In Memory

John Joseph "Joe" McDonald - Class Of 1978

John Joseph "Joe" McDonald

January 7, 1960 - January 8, 1979

I would like to add an "In Memory" of Joe McDonald, class of 1978. While working for SeisCom Delta he died offshore in the summer of 1978. He was electrocuted while drilling a hole on the deck 175ft seismic ship with a 220volt drill. A wave washed over and connected him to the electricity. His last words were “Pull the DAM plug”. The crew was completely unprepared and could not revive him. The helicopter took 4 hours to reach the ship and 4 hours to get to the emergency room where he was pronounced dead.

Joe McDonald lived his life as full as possible every second. A born leader with great looks and intelligence, he was a great son, brother, and friend to so many. He became synonymous with a red Dodge Charger, pre-football game antics, and great parties with Aerosmith, Van Halen and Bacardi Rum. He worked very hard throughout most of highschool supporting himself as well as helping to support his family - all while earning great grades. He was a profoundly positive person and tectonic influence to Barton, Kelly, Tilt, Karen, David, Mike, Jon, plus several - surely me and many others... both in his graduating class and mine. His powerful character and force of personality kept his friends drug-free and more or less out of serious trouble. Joe is still missed.

Barton,

It was January 8, 1979.  The day after his birthday.  I remember it well.  He was the first friend of mine who passed away.  Joe had a heart of gold and was an incredible friend.  And as it has been said, he brought a lot of us together and deeply affected our lives.  I still miss him.  I like to think he's riding around somewhere in that red Charger with the black roof just enjoying the ride.

Michael, Barton and Daniel,

Thank you for sharing these thoughts and memories of Joe. I don't believe I knew Joe but your memories of him make me wish I had known him. What a loss for our world - a young man who had true character and was such a role model. I'm sure he is still looking over all of you and those whom he inspired. God rest his soul!
