Rodney Poole

We don't usually write about alumni from other Enloe classes since they have their own sites. This is an exception. Remember that we had no senior class that first year, just juniors. That class would be the first graduated the next year, 1964. So as sophomores we only had that one class to observe and emulate. One member of that class was a bespectacled young man named Rodney Poole. Not an athlete, not a who's who(I checked), just an ordinary guy in most respects as I remember. And he was very polite and friendly. Qualities that don't get a lot of attention necessarily. But what he majored in was service to the school in any way he could, plus he did it with a lot of character. All of this might have gone unnoticed except for an assembly in the spring of '64 when we were all gathered in our auditorium. At one point, Rodney's name was called in recognition of his service to the school and the entire student body rose to give him a standing ovation. That's not big with most teens then or now, but I was impressed and never forgot. I'm telling this because just the other day we lost Rodney and I recalled this event and thought I'd remind everyone else. Sometimes the young(that was us) can surprise and inspire, just as Rodney did in his two years at Enloe. I'm glad  I knew him, even if only for a short time.
