Dick, Happy belated Birthday. Thanks for reminding me I have a birthday coming up later this month. Ed's was July 2nd and for 3 weeks we are the same age!! I don't know how our parents had kids every year and still remain sane. Becky, Ed & I are just one year apart.

Pat, I remember going to John's funeral with Toby and think about him often. The picture of him reminds me of Jim's photo album from Vietnam. Never been to The Wall in DC, but saw the replica when it was in Vincennes and found John's name.

Tom, How can you live on the same street as my parents and sister and I never see you? I hear more about Freelandville on this web site than in my beauty shop! Wish I had the memory you have, but I am no help on the who told Mrs. Cadwell about JFK. I do remember going home and Patsie Odell was there with Mom watching the television. It is Mom's birthday also.

Kathy, Ever get to Freelandville, we all need to get together and maybe all of our memories together can match Tom's.

Tom,thanks once again for sharing...

You guys, the one consolation I have about John is that he really LIVED! No one could ever take that away from him...

Ruth, Hey! I was thinking about you today...I would love to get together...I think I'm coming up to Indiana for my nephew's wedding at the end of August with my brother, Gary, and his wife....maybe we can make a stop or two...I'll let you know when I have more of the details....Kathy

Ruth......don't know why we never run into one another. Used to see your Dad, but have not seen much of him lately. Our grandson, Hunter, talked to Fritz the other day, and said he seemed a bit confused. Is his health OK ?

Sat with Kent and Brenda at girl's softball games at Bruceville & Oaktown this week.

I also went to see "The Wall" when it was in Vincennes a few years ago and found John's name. It was a very surreal experience. Very dim lighting and everyone talking in a low tone or whispering.

----------------------------------------

Kathy......why are you always up so late at night ?

----------------------------------------

R.B......do you have anymore pictures of John that you could post ? All I ever had was his class photo and military photo.

---------------------------------------

To those of you who were never able to visit our now defunct Freelandville Dutchmen Website, we had several pages devoted to Freelandville servicemen. Although most are gone now, we had some decorated and brave young men who lived among us. Dick's dad is one of them. Dick, would you like to share your Dad's story with everyone. I didn't know anything about it until you sent me the info/ photos for the Dutchmen site.
Seems like all of our local WW II vets never cared to relive their war stories, at least not publicly. I was told by my Dad that Oscar "The Hog" Groteguth's experience in WWII was something he never talked about. He saw things he wanted to forget. He received several medals for bravery & valor, along with the Purple Heart.

John and I fought like cats and dogs, but we still were close brothers. I have more pictures that I will post later , I am off to St. Louis for the weekend.

Ruth
Good to hear from you, I didn't know that Jim was in Vietnam.

Kathy
You are right about that, he had a very good life while he was here. He loved to have fun.
Talk to all of you in a couple

Tom, I am a perpetual night owl...I get that from my dad...sometimes I don't even finish exercising until about 10:00...but I don't recommend that...and so that makes me not a morning person...I can't tell you how many times I hit my snooze button in the morning..on two different clocks....

Ruth Hagemeier (Wesner)

Sorry to say Tom, but dad is getting confused but he can sure tell stories of when he was a kid. He does better once he is reminded of who he might be talking to. Sometimes when he doesn't see a person for awhile he doesn't remember them.
I think any war veteran doesn't seem to want to talk about their tour of duty, just would like to forget what they saw. Having lived with Jim I sure know he hasn't talked much of the action, some days are still hard for him.

Kathy, Hope the August wedding brings you to Indiana.

Tom, Pat, whoever....Re. your trip to Gainsville, FL: I was talking with a couple from the Gainsville area last weekend and we were discussing Cedar Key. They said the restaurant is the Brown Pelican and is still there. Ring any bells?

Hello to anyone from Bicknell, Bruceville, Oaktown, Edwardsport, Emison, Westphalia, Sandborn, etc. If you are reading these messages, please join in! It's great to read all the Freelandville stuff (Friendlyville, as someone once called it) and after living there the first 25 years of marriage it's my adopted hometown, too (and our boys) - but! Your comments would be most welcome, too! (and hopefully as entertaining as Tom Held's! LOL! Sorry, Tom.)

I mentioned earlier attending West Side School. It was about 6-1/2 blocks from our house. We were called the West Side Blue Jackets. The school is gone now. It had been turned into apartments and a fire later destroyed the inside. The school had a gym in the basement. We had no cafeteria, though. That's why a lot of us walked home or went to grandma's house. Otherwise, you had to go to Central where they had a cafeteria. I don't recall what their nickname was, unless it was the Bulldogs like the high school. The other school was called South Side and their nickname was the Pirates. That school is gone, too...

Lu:

Regarding the "Great Cedar Key Restaurant On Stilts Debate".

