I will be attending the funeral tomorrow also. The church is not a really large one, so for those of you attending, you may want to try to be there by 1:00 to get a seat. The church is just off hwy 72 on the left going into Colbert from Athens, and on right going out of Colbert toward Athens. There is a sign next to the hwy.

Good Morning Mates,

I will also be coming to the furneral later today. I have more

bad news. I learned a little while ago that the doctors are sending

Roy home later today or tomarrow. Not sure if he will be go home

are to Oconee Regional Hosp. in Milledgeville. The doctors say

there is no need to put him thru other treatment. They said the

cancer has spread to far to treat. They have given him a matter

of a few days/weeks to live.

I'll let you that want to know where they will be taking

him a soon as we know.

Jimmy, I don't even know if saying "Thanks for letting us know" is the right response, because I sure don't like to hear that kind of report. I'm glad though that you have had ways to find out about Roy. My prayers are with him, and I do appreciate you keeping us posted.

Sounds like many of you will be at the funeral today, and I'm glad. This is one of those many times that living this far away stinks. I was looking back over our reunion pictures and was reminded that Inez was the one who was in charge of getting all our Indian T-shirts that we wore to the ball game that Friday night. I'm so glad I still have mine, because it brings back a really happy memory of her.

Love to you all.

Rabun & I attended the funeral of our dear friend Inez today. What a lovely tribute the service was.

Pee Wee, thanks so much for the eulogy and the lovely singing. Rabun loved when  you told about the midnight paddle boat ride & is going to use it as a sermon illustration.

Rabun & I arrived early & I had time to look over the register to see the names of people who had attended the visitation & I saw many of our classmates names. I know that some of you had to work today. Those classmates whom I saw today at the funeral were Don, Joy, Beverly, Kathy, & Pee Wee. If any of the others were there I did not see them. We all sat near each other and chatted some before the service.

Connie, thanks for ordering the lovely arrangement. Please let me know how much my part is.

It's certainly sad to hear the news about Roy Nation. We need to pray for him & his family.

We have lost a lot of our classmates. I cherish the times we have been together & the memories I have of you all.

Take care, all of you.

Hello friends:

I hope you are all doing o.k.     I know this has been a sad time for the Class of '68.  Prayers continue to be lifted for Inez's family and friends and for Roy Nation.

Kathy, Don, Janie  (and the others that have asked), I will go to the florist tomorrow to pay the bill, so I don't really know the amount yet.   Several people gave me money at the visitation Sunday evening and Ray also gave me the $40. that was left from the reunion money.   Basically, folks are just giving any amount.   I am sure I have more than enough to pay for the flowers.   I am keeping everything written down, and will give the record and any money left to someone to keep up with it.   Maybe we can talk about that the next time we are able to get-together.   Several have said that it might be a good idea to keep some $ in a fund in case needs come up.

Gary, I don't know what you pay to keep this site up, but I know we would gladly pay you back for any expenses.   I am thankful for this way of communicating, keeping up with each other and sharing news.

Jim, thank you for the update, but I am sad to hear about Roy's sad report.   I had mailed him a "feel better soon" card yesterday.   I sent it to the address that Gary had on the list he had compiled when we were working on the reunion.  I am sorry I have not seen him since high school.

Thinking of reunion, I am more thankful than ever that we had that wonderful 40th. reunion and became "reaquainted" with so many of our class.   After graduation, "life" took us all in different directions.  Thankfully we were able to reconnect, remember, and re-establish ties and friendships.   I've always especially thought of Inez whenever I put on my red t-shirt that she had designed for us....   it will have a whole new meaning now.       I know that I repeat myself, but I love you guys.   I am thankful for what you have meant in my life and I am thankful for you now.    God bless you all.

My prayers are for Inez's family and for Roy Nation as he faces his current health challenges.

Inez and I shared a special bond that is unique to growing up in a large rural county--we rode the same bus to school.  As a result, I can remember knowing her as far back as the first grade, even though we weren't in the same homeroom.  As I have read the many tributes to her life and character, it is easy to begin to appreciate her in the roles of mother, grandmother, friend and mentor.   She built a strong family on the foundation of her faith.  Inez, all who knew you will miss you greatly.  Your legacy will continue after you.

