The Little Black Dress sure has received a lot of attention! I like the bright colors myself… reds and yellows. And while we’re discussing fashion, could I ask you women why you need so many shoes? I helped a friend move into her new home and I think she had almost a 100 pairs of shoes!!! Her closet was full. Me… I have five or six pairs at the most, and I’m most comfortable when I’m wearing none of them, at least around the house. I guess I’m just a barefoot country boy at heart.

Jim… are you as surprised as I am at Glavine’s release? At the way it was handled?
A Dairy Festival, huh? Sounds like I’d be right at home.

Have a great weekend everyone! And… a Happy 40th Anniversary to Kay & Mike Smith tomorrow! Congratulations!

You know Don, I have always been a great fan of Glavine's. But I wondered why did they bring him back in the first place. I really thought if anything they would hire those three guys in the front office. Especially if they wanted to stay in baseball! I would have rather they tried harder to keep John. But you never know with the Braves!

The Dairy Festival is a very good festival, if you are
interested. Free music, speaches, parade, BBQ, free milk
and ice cream. And then there is "The Tar Baby Road Race". Come one come all! You really can have a good time, but I'm headed for the hills! Have a great weekend!!

Happy Monday one and all! I trust you had a good weekend. Kathy I hope your yard sale was a success. We also had one and took in about $500. I told my neighbor I only lost about $2000. It's crazy how we collect so much stuff that becomes worthless. We still have our living room full of boxes of trash that will be sent to Goodwill to become someone's treasure and bags and boxes of clothes to be picked up for a homeless shelter. I was flat worn out when we wrapped everything up about 5:00. We are struggling with clutter but feel like we are gaining the upper hand. I guess I had better get to work. Have a blessed day and week. Later.

Well here it is Tuesday already! I hope everyone is doing well and getting all those summer projects done. With it being so hot, we didn't start our yardwork until 7:30 last night - quit about 9:00. Up at 5:00 this morning to do a little more before heading to work. I still have flooring sitting in the kitchen ready to redo our bedroom and a new piece of furniture sitting in the living room waiting on the new floor to be put down. We've started putting in a gravel walk around the side of the house. I got part of the weed block put down last night but Sherron decided it needs to be longer! I think we (she) has decided on the border material. Once we (she) decides on the gravel, we'll have it delivered and start the FUN part. I figure about 5 tons should do it. (Oh, my aching back!) Got a busy day today at work so no rest here! Hope you all have a great day! Stay cool out there! Later.

Wednesday already and here I am on the horns of another dilemma. We've started installing this walkway around our house. Our intention was to use stone but after thinking about it, rubberized mulch might be a better choice. Mulch will cost more but will be easier to walk on and the GK's won't be throwing like they would rocks. Anyone had any experience with the rubberized mulch?? Later.

06/10/09 09:44 AM #589

Donald Chandler

Good Morning.

No experience with rubberized mulch, Gary. Sorry. Sounds like you and Sherron have been busy as bees. I would tip my cap to you if I were wearing one. I worked in the yard on Saturday but more than made up for it on Sunday when we went on a picnic with our Sunday School class and I ate far too much. We need to do a yard sale too and raise a few bucks... especially after we took one of our cars in for service yesterday and ended up with a bill of over $1,000! Ouch!

Well, Jim... our Braves are on a winning streak! Three in a row!

Have a great Hump Day, everyone!

06/10/09 11:48 AM #590

Dick Moore

Gary, we put some of the mulch you are talking about under a backyard swing we have. So far, so good. It looks just like mulch, but it has not been tested by grandkids yet. However, we have had other kids over, and because it looked like mulch they were not interested in it. Good luck with all that work. I know it is looking good.

Don, sorry abut the car expenses. Never fun, but as Dick is famous for telling me, "It's cheaper than a new car". I love him, but I find his logic frustrating at times.

Happy abut the Braves, too, Jimmy, although we don't hear much about them up here. As a matter of fact, most of what I hear, I hear from y'all. Our local paper is so all about Ohio. Especially since Dayton lost NCR to Atlanta last week. That didn't go over well up here, but who could blame them with those great tax incentives? I certainly don't.

Oh, and I want to apologize to my husband for responding to our User Forum bucket list under his name. So, if you read a couple of entries and think, "I always thought Dick was smarter than that", well, you're right. It was me. I didn't know he was logged in.

So long for now.
Diane

Diane Harris (Moore)

Uh, I am very sorry. I see that I still didn't know Dick was logged in. I just corrected that.

Please excuse any and all confusion, and just go far, far back in time to 1968, and remember. Some people may change their looks, but their brains remain the same.

