Yeah, I was thinking Steve Tellingman and Elaine Finke too. Also wondering whose wedding they might have been in??

Saw John and Patty (Stanczak) Thompson last evening at the Mexican place in Bicknell. They're busy taking care of grandchildren these days. She said they don't have internet right now, but might get it hooked up so the kids have something to do. Maybe we'll hear from them...

Good guesses on the picture. The wedding was for Sharon Telligman, Steve's Aunt, when she married Don Reynolds in the 50's. Sharon lived where Liz Telligman lives today. Since we were neighbors, they asked Elaine to be the flower girl and Steve to be the ring man. I was not happy as a little kid that I was not asked to be in the wedding, but I got over it.

Rick...I understood the youngster with Larry Knight at the Class of 1969 Reunion was his grandchild. Don't hold me to this, but I thought someone had mentioned it was Larry's only grandchild. Thanks for the question.

Norman, Not being in the wedding was no big deal. It was one of those 4 year old things we go through. I went to the wedding as I recall.

Sounds like Freelandville about blew and washed away this morning. My dad reported 4.5 inches of rain, many trees down in Freelandville, hail, etc. I hope the crops will survive.

I lost two huge pecan trees on the hill on the backside of my property that leads down into Happy Holler. Unfortuneatly for my neighbor, they are laying on top of his house !!! I also lost a mature viburnum bush at the corner of my garage.

Sorry, but Larry Knight said it is an "act of God" and we are not at fault.

Still gonna be some serious chain sawin' the next couple weekends just to clean up my property. If you know of anyone who wants free firewood, send'em over to 14 Happy Street.

Speaking of chain saws, it is 8:30 pm and you can hear saws running all over town !

Dick, I would be glad to scan some old pics, just don't want to dominate the site. Would like to have others add some pics, too.

Tom, Sorry you lost some trees. Scan as many pictures as you want Tom. I like them all.

RE: Camping Photo...... At first glance it would appear that you and your Dad are really roughing it out in the wild. But, I know better. How do I know this you ask. The tree with the white paint. Your Dad always painted the trunks of the trees in his yard for as long as I can remember !!!!!

Richard Finke

That is interesting you mention the trees. My wife has never understood the white trees either. I think it started maybe to keep ants off the trees. I believe there were a few others around the village that also painted the bottoms of the maples white, although I cannot tell you who. I believe maybe Grote may have done it also. I think I may have another picture of the white trees I will post. ( Sorry, I just looked and no pictures with white trees.)

Welcome Rick Thompson to our site. Rick, I hope you are doing well.

Welcome Kay and Rick T.

About the painted trees. I believe they painted the bottom of the trees to keep off disease that was once infecting them. Not 100% sure if that was the case, but that's what I was told a long time ago when I asked about it.

Sorry Tom about all the clean up you have to do. Even here in Knoxville we had some hellacious storms. But, luckily not too much damage.

Later

Welcome all new classmates to the website.
HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY to all June babies, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to all yet to come in June.

We were lucky here on the Bicknell-Oaktown Rd. with the big rainfall...we "only" had 1.3" and I guess Freelandville area had more this AM. Jim talked to someone east of town, said he had 2.5" and once again we only had .9". Coming to F"ville Thurs. AM was like taking a maze with all the trees down and big limbs accross the roads, not to mention the water crossing the roads. And no power once I got to work. What a day!!

Keep the pics coming Dick, it's always fun to look back at the good ole days.

Weather Report - Dateline- Freelandville: I left Freelandville at about 3:00am this Saturday morning. I first encountered a large tree limb blocking the street at the corner of Baker Street & St. Hwy. 58.(in front of Grump's house). As I proceeded south out of town on St. Hwy. 159, I had to slow considerably to traverse deep water over the road in front of the late Bucky Richter's drive. Before arriving in Bicknell, I had to stop and pull off the highway because I could not see the road due to extremely heavy rain. Between Bicknell & Vincennes, on St. Hwy. 67, I also had to stop two more times because of vision problems. ----------------------------------------------------- Clean up at the Held family property can be described as slow, at best. Initial reports, indicate that serious clean up efforts will have to wait until "my next vacation in August" !!!

Tom, I can only imagine all the work ahead of you. Are you responsible for the neighbors damage? I'm in NC and we welcome rain when we get it, although lately there have been flash floods close by.Good Luck!

Larry Knight (NKHS '69), my State Farm Insurance agent, says that my trees falling on my neighbor's house are considered an act of God. Therefore, responsibility for damage to his home and clean up falls on his insurance company. He has insurance with local insurer (Widner Mutual), but apparently, not very good coverage. They are refusing to pay. I told him "you get what you pay for".....State Farm says I'm not responsible. Sorry. He says he has no money and that I am "morally responsible" to help him clean up the storm damage. No money, but rides a Harley and is planning a road trip with his grandson ! I cannot even clean up my own storm damage due to two L-5 disc surgeries and no time to do so (70+ hour work week). He says he will see me in small claims court. I'll be there, with State Farm at my side !! He is a grouchy old geezer who just doesn't get it. I'll let everyone know if we are going to be on The Peoples Court !!!

Welcome to this site, Kay, Leslie and Rick.

Dan - nice picture of your family. Those boys are cuties.

Tom, did the trees fall on your next door neighbor or behind you? Keep us posted.

Norm, thanks for sharing all the Viet Nam photos. That time and place made a big impact on a lot of people.

Rich, I just looked at the slideshow. Didn't realize you had added to it. It's great.

Sounds as though Freelandville really was hit last week! I talked to my folks a couple of times that day and they received about 3 inches...our houses in Freelandville lost big limbs and trees. Seems as though Freelandville has taken quite a few hits from Mother Nature lately.

Norman, I have enjoyed your pictures and memories of U-Tapao very much. By the time I got through pilot training and F-4 school, Viet Nam was over, but I flew F-4's with many people who used to talk about U-Tapao. I did get based at Kadena, Okinawa flying the F-4 in 1977-79. I spent some time in the Phillipines, Taiwan, & Korea. Your memories remind me of the days I spent in that area of the world. Thanks for posting your thoughts and pictures. ( By the way, thanks for your service to our country. )

Dan,

Now let's talk about that picture on the home page. It's remarkable that both of those babies are so blonde.(and so cute)!!!!!!!!

But what's really remarkable is that that's really you and Brenda. I'm looking at your Sr. picture and looking at you now. I'm looking at myself in the mirror and I'm sure it should be against the law for the both of you to look so good. I'm having my sister do some research into what kind of lawsuit I can file. The best I've come up with someone impersonating you and Brenda. Do you attribute that to early retirement or clean living?

06/24/09 11:55 AM #1095

Luellen Byrer (Miller)

Norm, I don't think you are offending anyone by your pictures and memories. Some who went to 'Nam have kept it all bottled up. I appreciate your loyal service to the good ol USA (and all who served/are serving). God bless!

Your comments are very kind but concerning my picture, it's amazing what photo touchups and a wig will do. Have a great week!!!

Rich,
I just couldn't pass up a comment about your latest picture. It is adorable! I realize this must have been an Easter Sunday picture, but I believe you are ready to start a career as an insurance salesman. Love the hat!