Good morning, mates…

I made the trip to Colbert yesterday to say “goodbye” to Inez.  Actually, it was not so much “goodbye” as it was “see you later”… when “we all get together” again in Paradise.  My Brother Ron will be at that Class Reunion too.  Inez's funeral service was indeed a celebration of a life well lived.  She loved a lot of people and was loved by many.  Even though we may feel she left us too soon, she fulfilled her earthly purpose and was no doubt greeted by her Savior with “Well done, my good and faithful servant”.  I saw several of the Class of 68 there at the service… it was good to see Pee Wee, Kathy C., Beverly, Joy, and Kathy L again.  I’m sorry to have missed seeing those of you who attended the visitation Sunday night.   Pee Wee… you are a strong woman.  You did a wonderful job sharing some of your memories of Inez, and you sang like an Angel with your rendition of “He’ll Do It Again”.  Most people could not have done what you did.  Thank you very much.  And Connie… I agree with Kathy… you did a great job on choosing the flowers to represent the Class of 68.  Thank you… I put a check in the mail to you today.

Inez touched many, many lives that people will never know about.  Yesterday, I received a Facebook message from one of my nieces, Louise who knew Inez but did not know that I did.  And I had no idea that Louise knew Inez.  And I'm sure Inez had no idea that Louise was my niece.  It really is a small world.  It seems that some years ago Louise worked for a time at a telemarketing company called DialAmerica and she tells me that Inez was one of the supervisors then.  Louise added that, “I loved her very much.”  Inez touched many lives.

Both Diane and Connie mentioned the Reunion T-shirts.  I have a little story to share with you about that.  When Inez was working with the printer to get those shirts produced for us, I received an e-mail from her asking for a copy of the Indian Head Logo I designed for our Reunion Banner.  I e-mailed her a copy of the logo to pass along to the printer.  In a few days, I received another e-mail from Inez sending me proofs of several layouts the printer put together for the back of the shirt.  The logo was on the front, but they had designed three or four options to choose from for the copy on the back of the shirt: “Oglethorpe High Class of 68… 40 Year Class Reunion”.  Inez just wanted to know which one I preferred… they were ready to go to print.  I gave her my opinion and also noticed that in every layout, they had misspelled “Oglethorpe”… they typeset it as “Olgethorpe”… transposing the “g” and the “l”.  Fortunately the correction was made before they produced the final product.  That T-shirt will always bring back fond memories of Inez for me as well.  By the way, I am also reminded of our Senior High School Yearbook, "The Arrowhead".  Many of you will remember that on the title page of the finished product in big, bold letters is “ARRROWHEAD”… spelled with three “R”s.  I guess it stood for “readin’, ritin’, and rithmatic’.”  It sure didn’t stand for spelling.  :-)

Have a good week, mates.  It won’t be the same without Inez in our lives.

By the way, Jim… I am so sorry to hear the latest news on Roy Nation.  He is in our prayers.  Please keep us posted.  And, Jim… if you were at the funeral yesterday, I’m sorry I missed seeing you.

Well I didn't think I had anything to post, since I like Diane, was at a loss for words after Jim's news on Roy.  The only response that came to mind was, "DAMN"!  I will continue to pray for his recovery.  Connie, there is no charge for the site, but to all, "thank you for letting me contribute to the cause".  Had a hard few days, can't seem to shake whatever I caught last week so I finally called the doctor and got some drugs.

Ever ready to share my wealth of knowledge, and since no one else mentioned it - HAPPY FAT TUESDAY!  Marks the conclusion of CARNIVAL in RIO and the beginning of lent.  Don, bet you'd like to take some pictures THERE!!!!

Did you know it is also - PANCAKE DAY!

Many communities have a pancake festival or some kind of gathering to eat pancakes together before Lent. One of the oldest is in the village of Olney, England where an annual Pancake Race dates back five centuries! On Shrove Tuesday, women compete against each other in a 415-yard race in which they must carry a pancake in a skillet. The legend is that when the church bells rang for Shrove Tuesday service in the year 1445, a certain housewife was not finished grilling the cakes. Not wishing to ruin her pancakes, she ran to the church with pan in hand. The traditional race will be carried on today in Liberal, Kansas as well. The Kansas event is now a three-day festival.  ....  Looks like IHOP for dinner this evening!

