Our classmate, Brenda Dalton, has had some health issues this past year.  She has had three leg surgeries and now is going to MD Anderson in Houston for more surgery and treatment for liposarcoma.  Please keep her in your prayers.  I'm sure she would enjoy hearing from you as well.

Thanks to Curtis Scott for the band pictures.   I imagine Tom Held or Pat will have some comments on the picture if they check in this week.  I hope everyone has a good week.  Nice weather here in Charlotte.  The Panthers and Colts are both fighting it out for last place.

Oh my !!!  That picture of Bob Horst on keyboards brings back memories of me & Pat's arch rival band...The Sygns !  I know this was taken at the KC Fairgrounds. I can recall the Sygns playing a dance there, but that particular night they played inside one of the buildings on the grounds, The pic of Bob Horst appears to have been taken outside. My guess is that this was the "Combo Contest"........a corny name for what was actually a talent contest/ Battle of the Bands.

In 1967 the Sygns kicked our butts and won first place......I "think" they won playing "Time Won't Let Me" that night (is that correct Curtis ?) 1968............ the Sygns did not enter and we won 1 st place defeating the Steve Coonrod / Bob Synder band. First place was an opportunity to enter the Battle Of The Bands at the Ind State Fair in August..................we declined the invitation. We were destined for much bigger things. Yes, that's right,  we played the Tastee Treet three times that summer and were more or less the "house band" at the Laz-D- Rollerink in Monroe City the summer of '68 and were the first band to play a "sock-hop" at the then new South Knox High School that fall.

Yeah...we hit the big time !!!!  (LOL)

Not sure if Curtis and The Sygns went to the State Fair in '67 ?

P.S. - BTW Curtis......superb drum roll coming out of the instrumental break in "Time Won't Let Me"  .......you always "nailed" that one......good job.

Tom - Great memories!  How do you remember all of those details?  Do you remember what happened to you yesterday?  Just kdiding, of course.

12/01/11 07:52 PM #1920

Tom Held

Judy.............I can remember all those details because I  had so much fun playing music with Pat and the guys back in the late 60's. I miss those good times. I really wish we could all get together for a band reunion.

Cindy and I are going to listen to our grandson's (Corbin) heavy metal band on Dec. 16th. They are playing at the Robinson (Illinois) Bowling Alley. This is "the" hotspot in Robinson. Foghat, Black Oak Arkansas & The Little River Band have all played there in the past few years. I offered to sit-in with their band that night, but apparently they're not interested in playing Sam The Sham's "Wooly Bully" !

I might possibly get up the nerve to jump into the "mosh pit" and bang heads with a few "metal freaks" ! LOL

Patrick Grabbe

Hey Tom

Let me know when the reunion is and I'm there.  Those days in the 60', I wouldn't trade for all the tea in China. When those lights were shining on us on your patio and we were playing for 3 or 4 people, couldn't get any better than that.

I remember pretty much the way you do about the contests at the fairgrounds, that picture of Bob was outside, we did come in a very very, very close second place, but we still got our rear ends kicked. I think it was Curtis's drum roll that put them over the top. I really wanted to go to the State fair,I don't know why we didn't, that second year.

Grab,

Maybe we did not get to play the Battle Of The Bands at the State Fair, but we did play in Indy on a Saturday night. You have not forgotten playing at the Marrott Hotel at 25th & Fall Creek Pkwy. for the Ind State Youth Fellowship convention ? Think I recall us four (The Fab Four !) splitting a bottle of Four Roses and staying up till the wee hours of the morning.......yeah, those were good times.

PS. Can you let me know how ill Rex is ? I heard Mary quit her job to stay home and take care of him.

Also, checkout Youtube for Corvette songs: (1) "Bill Duzan with the Corvettes - Janice" .......... (2)"Corvettes Shaften".

I am guessing Pat Grabbe, Tom Held, Wayne Boberg, Sam Singleton,  Bill Posey, and the 6th I do not know.
