Lydia Anne Black (1976)

During the pandemic, Corki was one of the top girlfriends I wanted to find. I sadly found out she passed away in March, 2016. Corki, Barbara Sheriff, Liz Keating and myself were the only ones from our 1976 graduating class to attend Trinity University in SA. I knew these women from HS but really bonded with them at Trinity, especially Corki. Corki and Barb had arranged to be roommates before our freshman year at Trinity. They had great suitemates and the five of us all become fast friends. We all lived in Thomas Dorm which was for females exclusively. Thomas has large suites with balconies. Thomas was built on the side of a hill. The main front door of this dorm had a walkway over a garden below and it entered the 2nd floor of Thomas dorm. The first floor of Thomas opened on the back side and had a door at ground level. There was one suite on the first floor and it was Corki's suite. Corki's suite had the largest covered patio in the whole building because it was connected to their suitemates with one slab. We all had sliding glass doors that opened onto our balconies and so did this suite. Their  patios were connected to what we all eventually called " the garden", The garden was one step down and there were no rails like we had with the balconies. The walkway was over head. This was by chance since freshman had no priority over any specific suite/room and we all had to stay in a dorm when we were freshmen. The suite, patio and the garden made their private area huge.  I have never seen a setup like this in a dorm room still. I saw their space before Barb and the suitemates. Corki opened the door and my jaw dropped to the floor. . All Corki said was "Can you believe this? "  My mind went to the exact same place as everyone else's did when they saw this suite for the first time. This mind you was just a few months after we all graduated. Those who knew Corki in HS will understand that the parties this suite threw were epic. Kegs of beer in the garden along with extra desk chairs, chairs removed from the dining hall and patio furniture everyone in Thomas owned because of the balconies.  I brought my patio chairs including a recliner. The suite would be packed with classmates including guys mind you. This was never a monitored female dorm. The bathroom was packed because the toilets were private. Terri Taggart would join us from San Marcos. Others from our graduating class showed up at these parties. Linda Sheriff , who was a freshman at Duke,  would attend because Barb and Linda had staggered holiday and spring break schedules Linda brought her boyfriend from Duke once. Corki, Barb and I did not run in the same dating circles but the three of us and Corki's suitemates spent numerous hours in that suite laughing hysterically. Corki was funny!!! Corki graduated from Trinity with a degree in business and geology. Corki was   smart !!! During summers in college and after graduation, she and I would get together to hang out at her parents pool in Houston or we would go to Surfside, just the two of us. When I moved to Colorado I lost touch with her and her younger sister. I grew to love Corki, Barb and Liz from this college experience and I will never forget any of these incredible and strong women. Still searching for Barb Sheriff. The song "Hotel California" was one of Corki's and my favorites back then. We loved it. I still do. Every time I hear it, it takes me right back to that amazing suite and I picture Corki and I sitting in the desk chairs listening to it by ourselves with the sun streaming into the garden through the walkway above. Corki has been in my in my heart for decades and will never leave. See you at the Hotel California, Corki. RIP my dear friend.
