Don Dyer posted an announcement at the bottom of the home page announcing the closing of Essex Wire. Don, I wish you the best and hope you can find another job. 30 years is a long time to work somewhere. My thoughts are with you.

Hey Rich, were you in the TARMAC TUG-OF-WAR being reported on the Charlotte news? I was looking for you but I didn't see you....come to think of it, it probably wouldn't be wise to risk a bunch of pilots getting back injuries...:)

Richard Finke

Kathy, I was not in the Tug of War. The pilots would probably have lost if we were.

For the Freelandville crowd, here is the obituary for Liz Dahl. Her mom graduated with my dad in 1940 from Freelandville. Liz use to visit Freelandville and go to the Bethel church when she came down from Indianapolis. Liz was related to the Singleton twins. I believe they were cousins. Liz's mom lives in Bicknell now. Liz was a character. When I was home last May visiting, I ran into Liz and her mom at the Mexican restaurant in Bicknell. She had not changed a bit after 40 some years. Liz had a heart attack a few weeks ago but did not recover. She will be missed.

Brenda & I had the pleasure of Rachel Varn's company in church Sunday. She admitted to viewing the site but hadn't yet signed in. Thought maybe a little prodding from us might encourage her to do so.

I received a nice email from Rachel Varns Parker. I had emailed Nathan to let Rachel know that Liz Dahl had passed away. Rachel and Liz were friends growing up. Rachel has been in OR for 22 years and has a son at the U of O. She told me that she enjoys reading the Forum. I hope Rachel will chime in sometime and let us know about whatever is on her mind.

Luellen Byrer (Miller)

Yes, Rachel, if you're reading this, jump on in! The more the merrier :)

Here's a question for you Freelandvillers. Does anyone remember hanging out with a Tim Lee in the '50's (Korean conflict era) when he stayed with his grandparents, Pat & Ruth Brandt?

10/15/09 10:55 PM #1336

Jean Ann Miller (Schroeder)

Lu, I don't remember a Tim Lee coming to Freelandville. Maybe someone who lived in town remembers him. What happened to our fall weather???? It is feeling almost like winter!! 45 degrees is too COLD for now!! This is October!!!! If this weather doesn't clear up, we will be harvesting our crops at Christmas time!! Bring out the Sun and some warmer temperatures!!! Thanks for letting me vent! This site has been pretty quiet lately............. Rachel, Hope you sign in to the website soon!! I'll be waiting!!!!!!

Now Lu, the Korean "conflict" was 1950-53. I don t recall too much from when I was age 1. LOL (NOTE: Actually though, I do have memories from age 2 1/2 when my brother was born !) I ran into Glenn Archer Friday in Sullivan. He said he would checkout this site. I hope so. What a pleasure it was hearing about the success he has had in his life. He has been minister at the church outside of Carlisle on Hwy. 58 for the last 15 years. He is retired from CRANE NAD. Also, Steve Telligman told me he didn't even know how to turn on a computer. Hmmmmmmmmm....something fishy here ! Debbie....be honest....did you log-in for "Ralph" ?

10/17/09 10:24 PM #1338

Luellen Byrer (Miller)

Ok, SORRY Tom! I didn't remember my history lesson on Korea and I didn't Google it before asking. The reason for the question is kinda long. I subscribe to an e-zine that sends a recipe every day. The guys who run Recipe Du Jour write little stories sometimes. Tim Lee wrote one a couple of weeks ago about his family driving past cornfields on their way to visit family in Freelandville. I perked up at that and wrote to him about our connections with F'ville. He wrote back saying he never knew anyone who had heard of F'ville and gave me a little more detail about his family. He said they spent time here while his dad was in Korea (I assumed during the conflict, but maybe that was not the case). I asked Mom if she had heard of his dad Bud Lee. Turns out he graduated from E'port with my mother. Small world.

By the way, I'm too lazy to read back thru these comments. Can someone tell me, please, did anyone ever identify the girl hanging upside down?

10/17/09 10:31 PM #1339

Richard Finke

Leslie Jones is the girl hanging upside down.

Tom, I like your new truck. Thanks for the information about Glenn Archer. Glenn if you check on, please email the site and we will put you on as a member.

Dick, LOL on the "new" RC routetruck. In reality, this is a circa 1940's RC truck. Dave Brown of Evansville sent me some old pics from when RC Bottling plant was located on 3rd street, between Main & Vigo. Dave's family owned RC Bottling in Vincennes for 70 + years. Actually, I did just get a new Freightliner tractor and am expecting trailer with latest RC graphics within a couple weeks. Should be quite different from current graphics. Will post a pic here so you locals will know me if you see me cruising the streets of Vincennes....or if you see someone in an RC truck sleeping behind a grocery store !!!

Lu, How was the weiner roast and hay ride? I hope your mom is getting along better after her fall.

Jean, How about some pictures of the corn harvest if you all ever get in the fields. That is one thing I miss where I live and that is the harvesting of the crops in the fall. There is something peaceful about the end of the growing season.

I was glad to find out Leslie was the girl in the picture...I had been guessing Ruth or Debbie...by the way, I have some family news...my nephew, Matthew, son of Gary, got engaged last week...planning a spring wedding I think...his fiance, Kelly, is originally from Tennessee, but family moved to Rock Hill SC....

Kathy - your family is growing! Best wishes to your nephew.

Rich - Mom is doing a little better, thanks to therapy. She still has to use a wheelchair, though. Thanks for asking.

We actually had two weenie roasts, Saturday for just "the girls" of the Byrer family, and Sunday for our church. It was very cool both evenings, but a good time was had by all! Blankets kept us all warm on the hay ride. We have a pretty good size pumpkin sitting by the back door. Anyone care to guess its weight? (I do have the answer. No prize, though, just the honor of being the best guesser.)

Thanks for the birthday wishes! I am enjoying the fall colors of Indiana. I missed that in Texas.

Rich, You certainly are a great source of information and fun on this site. I'm guessing the people are Jean Miller, Patrick Grabbe, myself,? and Tom Held. I think you may have missed your real calling by becoming a pilot.
