Charles William Eggert, Jr., 62, of Houston, TX, passed away on October 10, 2018, surrounded by family, after a long battle with melanoma. Charles was born on April 29, 1956 in Greenville, South Carolina to Charles W. and Frances D. Eggert. He grew up in Houston with his three brothers and sister. Charles attended Westchester High School in Houston (Class of 1974) and went on to become a Longhorn (Hook‘Em!), attending the University of Texas at Austin where he graduated with both a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architectural Engineering. He went on to earn his Professional Engineering (PE) license in Texas, Florida and Virginia, of which he was extremely proud. While at the University of Texas, Charles was actively involved in and served as president of the Longhorn Singers, where he made some of his closest friendships and met his wife, Cindy. They fell in love and were married in Houston on August 25, 1979. After graduation, Charles worked for structural engineering firms in Austin before accepting a position in Houston with Haynes Whaley Associates, currently Cardno Haynes Whaley, where he proudly worked the past 29 years and advanced to the position of Vice President. One of his favorite activities was participating in the Annual AIA Sandcastle Competition in Galveston with his fellow colleagues. Charles also enjoyed bowling in various leagues and competed across the country. While Charles’ career was a source of pride, it paled in comparison to his love for Cindy and their family.
As a child, Charles worked with his brothers to build go-carts, model rockets, and numerous woodworking projects. As he matured, his passion led him into architectural design and engineering construction. Charles was a perfectionist and took tremendous pride in his work. Always eager to help find workable solutions to any problem, he was often called on by family, friends and colleagues for advice and assistance. While still in college earning his degrees, Charles designed and managed the construction of his father’s art studio. Family and friends were of utmost importance to Charles. He led by example by treating others with respect and always extending a helping hand. His kindness and infinite patience were a constant source of comfort to those around him. Charles faced life’s challenges with love and courage, never complaining but always searching and diligently working for a viable solution. He carried this same heroic trait while battling cancer. After undergoing eighteen months of intense treatments and surgeries, he made the selfless decision to halt the cancer treatments. Charles final desire was for his family to be well cared for and to spend quality time with them and his close friends.
Charles is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Cindy; his children, daughter Christine Eggert, son Charles Eggert III, daughter Catherine Eggert; grandson and the apple of his eye, Noah Anderson; mother Frances Eggert; brother Joseph Eggert and his wife, Leslie; brother Michael Eggert; brother Richard Eggert and his wife, Sharon; sister Dianne Broyles and her husband, Larry; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Maurice and Patricia LeGrand; sister-in-law Sandra Paulley and her husband, Tom; brother-in-law John LeGrand; as well as eleven nieces and nephews.
Charles was predeceased by his father, Charles W. Eggert, Sr., and his sister-in-law, Michael's wife, Mary Eggert.
A private Memorial Service and burial will be held at a later date.
The family wishes to thank all of the dedicated doctors, nurses, and staff at MD Anderson Cancer Center and Heart to Heart Hospice for their compassionate care over the last eighteen months.
