Kathy, Sorry about your dad. I hope he gets along ok. I think Spring has finally arrived. You need to move 30 miles farther south and you wouldn't get so much snow.

Rich, I have already decided that if I have another winter like this one, I will be looking to relocate or at least get another place for winter!! You're right, I don't need to move but a few miles south to avoid most of what I had to deal with. I would miss the spectacular views though....

Happy Birthday to You Sandy! It looks like the weather will be perfect. As they say, March came in like a lion this year and should go out like a lamb.

Easter blessings to one and all!

Belated birthday greetings Susan! Hope it was great!

Has anyone heard about Neil Long's (Corvettes) accident? It doesn't look good... please pray.

Leslie Jones (Palcovic)

Is there any information on Neil Long's accident? How sad for his family, and also what an affect this will have on the Corvettes.

Kathy Diane Dunn (Steele)

Luellen and Leslie,
My sister Joni has been in contact with someone of Neil Long's family and they declared him brain dead yesterday. Said they were taking necessary steps as he was a donor. The accident evidently happened at work, but that is all I know.

Terribly sad about Neil Long's passing. As long as the Corvettes were able to occassionally get back together....it seemed to take me "back to my youth". Now that is gone. All we have now are memories of what seems so long ago.
Thankfully, I have my wedding video from June 1985 of when the Corvettes played for my wedding reception at the Rod & Gun Club. It has them doing a couple classic songs such as "My Girl" and "Turnaround, Look At Me".

I was just informed that there is a Youtube video of Neil Long & Free Reign from Feb. 13 of this year. Just Google "Youtube - Free Reign Dance To The Music" and you should see a link to it.
Also, there is a Facebook page " Lamey's Grove" with a lot of rememberances of Neil.

On Pat Grabbe's profile page he has a picture of the Corvettes's reunion from 2004. Can someone tell me who the two gentlemen are 1st and 4th from the left in the picture. I know Neil, Pat, Rex and Sonny. I was just wondering who the other two are???

Dick
The guy on the far left is Bruce Stevenson from Vincennes, the fourth guy is Jim Russell.

GRAB The photo of the bus parked out behind Lamey's really stirs up some good memories. A couple of wet-behind the ears 15 year old high school kids riding to Lamey's on the Corvette's bus with Neil at the wheel.....watching the band practice on Sat. afternoon and supper at Lakeview with the band.......the dance on Sat. night..............then my Mom picking us up at Neil's house very early Sunday morning. Wouldn't trade those good times for anything.

I have forgotten lots of things from that time in our lives, but that day I can remember vividly, right up until Joey picked us up in Bruceville at 2 am, probably slept on the way back to Freelandville. Hangin with the Vettes, we were walking tall that day.

Grab How good is my memory ? Let me tell you the two songs that the Corvettes practiced that afternoon before the dance. "I Was Made To Love Her" - Stevie Wonder "You Know What I Mean" - The Turtles Can't remember what I had for supper last night, but I can sure recall that Saturday 40+ years ago !! LOL

Pat and Tom, Thanks for the information on the Corvettes. What happened to the other Russel that was in the group?

Leslie has some more pictures on the way. Please keep digging for some pictures you may have. I would love to post them.

Dick
Donny Russell is the other brother. Back in the 80's when everybody wanted the Corvette's to get back together Donnie played one time and did not want to do it anymore, since Rex and I had been playing together for a good while they needed a bass player and asked me to do it. I was happy to do it. All the songs that they were known for, I pretty much knew, Just like Tom, so it pretty much fell into place. The rest is pretty much history now. Tom you are correct on the tunes they learned that day, But I would have bet a weeks pay that you knew what they were. Dick, I'll see what I have in the picture department.

Don Russell was with the Corvettes in 1985 when they played for my wedding reception at the Rod & Gun Club. At the time, Rex was (from what Neil told me) having "issues" as far as playing reunions dances with the other guys and did not play that night. Tim Ridgeway (Tim & Tomcats) filled in on lead guitar and did a great job.

The line-up that night was Neil, Don, Jimmy, Bruce, Sonny & Tim. My one regret from that night was that Pat got his dates mixed up and was not there......for what turned out to be one hell of a "Dutchmen party" !!!   Everyone was having such a good time, that the band agreed to play an extra hour until 1:00am.  I recall Neil laughing so hard he could not sing, when I dropped to the floor (in my cream colored tux) and did "the worm" on the dance floor. I think that was the first of many regrets Cindy had about marrying a "Freelandville guy" !!  LOL

As I said, it makes me sick that Pat was not there, as I lived out my fantasy of playing with the Corvettes (Johnny B. Goode). Would have been awesome for us all of us to have played together.

I have video of that night and will convert it to DVD and post it as soon as possible.  Highlight of the video is our "first dance" to the Corvettes playing "Turn Around, Look At Me" (Vogues). It features Neil & the Russell brothers tremendous vocal harmonies......probably the best of all the songs they did over the many years. I'm sure Pat would agree. I'm especially glad to have this "moment" on video, now that Neil is gone.

It would be nice to see some more Corvette photos here and memories of those times, now that they have more or less "officially" come to an end.

Just one more note of interest about the Russell brothers.

For several years, they had a country music band called "The Five R's". They were a very good band.....again featuring Jim & Don's superb harmony. Other members were their brother Dennis Russell on drums, their Dad & their uncle(?), I believe.  I always enjoyed their rendition of Merle Haggard's song "Silver Wings". Their vocal harmonies on that song could really "rattle" the speakers !

Also, at one time, Don was married to our NK 70 classmate Cathy Smith.

Tom,  Thanks for all the information.  I did not know that Don was married to Cathy at one time.  Keep the information coming.

Wow this response page looked so much different that it almost scared me when it came up.  I'm still not computer literate.  Here's my question...Are we planning a reunion?  I really haven't heard much talk about it and I figure alot of people will need to make early reservations for the best flight and or hotel.  If Idon't find a job soon I'll be hitchhiking so it probably doesn't matter for me but I'm just curious.  Any info on that?