Sheepishly,
Diane

Connie Morgan (White)

I've enjoyed keeping up with several of you on the message forum! It is so good to hear from y'all.
Diane, I saw the Association years ago. Ahh - memories.
Don, you will have to bring your graduation speech the next time we get together.
No news with me. Just work and seeing family when I can. I do hope to go fishing this week-end if the weather permits.
I read in the Echo tonight that Dennis Helmreich's younger brother, Dean, died on May 30. My sympathy to all the family.
Gary, I know all your "doing and re-doing" will look great. You've got to be tired.
I hope you all have a good week-end.

love,
connie

Dick, er, Diane, uh whoever believes a repair is better than a new car payment - what I HATE about the new cars is the technology that forces you back to the dealer and HIGH repair costs. I just traded my truck for a 2007 Jeep - not new but oh boy the technology in this thing. The dealer only had one key. No problem, just go to a locksmith and have him make another one, right? WRONG!!! I had to go back to the dealer and pay $114.00 for ONE key!!! After getting the key I stopped at a store on the way back to the office and tried to open the tailgate with this magical key. IT DIDN"T WORK!!!! I immediately returned to the dealer - drove directly to the service manager's desk and said, "Shouldn't a $114 key open the lock?" They were very apologitic but when the salesman called back for the thank you for buying from us call, I let him hold it! I didn't go into the whole story because it still makes my blood boil. I did discover that once you have two of these magical keys, you can buy the blanks for less than $20 a piece online, have them cut by a locksmith for $4 each and program them yourself for free.

I'm sorry to hear about Dennis's brother. I wish I had known.
Glad to hear from you, Connie after a long absence. Hope all is well with you.
I guess Jim and Don are in mourning this AM. I see the Braves lost another one. That's the way it goes. Have a great day, once Jim and Don get through crying. Later!

I just saw this posted in the ABH obits and thought you would all like to know:

Dean Walter Helmreich, of Dunwoody, Ga., died on May 30, 2009, after an extended illness. He was born January 5, 1952, in Quincy, Ill.
He graduated from Oglethorpe County High School in 1969. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia with a B.S. degree in Environmental Health in 1975, and he received the Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Georgia in 1982. Dean worked with computers thereafter, providing high-level programming services to a variety of employers and customers.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter George Helmreich. He is survived by his mother, Elma Harris Helmreich, of Crawford; a son, Jeremiah Liles, of Snellville; a sister, Janice Helmreich Fickett, of Savannah; a brother, David Lee Helmreich, of Savannah; and a brother, Dennis Peter Helmreich, of Lexington; as well as six nieces and nephews.
Interment will be in the Forsyth, Ga., City Cemetery at a time to be announced later. A visitation will be held at the Crawford Baptist Church on Saturday, June 13, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Dean requested that contributions be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Peachtree Cremation is in charge of arrangements, 678.205.5550.

I too am saddened to hear of the death of Dennis' younger brother Dean. I remember him well from riding our school bus, and their older sister Janice too. It is always tough to lose a brother or sister, especially one so young. My sympathies go out to Dennis and the entire Helmreich family.

It was great to see Connie back on the forum. It is always a treat to hear from you. So, you want to see that graduation speech? I may have to get permission from the ACLU. Keep us posted, Connie... we count on you as our Oglethorpe County correspondent.

That Braves winning streak was very short lived indeed. Same story... good pitching but not enough hitting. No tears here. I have a good day, win or lose...even with outrageous car maintenance bills.

Hope all of you have a good day too.

CRYING!? WELL I DO FEEL A "SINKING" FEELING WHEN GEORGIA OR THE BRAVES LOSE A GAME.... HERE IS TO A WINNING SEASON FOR EVERYONE!! HAVE A GREAT WEEK.

06/11/09 01:46 PM #597

Jimmy Willis

DICK!!! SURE GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU! I KNOW WE ALL GOT TO WORK. BUT, SLOW DOWN A LITTLE DUDE! BY THE WAY, THE BRAVES ARE PLAYING RIGHT NOW! DON, YOU AT THE GAME TODAY?

06/11/09 02:18 PM #598

Donald Chandler

Jim... I''d sure like to be at the game, but I'm here in my office, following the game on TV. We're ahead right now by one run. The way it's been going, that might be all the run support that Vasquez gets. He really has pitched well.

Diane & Dick... or is it Dick & Diane? I know it says that "the two shall be one."

Lost another one! DAG-NAB-IT! (does anyone have any idea of the origins of that word/phrase?) Did I just cuss?

I THINK IT WAS GRANDPA MCCOY DON! AND IT GOES DOUBLE FOR ME!

06/11/09 08:31 PM #601

Diane Harris (Moore)

Don, I am with Jimmy, in that I can hear Grandpa McCoy saying that, but then my daddy said it too.

Connie, I am sooo glad to hear from you. I'm gonna try and give you a call soon. I got a call from Gail the other day, and it was the highlight of my week!

Dick and I were so very sad to learn about Dean's death. We remember all the Helmreich kids and how smart each of them was. Losing a sibling is really, really tough, and Dean was much to young to leave. We will probably get that Echo next week. Thanks, Gary, for posting the obituary.

