Good Evening, Mates…
Well… I’ve started working on income taxes, and I’m not having fun yet. So I think I’ll ramble a little on the Class Forum instead…
You are funny, Connie… :-) The next time I come to visit you, I will try to make sure it is in that “small window of opportunity” when you are awake, smiling, and talking. LOL!
Kathy… I too find it hard to believe that Inez is no longer with us. It still doesn’t seem real. And, Kathy, I see on Facebook that you haven’t been feeling well. I hope you are feeling better tomorrow and can have fun celebrating your birthday. HAPPY BIRTHDAY WITH MANY BLESSINGS!
Diane… I would also love to see the movie “Get Low”, just because of Robert Duvall. Both he and Sissy Spacek are great actors, and Duvall especially has an amazing body of work. A few years ago, Liz and I were watching a video tape of “To Kill a Mockingbird”… great 1962 movie from a great book! We were both surprised to see that Duvall was in it too, one of his earliest movies, if not his first. He’s still going strong nearly 50 years later, and I still love him as “Gus” in “Lonesome Dove”!
Gary… I really enjoyed the “Photos of the Old West” in and around Deadwood, SD. One of the best trips that Liz and I ever made was a vacation to South Dakota with her Mom and Dad. We spent about a week there in the summer of 1993, seeing the sites and enjoying some of the most beautiful scenery in this great country. Badlands National Park and the Black Hills were amazing… a photographer’s paradise. Driving through some areas of the Badlands, you almost believe you are on the Moon or on another planet. We visited Mount Rushmore (very inspiring), and not many people realize that Gutson Borglum, the sculptor of Mount Rushmore was the original sculptor of the Stone Mountain Confederate Memorial here in Georgia before he left it unfinished and went to South Dakota. And if you ever visit the area, please don’t miss the Crazy Horse Mountain Memorial, a sculpture of the famed Indian Chief on a grand scale still in progress, which will not be completed until long after we are all gone to Glory. It will be much larger than Mount Rushmore. http://www.crazyhorsememorial.org We also visited Deadwood which is preserved as an Old West town. You can still visit the saloon where Wild Bill Hickok was shot in the back playing cards, and visit his grave and the grave of his sweetheart Calamity Jane just outside of town in Boot Hill Cemetery. In those old photos you posted, Gary, are some shots of the nearby Homestake Gold Mine which was still operating when we took a tour there in 1993, but they were not giving away any free samples on the day we visited. We also visited the local towns of Keystone, Lead, Hill City, Spearfish, and Sturgis (we missed their annual motorcycle rally). I took a photo of Liz on horseback posing with a local Sioux Indian Chief. We did attend the Black Hills Passion Play one evening (very nice) and made a day trip over to visit Devils Tower, Wyoming (there was an old photo of it on that link too). Most people remember Devils Tower from the movie “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” We took a hike (over a mile) around the base of the tower… it is a beautiful place to visit. One day we drove through Custer State Park and saw a herd of wild buffalo grazing, and I was tempted to get close with my camera, but we were warned not to get too close because they are very dangerous. But I did make a very close encounter with my very first buffalo burger (yummo!) on that trip and have loved them ever since. If you’ve never been to that part of the country, it is a wonderful place to visit and well worth a place on your “Bucket List”.
Enough rambling for now… I don’t think I’ll make it to midnight tonight, Connie. Enjoy the rest of your week mates! And HAPPY ST. PATRICK’S DAY to all ye of Irish descent, and any leprechauns amongst you... and should you partake of any "green beer", please don't drink and drive.
