I went to Scarborough in 1955, it was the old wooden school then.  I lived on Rothermel in Pinewood Village, Great days back then.

Happy Halloween to everyone.  Be safe and, if you drive tonight, drive carefully and watch out for the little goblins!

I am shortly off to my daughter's house to spend Halloween with my grandsons, a tradition that started 9 years ago when my first grandson was less than 1 month old.  While he didn't actually go trick or treating, we did dress him up as a pumpkin so he could "help" pass out candy!  So much fun!  Aren't grandkids just the best?

After that I am off to Galveston to spend Tuesday with my best friend, Sharen Sullivan White, class of '70.  We don't get to see each other often, so we try to make the most of the times that we can get together.

Yes, Michael was helping a troubled young man.  One night the young man was drinking and stabbed Michael.  Michael lost so much blood, that it caused loss of brain function, which resulted in the coma.  Annette was dedicated to his care.  I have so much admiration for her.

By the way,Marie,  I just this morning found your birthday wish for me on this site.  Thank you so much.  The day was quite and enjoyable.

Hi Everybody,

My memory has been been weird for a while.  I remember old things from long ago, short term is bad.  Today I set my cell phone down for a minute on the roof of my car and then drove home.  Now it is in little pieces and I had to buy a new one. I lost it twice before, but some nice person called me and returned it both times.  I was lucky.

But I remember when we were kids how much we looked forward to Halloween and Trick-or-Treating so we could get big sacks of candy.  My brother would eat all of his in a day or two.  I would hide some for later and try to make it last for a while.  When his was gone he would tell Mom that I had candy and wouldn't give him any.  So she would make me give him half of mine.  I thought that was pretty much unfair, but I knew better than to try to argue with Mom.

I also remember when we were little kids Mom would take us with her to shop at Sears on North Shepherd.  When we went in the door we  always had to walk right past where they were selling popcorn and the smell would drive us crazy for some popcorn.  We always begged Mom to buy us some, but she usually said no and then we would beg and plead the whole time we were in the store until she threatened us with bodily harm if we didn't shut up, LOL.

So I am wondering why I can remember little details of things that happened when I was a kid, but not what I had for lunch yesterday and things like that.  If the cops ever grab me and ask where I was and what I was doing on a certain day for an alibi, I will just be screwed, LOL.  No chance for me.

Sherri Cosgrove (Drake) (1964)

Oh Duncan that is so me...the not remembering ..my short term is bad too, but I can remember quite a bit from when I was smaller...and I have told my husband and anyone else  that  if I ever had to go to court and someone asks me where I was on so and so day and  at so and so time...I would just have to tell them that I don't know and have no idea...but I can tell them where I will be ...and that is up that proverbial creek without a paddle.  LOL.

I am so sorry to hear about Michael.  What a tragedy to happen to such good people!  Hope Annette is doing well now.

I knew Michael LaVallee since we were in the fourth grade at Coop Elementary.  He was always larger than the rest of the kids and was, therefore, an imposing figure.  I was sort of sweet on a girl in my class.  But when I found out that Michael liked her too, I decided that discretion was the better part of valor and turned my attention elsewhere.  But it turned out that Michael was a gentle giant and we were friendly with each other since.  Several years ago, I heard that he passed away, but never knew until now what had transpired.  So sad.  Here is Michael's senior photo and a photo I took of Michael and managed to get included in the 1960 yearbook.   I'm very happy I did because he liked it.

Yes, Mel, I remember that photo. It was used for his "Fire Captain" photo in the yearbook. He made certain that all halls and rooms were cleared during a fire drill.  A " gentle giant" is the perfect description for Michael. His heart was as big as he was. There is a special place in my heart for Michael.

TO ALL OLDSTERS.   I TAKE A VITAMIN CALLED "BIOTIN" FOR BETTER FOCUS AND MEMORY.   I LIKE IT.   IT MIGHT HELP FOR THOSE OF US WHO ARE NOT "TOO FAR GONE".   IT WAS RECOMMENDED BY OUR 1962 CLASSMATE, ELAINE DEMENT TARPLEY, A VITAMIN EXPERT.

Hi Charlotte,  Biotin has some other benefits.  I have a few friends that swear it helps prevent hair loss.  So, i jumped right on that, since i need that help there!  LOL  Also, the gal that cuts my hair recomends it...  I've been taking it about two years, and i don't think any more has fallen out, but once it's gone, baby its gone. :)  As far as memory retention...oh wait, i forgot what i was going to say.   lol

#2742  Butch, What boy from Coop doesn't remember "Woody" and his swats?? Greatest teacher there ever was!! We had a kid named Don Turnege (sp?) who must have gotten popped Every Day. Not me man! Once or twice during the whole sixth grade year was enough for this little guy. I remember Woody took a bunch of us boys on a field trip to Spring Creek where we went skinny dipping all day. I had the best time and the worst sunburn of my young life. Here is a quote I remember from the first day in his class: "My name is Mr. Woods. You can call me Mr. Woods or Woody, but don't let me hear you call me anything else." GREAT GUY! Awesome teacher.

In response to your post regarding the "shy kids".  I was one of those.  I did not have a lot of friends in high school.  I was small which equated, in some people's minds, to stupid, ugly, not athletic and definitely not popular.  I can't speak for others, but the reason I don't come to reunions is fear of the same rejection that I got in school.  I went to our 10 year reunion (class of 1972), and interacted with no one.  I tried.

I certainly don't dwell on this everyday, but the scars are deep.  If you've never been through it, you have no idea.

I was thinking about how much money I have saved in my life from never having had any children.  This has allowed me to retire at a younger age.  A good thing.  However, the drawback to this is that now I have no grandkids to show me how to use my cell phone.

Back in the good old days there were a lot of cute commercials.  We used to learn the songs and sing along, like the Oreo song "Little girls have pretty curls, but I like Oreos......"   And the Oscar Myer song "O I wish I were an Oscar Myer weiner, that is what I'd truly like to be, because if I were an Oscar Myer weiner, everyone would be in love with me"

But now most of the commercials on TV are so irritating that I grab my remote and hit the mute button for most of them.  Also, Jax beer had some good ones, and Brylcream.  They seldom have any really good ones any more.  At least, I don't remember any in the last few years, but that doesn't mean anything cuz I don't remember what I had for lunch, LOL

Kathy Blackshear Kenzel, what a drag that you had such bummer of a time at our 10 year.  I do know, how being snubbed can damage an ego, but not as deeply as yours run.  Really saddens me to hear it.  I am a little surprised, only because i remember you being a real cutie all through Burbank and Sam, and i would have thought you had a ton of friends/boyfriends. :)

I too, went to our 10 year, and what has stuck with me, the kids that i hung with in high school, (who attended other elementry and Jr. Highs) were who I thought i'd more than likely visit and hang with at that reunion, it didn't really materialize like that.  Who i did mostly enjoy visiting with, were kids from Roosevelt Elementary much more than any other era of my school years.

Kathy,

Sorry you had a reunion that no one would come up and speak ~ I think every person there should be greeted and made to feel welcomed and at ease. I was a little shy in school myself but soon learned that I should speak up and be heard. I had a job where I had to speak at large gatherings and that helped me to be able to speak to people even if they didn't speak to me.

I now do weddings and the ceremony I conduct in front of huge gatherings.

If we plan a multi year reunion I will be sure you know about it and have you come and I will try and get you to have a better time. We are knocking around the idea of doing one next year. DON'T give up on going to them. I will keep you posted and if you would like to help with the reunion we would be glad to have you join us.

Take care

Judy