I am writing this from Lake Erie. My sister had planned to come up to see us this week and Dick had taken today and tomorrow off, but at the last minute they were unable to come. He was going to lose those days if he didn't take them, so, YAY, we actually took off for a couple of days. It was so funny tonight at supper. We had just checked in to our hotel and went to grab some local perch for supper. A guy sits down next to us with a GA Bulldog shirt on. Wouldn't you know he was from Madison County?! There were three of them. Then the woman at the next table heard us talking and she said, "I just moved back up here after living in Lawrenceville for 18 years". Then a guy at another table said, "I have a great friend who lives in Watkinsville". It ended up that they knew folks we knew, etc. and you would have thought we were in Athens instead of on the shore of Lake Erie! Four different tables! It really is a small world and this kind of thing has happened to us so often.

Of course Dick's laptop came with us, so I thought I'd check in. I am so glad I did, but was so sorry to read the news of Dean's death.

Our love to all of you,
Diane (really, it's me, not Dick)

Before too much else is written under my login by Diane, I need to clear up a couple of things claimed under my sign-in.

I had tried to respond to Don's "Milk a cow" bucket list item and had logged in on Diane's computer (our home computer) and not logged out. Her subsequent entries were under my login.

I agree completely with having milking a cow on you bucket list--at least once. There is something about milking a few cows that keeps one well grounded. Besides, a milk bucket might be one of the first "bucket list" items you think of. I can remember those hot bumid Georgia summers and wanting so badly to be finished milking. As I look back, Dad had to have had days when he was sick, or hurt to a degree that anyone with a normal job would call in sick. He never did. Nor did he complain about not having days off--even with a 365-day/year job with no sick days.

Gary, we have not used the rubber mulch. My assessment of it is purely spectulative. It is very expensive (at least at Sam's Club--therefore it could only be used on small areas. My fear is that it would get mixed in with the dirt and never degrade. Then you would have to someway separate it from other stuff. (but then I guess that you could use it again.)

It was Diane who gave blood. Her type is actively sought out by blood banks and mosquitos.

I was saddened by Dean's passing. I have great memories of times wih him in the band and all the times spend with the Helmerich family. You are in our prayers.

I'll try to be better at posting. Diane keeps me up on all the news.

My best to you all!

Now that you mention it Jim, I do remember that it was Grandpa McCoy. I was thinking maybe Gabby Hayes for some reason. Does anyone remember Gabby?

"YOU BET-CHA"!!!!! HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND! I'M GOING TO AUBURN TO PLAY GOLF. GO DAWGS!!!

Have a great golfing weekend, Jim!

And great to see you on the forum, Dick. I hope you and Diane have a nice getaway! I think most people don't realize that dairy farmers work 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Cows do not take days off and have to be milked every day! God bless dairy farmers, but I'm glad I found somethng else to do for a living.

Well I think Liz and I will have a quiet weekend and stick around May-retta. Have a good one everybody! Go Braves!

HAPPY MONDAY!!! I took off Friday to put down new flooring in our bedroom. Of course, one good thing leads to another. Sherron decided we needed to paint an "accent" wall in the bedroom - added about a half day to the project. We managed to move back into our bedroom last night. I've got one more threshold to put down tonight and I'll be through; except for all the foo-foo that I'll have to hang as directed by my interior decorator. I hope the rubber mulch is as good as advertised. I'm having a ton (yes, 2100 lbs. to be exact) delivered today. We've already put down landscape cloth and I've got to finish installing the edging. Hopefully this will keep it from mixing with the dirt. Dick, you are correct - it is expensive!! About 50% more than rock but hopefully less work. I'm trying to make all of my projects low/no maintenance improvements. This old dog's learning some new tricks as he discovers he's too tired to do the old ones. I don't plan on re-doing any of this stuff again for at least 15 - 20 years. The phrase I remember from Grandpa McCoy was "GOL-DARN-IT". (I wonder if I spelled that correctly.) I did take off Saturday afternoon to attend the visitation for Dean. It was good to see Janice and David again after so many years. We went late so we could continue to our daughters for dinner so the crowd had thinned out but Janice said she was surprised at how many people came by. I think it was a good thing. Well, I hope and pray that you all have a blessed week. Later!

HAPPY TUESDAY! And a special Happy Birthday to Tessie!! Looks like another hot one today. I guess its time to drain the ole' hot tub and let it rest for the summer. Can't keep the temperature cool enough to enjoy unless you enjoy being scalded! And just when I need it the most. I figure two more evenings and I should have the walkway completed and then - maybe I'll take a break from projects for a few days. I still have several biggies I want to complete soon but they can wait.

It is funny that no matter where you go you can run into somebody from your neck of the woods. I guess the most far reaching I ever encountered was while we were making preparations to transit the Suez Canal and I struck up a conversation with the local commissary agent (the guy that got groceries delivered to the ship). Turns out he was from Madison County, GA! I hope you all have a GREAT day!! Later!
