Susan Wolfe (Green) signed on today and metioned Theresia Barrett and Jean Gilmore. If anyone sees Theresia please tell her we would like to hear from her. Also, does anyone know what ever happened to Jean Gilmore? I am just curious.

Lu, With your birthday this year on 8/8/8 and your anniversary coming up on 11/11/11, I would be real careful when 12/12/12 arrives. My mother does always mention that she and Jeff have the same birthday.

Pat, Of course you have the birthday of our country's great loss on 11/22/63. Does any of the Freelandville crowd remember who came in and told our 6th grade class that the President had been shot?

Dick.........how could I forget.........It was my Grandpa Bill "Josh" Albrecht.

That is too easy. Who was our teacher ?

I was in Dallas a couple years ago on vacation. The grassy knoll that appears so lush & green on TV, is actually patchy grass, dirt and exposed tree roots. The wooden fence (second shooter ?) is rotted.
Must admit, it was an erie feeling being there. Street is marked with an X where JFK was shot.

Tom, What I was thinking was that Mr. Roberts came in and told us. I could be wrong. I was thinking our teacher was Mrs. Nolting. Fill me in because your mind is the best on remembering the past. Rich

Dick, Dick, Dick.......your mind is going. Next time your flying over Freelandville, let me know so I can take cover !!!

We were in sixth grade room, which was the first room to the right at the top of the north stairway. My Grandpa Josh, who was custodian (along with Lefty Hislip), knocked on the door and came in and whispered the news to Miss Cadwell, and she then told the class. Possibly, Mr. Roberts came in a few minutes later, but I'm pretty sure Josh was first with the news.
Pat. Kathy or Jean.......how do you remember this event ? Could I be wrong ?

Elsie "Nutty" Nolting was 7th grade teacher. Did we ever have her as a teacher ? I can't remember that we did.

Hey Guys!! I think you're both partially right...I remember Mrs. Cadwell was our teacher but I thought it was Mr. Roberts who told us..I remember Mrs. Cadwell was trembling and tearful...we all lost some innocence that day.

Tom: you know, it may be I missed your uncle telling Mrs. Cadwell....hmmm....now I'm not sure except for Mrs. Cadwell being the teacher. I remember the classroom as you described it. That was my first full year at Freelandville.

Tom, You need to give me grief now...I meant to say your grandpa...you jogged my memory because now I can see both your grandpa and Lefty in my mind...by the way, when did Mr. Orr (?) come along? Was it after Mr. Roberts passed away? And do you remember when all the school buses detoured to the funeral home before school for viewing Mr. Roberts? At least I think it was for him...I have to admit that rather freaked me out...I had never even been inside a funeral home before...

I recall Mr. Roberts, knowing he had cancer and was going to die, talking to us kids about life and what was ahead for us......instead of teaching whatever subject it was he taught. I realize now it was his way of dealing with his terminal illness.

Now back to my uncle,....er, uh,...my grandpa (Kathy !!!). I swear I can still see him walking over to Miss Cadwell's desk with the news. But, the years play funny tricks on our minds, so, it could have been Mr. Roberts.
Before I conceed, I want to hear from Pat and Jean .

Do you guys remember the pep session in the gym when Mr. Orr was chasing one of the "notorious bad boys" of our school...Kenny Cook, I believe it was. All the kids were seated in the bleachers in the gym and "Oreo" finally caught Kenny in the middle of the gym floor and somehow, and I'm not sure how, flipped Kenny up in air and onto his back, karate-style, and subdued him much to the delight and cheers of all the students.

I am waiting for Pat and Jean also, but I am not too sure of my memory at this point. I don't even remember Mrs. Cadwell in the room. Tom, I do remember Josh passing out milk in the lunch room during our afternoon breaks. I believe Mr. Roberts taught us some math. Did we not have other teachers during 6th grade besides Mrs. Cadwell???

OK Dick.....all your confusion is REALLY starting to worry me. I am for sure taking cover next time you fly over Freelandville !

Was poor old Mr. Offutt there in 6th grade ? When did Mr. Robertson come into the picture ? Robby we called him. He lived in brick house on corner across from playground.

Poor Mr. Offutt......you know we kids probably shortened his life by 10 years. He was constantly making trips over to Doc Odell's office for nerve pills.

Do you remember Steve Barrett's dad having to come and see Mrs. Hufnagel in the lunch room while we were eating? I am not sure what Steve had done, but Steve's dad was smiling and didn't seem too upset that he had to come to school.

07/09/08 08:56 PM #137

Tom Held

Oh my....Mrs. Hafnagel. The mention of her name still sends shivers down my spine !!! Remember when she threw her car keys across the room and hit Joe Robbins. I think he was sleeping (?)

Now let's really test your memory, old timer. And the question is: BUS NUMBERS / DRIVERS ???

