Mr. Kahdy's Obituary

George Assif Kahdy

OCTOBER 6, 1921 – SEPTEMBER 15, 2023

George A. Kahdy passed away September 15, 2023 after a long and fruitful life.

Brought up in Macon, Ga, he graduated from Lauier High School and attended Georgia Tech for one year. He volunteered for the military and servicing as a fighter pilot during WWII. After the war, George and his wife, Nell, and three children lived in Knightdale, NC where he returned to school. He graduated with honors from Wake Forest and later he earned graduate degrees and advanced superintendent's certification from UNC Chapel Hill and Duke Universities.

George began his profession in education as a teacher at Needham Broughton High School, in Raleigh. Later he became principal at Thompson Elementary, Hugh Morson Jr. High, and Enloe High School. He was promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Raleigh Schools and later the NC State Department of Public Instruction as State Director of Special Education. For nine years George served as Assistant State Superintendent for Instruction. Then, from 1984-1994, he worked in the Governor's Office as Executive Director of the NC Business Committee for Education and Education Advisor to Governors Martin and Hunt.

During his career, and afterwards, George spoke highly of his students, faculty, and colleagues with whom he maintained close relations until his death. He credited them and his loving family for his long and happy life. At the Cedars of Chapel Hill, he made many friends among members of the staff.

Geroge was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nell, after 71 years of marriage. Surviving are daughters, Barbara Estes (Jim) and Georgette Stone (Fred); Son, Dr. George N. Kahdy (Martha); five grandchildren, Mettrie Lari (John), Demeree Stone, Fred Stone, Dr. Kathryn Kahdy, and Dr. Kristin Bradwell (Chad). There are nine great grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Adele, Janette, and Sally who live in Oregon and a sister, Virginia, who preceded, him in death; nieces and nephews, Wehbie, Salem, Mettrey; and the Saloom families.

Several Years ago, his high school students established a scholarship of endowment in his name. In lieu of flowers, tax deductible contributions can be made to The George A. Kahdy Enloe High School Alumni Scholarship Endowment, C.O. the NC Community Foundation, 3737 Glenwood Ave #460, Raleigh, NC 27612.