And lest we gentlemen forget, March 8th is also:

International Woman’s Day,  a “major day of global celebration of women. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements” .... Thank you ladies!

Who knew?!?  Well I've about emptied my fountain of knowledge for today.  I pray you will all be blessed during the coming days.  Later.

Don I was at the service yesterday, and did see you as you were

crossing the parking lot at the church. Sorry I didn't get to the church

until late and was in the very back. Sorry I didn't get to speak to most

of you. I thought I would see you at the cemetery.

Being an architect what did you think of the ceiling in the church.

Those timbers were beautiful and the acoustics were great.

As we all know we will miss Inez. And there is no greater feeling than

that peace in knowing we will attend another reunion.  Where not only

Inez, but we'll get to see all our mates again.  As the little boy says

"and an't nobodies not going to be there"!

Later Mates!

Jim, I'm so sorry that I missed you at the funeral yesterday. I just was not able to go to the burial since I would not have been able to stand due to back/leg pain.

I was sad to hear the bad news about Roy and I will be praying for him and his family. I do hope that he knows Christ as his Savior so we can meet again some day in a land where we'll have new bodies that will no longer have illness and pain.

Pee Wee certainly did do a wonderful tribute to Inez and sang beautifully. Wish more could have attended the funeral.

Take care all.

Mates,

My friend with the Putnam County Medical. Called and said

that Roy is in very very critical condition. Said it was only a

matter of time.  I plan to go out to see him this afternoon.

If any of you want to send him anything please do so now.

His address is, 114 Long Shoals Road, Eatonton, Georgia 31024.

Jim, please, please give Roy my regards....   Tell him that many in the class are thinking of him and praying for him.                The address you listed is not the address I sent the card to, so I guess it will come back.    I felt a little foolish sending a "hope you feel better soon" card after I got your update on his status.      Thanks for visiting him.    I remember him as such a nice guy.

I hope the rest of you are doing well.   Gary, I sure hope you are soon much better!!   I was afraid something was wrong when we did not hear from you for several days.   You are in prayers also.

Take care my friends.

Jim... I'm so sorry to hear the latest report on Roy.  Thanks for keeping us updated.  And I'm sorry that I missed you at Inez's funeral.   I drove over Monday morning and stopped to visit and have lunch with my sister Marian and my niece Crissy in the Wolfskin District of Oglethorpe County.  Then I headed to Colbert and got to the church early and was sittting down front with some of our other mates.  I headed back to Marietta as soon as the church service was over and did not go to the cemetery.  Sorry I missed ya man.  By the way... I agree with you about the church.  Even though it looks pretty plain on the outside, that sanctuary is wonderful!  I noticed that big open ceiling too with those timbers.  Very nice!  And the stained glass windows were nice too.  I'm sure many people were blessed through the years hearing Inez sing in that holy place.  And just to clear things up Jim... I am not an architect, although I studied architecture for over two years at Georgia Tech and do appreciate good architecture.  I switched to Graphic Design when I left Tech to go to UGA.

Gary... sorry to hear you haven't been feeling well.  Hope you are on the mend with those drugs.  And I must admit... taking photos at Carnival in Rio would be fun!!!  :-)  But Liz might not appreciate it as much as I would.  I've seen video of Carnival on the Travel Channel before, and I'm afraid my camera lens might fog up.  Zoom, zoom, zoom!

Judy Stewart (Findley)

Hello all,

I am very thankful to all of you who represented our class at Inez's "celebration of her life". I would have loved to have been there. Connie, thank you so much for what has been described as a beautiful arrangement of flowers. PeeWee, I know your heart is broken to continue without your "bestest" friend. You & she both certainly have "good taste" in picking your friends. The picture of you & Inez was just absolutely beautiful. The "joy of the Lord" was shinning in both of your faces. Kathy, I know you have such fond memories of Inez, also.

May God continue to "carry" Inez's family. Her absence is surely "heart wrenching" for all of those family and extended family members.

And, Roy, oh my goodness, what can I say ? All I do know is, "God is good, all the time". May God Bless & Keep you all.

