In Memory

Ellen Kay Morris (Cook) - Class Of 1970

Ellen Kay Morris Cook

December 24, 1952 - February 1, 2013

Ellen Morris Cook, 60, of Matthews, NC, passed away peacefully on February 1st, 2013. Ellen succumbed to the cancer that she bravely fought for several years. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing.

Ellen was born in Ft. Worth, Texas, on December 24th, 1952, to the late Albert "Bud" and Billie Morris. She graduated from Westchester High School in Houston, TX in 1970. Ellen then proceeded to earn her nursing degree from the University of North Texas.

Ellen married her college sweetheart, Leon, in September of 1974. Ellen and Leon remained happily married until Leon's passing in December of 2012. Ellen was born in Ft. Worth, but also spent some of her childhood in Wyoming and New Mexico before eventually moving to Houston.

In 1978, she and her husband headed for Dallas, Texas, to start a family. Ellen worked as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in pediatrics for several years. Later in her career, Ellen worked in the health insurance industry as an advocate for patients and their families. Her family moved to Matthews, NC, in 1993, where they found a church home at Matthews Presbyterian Church. Ellen was a member of the choir, and an active member of the Presbyterian Women's Group. Ellen and Leon joined St. Matthew Catholic Church of Charlotte in 2008, and remained as members until the time of their respective departures.

Ellen was absolutely dedicated to her friends and family. She exemplified the true nature of a caring friend, wife, and mother. Both witty and smart, Ellen found humor and joy in everyday life. Ellen was an amazingly gifted musician. She mainly played the violin, but she had the talent to pick up and play the mandolin, guitar and some piano. Ellen also had a beautiful singing voice. She loved the beach, and particularly liked to go surf fishing any time she had the chance. When Ellen was diagnosed with cancer, she immediately became active in a cancer survivors' support network, and she remained energetic and strong in the group until her passing. Ellen always put the needs of others ahead of her own. She had a driving force to make sure people around her always felt comfortable and at ease. Ellen was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmamma, and friend. She was a kind soul, and brought joy to all those she ever knew or met. Ellen will be greatly missed, but will live on in the hearts and minds of those she loved.

Ellen is survived by her son, Travis Lee Cook of Wrightsville Beach, NC; daughter, Maegan Williams and husband Brian of Sneads Ferry, NC; granddaughter, Sara Williams; and brother, Phillip Morris and wife Cheryl of Galveston, TX.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Cook; father, Albert Byron Morris; and mother, Billie Chance Morris.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 9th, 2013, at 1:00pm at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Charlotte, NC. Please consider a donation to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation or Stand Up To Cancer.
