for providing us with this information.

Danke Von Finke, that sounds much easier and faster than the way I did it at the old Freelandville Dutchmen website. I had a pen pal in Germany who did all my translations for me. Her name was Doreen Telligman. FYI, Telligman is a relatively common name in Germany. On the other hand, all Telligmans in the U.S. came from Freelandville and their German ancestor who first came here from the motherland in the mid 1800's. Did any of your grandparents speak German ? My grandparents, Carl Held (b.1898-d.1978) and grandmother Aleda Strate Held (b.1899-d.1967), used many German phrases in everyday conversation. Church services out at the church were in German until 1922, hence their knowledge of the language. Grandpa always said that they spoke a dialect known as low German. Ich bin ien Berliner !!!!!

Ruth Hagemeier (Wesner)

My sympathy to Steve, Deb & Family on the loss of Milt.

Congrats to Danny & Brenda on their new grandson.

I remember my grandparents speaking German, but not too often. My dad will say a few words every now & then.

Happy Birthday to all April babies.

We had a nice visit with Brittany & Luke in Washington DC. Did the tourist thing but glad to be back in Indiana to a slower pace of life in the country.

I just now got home and heard this news of Milt's passing. I almost feel like I did when my own dad passed away in 2006. For those of you who don't know, my family lived on the same block as the Telligman family. Steve, Mike and Mark were, still are, and will always be my best friends. As kids, we played together literally from the time we were old enough to walk. When we played at our house, my parents watched out for us.....and at Telligman's house, Milton & Joyce kept an eye on us. Milt was the model of what every father should be. So many memories of Milt.......could not possibly recount them all. He built a race track in his backyard for us kids to race our go-karts on.......and a double-decker treehouse (upstairs & downstairs). One favorite memory is one summer night, us kids camping out in that treehouse and a thunderstorm suddenly came up. About 2:00am, Milt was down on the ground (in the pouring rain) hollering at us kids to wake up, because of the danger of the storm. He made sure me & my brother got home OK that night. In those younger days, when I was at Telligman's house, he was like a second father to me. He will be missed.

Click on the link below to look at over 700 pictures from the Vincennes area. Some are very old. I think you will enjoy looking at many of them. The pictures are from the Facebook Group, "Vincennes Remember When".

Dick, Being a bit of a history buff, I really enjoyed the old Vincennes photos. Even more, I came across a photo of a structure from my very early childhood years that brought back a lot of memories. It is photo #18 (of 400)....the home of Catherine La Plante. In the mid 1950's, my Aunt Judy Niewald (my Mom's sister) was going to school at VU. (She was 1956 VU Homecoming Queen) She and her roommate lived in the attic apartment of this home. By that time, I am assuming this home had been converted to an apartment building. I do not remember it looking as elegant, as it does in this photo. I remember going with my mom and grandmother to visit Judy on our trips to Vincennes. I can remember my aunt having to move to make way for a new gas station that was going to be built on this corner (6th & Broadway). They were going to raze the home/ apartment building. That gas station was Merle Moore's Sunoco...Lonnie's late father. Even though I was only 3 or 4 years old at the time, isn't it amazing how much information your mind can absorb and retain).

On a different subject, I just now got a e-mail from my sister-in-law, Susan. She and her husband were in Chicago this weekend visting her son Brandon, who lives there. They also went to the Cardinal-Cubs game Saturday afternoon. On Saturday night, they went out to eat at Harry Carey's Restaurant. While they were standing in the hallway waiting to be seated, Lou Pinella walked in. Lou apparently has to also wait to be seated, so he stood and talked with Dallas and Brandon for a few minutes....patting Dallas on the back as he walked away. Needless to say, they were excited ! When they were finally seated, they looked over at the table next to them and there sat new Bears QB Jay Cutler !! Brandon got his photo taken with Jay. I have posted the photo on the homepage. Wow...what a Saturday night !

Rich, Regarding the picture on the front page. This was taken in 1976 at my sisters 10 year class reunion ( I was her date again) lol. I'm not surprised that no one tried to guess because in fact I remember very few people at her reunion knew who it was. If memory serves me correctly he played drums in the marching band. I really thought the Freelandville people were more intuned to "theres"

Steve and Debbie
Been out of the loop for a while and didn't hear of Milt's passing until a couple of days ago. When Ann and I got married and lived on happy street in my grandmother's house, Ann still worked at Good Sam. Being from Vincennes, she was not aware of the small town atmosphere at all, especially the gas stations. She only bought gas elsewhere when she had to. She would buy from Milt because, I quote,, I really like that Milt, he's always so nice to me, well, he was always nice to me too. He would always let us wash our cars in the wash bay, no questions asked. Fed us peanuts till we were sick of them during the holidays. I can not ever remember getting chewed out for being one of the guys standing in front of the building till who knows how late at night, I'm sure he got complaints about us all the time, he never said a word. I used to hang out in that neighborhood ocassionally myself, driving the Crosley around !!!THE TRACK!!! that Tink spoke of earlier. All around great guy. Tink's right. He will be missed.

Tom Held

Oh yeah, Grab......remember riding go-karts around the race track, but had forgotten about the Crosley ! Remember the merry-go-round he built in the middle of the race track for us kids ? You are so right about what he put up with at the gas station. Looking back, if I had been in his position, I think I would have asked the guys to move "the party" up to the middle of town. Actually, when all the guys gather down at Grumpy's Garage these days and repeat our stories of our coming of age in Freelandville, the majority of those stories seem to be based around Milt's Sinclair. Milt's business motto: FRIENDLY SERVICE AT FRIENDLY PRICES.....how true.

Those are some good muddy pictures Tom. It must take awhile to clean up those bikes.

I was cleaning up my yard last week and found a fairly big morrell mushroom. I have never found one in NC before, but had never really looked. I thought I was in Indiana for a second after I found it.