Love & hugs,

Judy

Oh my, how sad about Roy. I'm praying for him & family as I am continuing to pray for Inez's family. After the burial & everyone goes home the lonely times really set in for those left behind & they continue to need our prayers.

I feel badly that probably none of the classmates will get to attend Roy's service since he lives that far away.Maybe we can send a flower.I know that Jim will probably go. Jim, please keep us posted.

Gary, I do hope you are feeling better. Please stay well.

Hello Mates,

As I said yesterday I went out to Roy's last night. Most

of his family was there with him. His condition is such that

they are having to keep him sedated all the time. His

breathing was a struggle and his wife said the pain was

more than he could bare.

Roy's mother was there . I had no idea she was still

alive. Seeing her you would have thought she might have

been a sister. She said she remembered when Charles

Owens and I would come by their home sometimes going

out or to school. She asked what I remembered of Roy.  I told

her I'll always remember Roy as a fierce loyal friend.  That I

would always remember Roy in the eighth grade, I decided

I was going to play football. So in practice we were doing

one on one's and I drew Roy. He hit me so hard I saw

stars for two days.  She laughed and said he was a very

strong boy.

He's very very sick mates! Say a prayer that or Lord

want let him suffer long!

Diane Harris (Moore)

Jimmy, what a gift you gave to Roy's mother to be able to relate such a great story about her son. I'll bet you gave her that laugh exactly when she thought she'd never smile again. You were there at the perfect time.

Good memories serve a great purpose. Not only do they cheer up our own spirits, but when shared they do the same thing for others. "YAY" for happy memories, and those who make them and those who share them!

Praying for Roy's peaceful passage.

Oh man!... that's tough news.  Not a good week for the Class of 68.  Jim... thanks for being a good friend of Roy's and keeping us informed.  I woke up early this morning praying for Roy... that "God's Will Be Done."  He is no longer suffering.  My prayers are for his family and friends, for strength and comfort.  I do not remember Roy at all.  I was at OCHS for only our Junior and Senior year, and I do not find his picture in either the 1967 or 1968 yearbooks.  Can someone explain to me... was he part of the class in earlier years?  I know there were a number of people at OCHS with the "Nation" surname.  In fact, I was wondering if he might be related to Inez in any way.  Maybe some of you could help me out with that.

Thanks, mates.

03/10/11 10:25 AM #2103

Gary Grice

Don, Jim's rememberance of Roy pretty much characterizes him, except he failed to say or he was too stunned to remember, I'll bet Roy helped him up after ringing his bell.  He was a gentle giant. Quiet and easy going.  He left school early and joined the Army (correction, Marines).  Like most young men that day, he ended up in Viet Nam.  I never saw him after he left school but I'll always remember his warm smile.  My condolences go out to all who knew him.

03/10/11 12:11 PM #2104

Jimmy Willis

You know Gary he did help me up! And the very next play

he rang that same bell! With that big broad grin of his. I

reminded him of that  day and we had a good laugh

really was a great guy!

He left us at the start of the eleventh grade to join the

marines! We went down some of the very same roads In

Vietnam. Even thou he was a Marine and I was in the Army.

Oh what sad news. He was a quiet, sweet, giant of a guy. Jim, I didn't know that his mom was still alive either. Do you know if she still lives in Oglethorpe county? Did Roy have children? I will send a sympathy card to his wife to the address you posted the other day. I hope you can make it to his funeral to represent our class and let them know how sad we are about their loss and that we will be praying for the family.

Dick and I are so sorry to hear about Roy. We were comparing our memories, and it seems that all of who remember him share one common opinion. He was a nice, quiet guy. As I said before, he was always gentlemanly around me, and I always was impressed by things like that.

I found his obituary on the McCommon's Funeral Home in Greensboro website, but I am not clever enough to be able to post it on here. I think right now, the only info listed is his "Roy Nation, 1948-2011" , with a photograph. Perhaps there will be a more complete obituary by tomorrow. Some of you wizards can post it if you want. Makes me sad. Had you not let us know, Jim, I'm sure we wouldn't have found out.

Don, as a side note, it's hard for me to believe you came to OCHS as a junior. It seems like you were always there. I mean that as a compliment, by the way.

G'night from Ohio, where we are currently having snow showers. Brrr.