The Brown Pelican Restaurant is located at 490 Dock Street. I'm sure your source in Gainsville is correct when they told you this restaurant overlooks the Gulf. However, I have not been able to find a photo of the Brown Pelican Restuarant, nor does the name ring a bell.

I have been able to find a photo of the Seabreeze On The Dock Restaurant, located at 310 Dock Street. You can access this photo at www.seabreezeonthedock.com. Although the name of this restaurant doesn't ring a bell either, the photo "kind of" rings a bell.......sort of.
Have Jeff (and Pat) look at the photo.....see if it looks familiar to him. I remember a large window in the dining room looking out at the Gulf. In the photo, there appears to be such a window. There also appears to be a large parking lot, which is how I remember it.

I second Lu's invitation to others to join in this discussion forum. So all you Bicknell Bulldogs, Bruceville Hilltoppers, Edwardsport Powers, Oaktown Oaks, Sandborn Blue Jays and Westphalia Failures.....please feel free to speak up.

I would be interested in hearing Don Lee Dyer's comments on Freelandville/ Edwardsport Little League battles in mid-1960's. As a "lights-out, fireballing" pitcher for the Fightin' Dutch, I would be sailing along, mowing down one "Cinder City" batter after another. Then, Don Dyer would come to bat and cause me to "lose it". You see, Don was a lefty. Totally screwed me up trying to pitch to a left-handed batter. Who knows, I might have made it to the major leagues had it not been for Don !!
I also recall that Edwardsport always had an excellent baseball team, due in large part, to great coaching.

I heard from my mother that Rachel Varn's mother, Ruth had a heart attack, but is home doing well. I hope she recovers well.

Pat, How was your weekend in St Louis? Did you see a game?

Tom, When you mentioned Mr. Robertson above, I also though of Mr. Ledbetter and Mrs. Russell. I cannot believe I cannot say with any certainty, who taught us what and when. Of course also there was Mr. Platt, Richie, and some art teachers in there also. 40 plus years is a long time to remember. I do remember though when I got the whole class in trouble when I brought a little Mickey Mouse slide projector to 2nd grade. We wanted the class room dark at recess and pulled the shades all down. Then the shades all went spinning up and out of control. Mrs. Green had all of us in the corner, and when she ran out of corners standing along the black board. I never brought the projector to school again.

It was great, anytime away from the phone is heaven to me. We went to St. Charles, old historic section downtown, I kinda tagged along with Ann shopping, basically just goofed off.

Tom
The Seabreeze on the Dock looks real familiar.

DICK !!! YOU TROUBLE MAKER !!!! WE ALL TOOK "THE WRAP" FOR YOUR WAYWARD WAYS IN 2nd GRADE !!

See, your memory is pretty good, too. Do you recall Eugene Rothgerber getting his knuckles smacked with a ruler by Miss Ruth in 1st grade ? Ouch ! Can't believe she did that.
Do you remember in second grade, you and Johnny Begeman wearing military style hats ? (The kind you wore in your AF Acadamey graduation photo.)
I was with my Mom and saw them for $2 in basement of Gimbel Bond store in Vincennes (what a memory !). She would not buy me one, saying they looked stupid.
"But Mom, Dickie and Johnny wear them !"

Today, I ran into a NK 1970 grad who lives in Edwardsport. He follows the posts at this forum, but is uneasy about joining in. Come on Mr. Dirt, talk to us.
I think we would all like to hear about you and Jeff Miller making a "beer run" into East St. Louis way back when.
He also reminded me, that Don Lee Dyer was not the only lefty on the E-port Little League squad in the mid-60's. He also swung the "lumber" from the left side.

Grab: I agree with you on the Seabreeze On The Dock. That window overlooking the Gulf seems like the one where we were sitting.

I'm on my laptop currently, and do not have program to blow up your Gators pic. I will do it on desktop ASAP.
My best guess:(left to right) You, Jeff, Rantoul and Bill Boy. I was the photog. Taken "in" the Gulf at Cedar Key. That's why we left wet footprints as we walked to our table at the "turtle steak" restaurant !

GRAB:
I receieved a nice note from Wayne Boberg this week concerning John. He trys to follow what is going on at this site. Undoubtly, he is a very busy man.

Wayne, if you read this, you're correct, our band WAS destined for greatness until we lost John.....well, maybe not greatness, how about destined to be the "house band" at the Lazy-D Roller Rink in Monroe City for eternity !! LOL
Do you guys still have your blue satin turtlenecks, white pants and Beatle boots ?

07/20/08 01:33 PM #173

Tom
No Beatle boots, no white pants, But somewhere I still have the blue satin turtleneck. I bet it still fits. Yeah right!!!

Brenda Sue Holmes (Deweese)

Hi Everyone, I've enjoyed reading all the comments and remembering things I hadn't thought of in years! West Side was a great little school... I wonder how many students were in the whole school? Hard to believe that Bicknell had 3 elementary schools.

Are we having another reunion in 2010?