LeRoy Trinkle
Arnie Stoelting
Junior Barrett

Kathy, Tom, Dick,
I remember Mrs. Cadwell talking to Grandpa Josh and Lefty. But as I said in an earlier entry, my memory may be failing me, I can remember the words to a thousand songs but can't remember driving to work today.

Jean Ann Miller (Schroeder)

Sorry guys & Kathy, I can't help you out. My memory does not go back that far!! I do remember the classroom at the top right of the stairs with Mrs. Cadwell as a 6th grade teacher. Leroy Trinkle bus #2. (The bus I rode to school.)

Pat,

Great Pictures! How old was John when he was killed in Vietnam? 19 or 20? A very, very sad time. In the picture he looks so young!

Any special upcoming dates for the Corvettes?

Jean
John was 20. He was killed on March 6th, 1969. Tom remembers the night when the Sherriff came to the front door and told us that he was missing in action, because mom had called me upstairs from the basement where we were practicing or playing cards. I remember going back down to the basement and telling the guys, hard to do. The Sherriff came back the next day with the telegram informing us that they had found his body. Ten days later his body arrived at Utt's Funeral Home. I remember going to he funeral home and asking them to open the sealed casket that he came home in, to verify if it was him or not. I was the only one who wanted that done. Two of my uncles went with me to identify John. They told me it was him, but I already knew because I saw Dick's face that night. If I have never told you Dick, I am sorry that you had to go through that with Gordon.
I could go on and on.
I lost track Jean, no Corvette reunions at this time

Pat, Thanks for sharing those thoughts with us. I do remember that night very well. Please don't feel sorry for me. I still get emotional to think of your loss. I am sure my mom losing her first husband in WWII (Ruth Hagemeier's Uncle), and John's death had a major effect on my pursuing a military career in the Air Force. We all certainly lost our innocence that year. I hope none of us ever forget the sacrafice that John made.

Pat, thanks for sharing the picture of John. I still miss him. He was a special person.

Pat, that is an awesome picture of John. I remember when I heard about his death and how sad and scared I felt.

On a lighter note, I also appreciated the picture of the Corvettes...

R.B......what a wonderful photo of John. They say time heals all wounds. Not in this case. To this day, I have never been comfortable talking about John's death. It still hurts too much. I have never failed to let March 6th pass without remembering the big brother I never had.

Once a month, on Saturday evening, I go out to Bethel Cemetery to visit with my relatives and friends. John, Dave and Doris are regulars on my route.

So many memories........just little, insignificant things that have stuck in my mind over the years. Things that don't mean anything to anyone, other than you and I.

** I thought it was so cool, when John cruised the town in his '60 Chev....wearing his motorcycle helmet !

** John picked me up in the "infamous" IH Travel-All to go out to band practice at Boberg's. He did his best to scare me, driving those country roads at 80mph. He did scare me, but I wasn't about to let him know it !

** Football games in our side yard....you know, the kind with the whole town there......and John's Chev pulled up in the yard with the radio blasting out tunes (WJPS 1330-AM, of course !).

** About 3:00 am on a Sunday morning......the Corvettes' bus (Sunshine at the controls) turns the corner at the intersection in Freelandville and pulls up infront of Milt's Station. The bus door swings open and John comes falling out the door, a hoopin' and a hollerin'. Obviously, a big night at Lamey's !

** We (me, you & Telligman ?) went with John to the grand opening of The World in Vincennes. We were "wallflowers", while John made time with the ladies ! He was always smooth with the girls. I envied him.

** Probably, my fav memory, because it is the last time I can remember seeing John.........our band was playing a dance after South Knox b-ball game in 1968. Boberg had b-ball game at NK that night. So, John waited for Boberg's game to get over. Boberg jumps in the car with John and they make a high-speed trip to SKHS just in time for us to start playing after the SK game ! If you recall, John had all his hair shaved off (not cool in '68), but he sang his heart out that night.
I don't know if Wayne knows of this site, but it would be nice to hear some of his memories of John, especially that high-speed NK to SK adventure.

** John's favoite song...."In The Midnight Hour" (Wilson Pickett)

Life wasn't fair to your Mom & Dad.

Meanwhile, back to bus numbers/drivers. Wasn't it nice to grow up in a small town where you could walk to your school? Grades 1-5 were spent at West Side and most days we walked, even going home for lunch. Grades 6-8 were spent at Central, being driven there each morning and walking home in the afternoon. I rode bus 11 to NKHS with Frank Herring as the best driver ever.
My recollection of "where were you when you heard about JFK?" is being in Miss Kovaleski's 6th grade classroom. All of a sudden the intercom came on and a radio announcer was describing what had happened.

Wow, bad timing. Tom, you must have been typing away at the same time. My cousin called and interrupted me... Those are great memories you shared.
