Donald Chandler

Sorry to interrupt, Gary...

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY to Kathy & Rabun.  Wow!!! 42 years!  If my math is right, you two were married very, very soon after the Class of 68 graduated.  Hope you and Rabun have a very special day today.  CELEBRATE BIG TIME!!!

Well, Gary… I did get my grass mowed before the rain came, but when it came, it was a real frog strangler.  As we used to say down on the dairy farm, "It was rainin' like a cow peein' on a flat rock."  Hope my farm humor doesn't offend anyone.  Late Friday, we got over two inches of rain here in about an hour, and it revealed, to my dismay, a ROOF LEAK directly over our foyer… drip, drip, drip… right through the foyer ceiling.   The leak came very close to soaking a 36" Ceramic Indian that Liz created about 20 years ago to honor her Native American ancestry.  I respectfully call him the "Warrior in the Foyer".  Anyway, no rain Saturday, so I checked out the attic and found the leak, and then climbed up on the roof with the roof cement to patch the leak.  Not exactly how I planned to spend my Saturday, but life is always full of surprises.  I’m just grateful I have a roof over my head to patch.  With all the scattered showers on the way this week, I guess I’ll find out if my roof repair works.

BRAVES WIN!!!  BRAVES WIN!!!  Another great comeback in the bottom of the ninth to beat L.A. and take 3 out of 4 from the Dodgers!!!  Even with all their injuries, they just seem to find a way to win.

BTW… I just LOVE signs, especially unusual ones or ones with spelling errors in them.  I saw a street sign the other day that read “Shcool Zone”.  I think maybe the one who painted that sign needs to spend a little more time in that “School Zone.”  Just sayin’.

Well... I think I'll open the back door and see if we can get a breeze through here, it's getting hot.  Back to you, Gary...

Gary Grice

Now Don, you are just assuming that Shcool Zone is a misspelling.  Maybe they just didn't have room to put in the ....  You know SH....Cool Zone!  Looks like a sign they might post in the Towney section of the Classic City!  Remember the QUIET HOSPITAL ZONE signs?  Anyway, your wish is my command ..... HERE"S YOUR SIGN!  Later.

Donald Chandler

HERE'S YOUR SIGN!....

Gary... this is one of my all time favorites!  I think I mentioned this one before, but I actually saw this sign, or one similar to it, in rural Kentucky.  Back atcha, brother...

Happy Birthday Vicki!  Hope you have a very blessed day.  Not much going on today.  I've got to find some good signs for Don - hope to post later.  Hope everyone is have a GREAT week.  Later.

Diane Harris (Moore)

First things first. Happy Birthday, Vicki! Hope it's great!

Not much time. I'm on the run with my sweet mother-in-law. I checked in to wish Vicki well wishes, and what do I find? No time to catch up on all the entries, but I will make time in a few days. I just want to say that just to get even with you guys I am going to show up one day in a "little black dress", and then you'll be sorry. You will be blinded, and it will serve you right! At some point, black loses the power to make you look slim, so it won't be pretty. Maybe I can get my sisters to join in the cause. Tsk, tsk, you guys. If I read in Online Athens about an accident on Millege, my first thoughts will be, "wonder which one it is? Gary or Jim?" Don, I know you are too dignified. We're related you know.

Gary Grice

Oh, Diane ... you tease!!  I've been looking for your dignified relative a road sign that would brighten his day.  I found this one that I understand was used in a trial by a now deceased politician.  He swore he was just obeying the law!  Anywho .... Don, HERE'S YOUR SIGN!  Later.

Connie Morgan (White)

Morning all..

Late happy birthday wishes Vicki!  Hope it was a good day.

Did you know you can get a shingles vaccine once you are 60?  I went to the health dept. and got mine on Tuesday.

Diane, we are so glad your cousin is UGA's new AD!!!!  I have heard nothing but good things about him.   From the pictures on Facebook, it looks like you and Dick and Ms. Tweet are having a great time.

I'm enjoying the jokes and sign pictures boys.

Don, the rain has managed to miss Crawford this week.  We could use some.

Today would have been Jim and my 38th. anniversary...  That was a hot August day in 1972!  No air-conditioning in the Church or at my parents home where the reception was.  It didn't much matter then (I guess because we were not used to a.c.)

Good wishes to all and have a great week-end!

Diane Harris (Moore)

Connie, many of us remember your wedding day in 1972. I just don't know where all those years since have gone. I am truly happy that I was able to meet Jim, and know him somewhat. He was a good man, and he left some mighty fine genes behind in those two sons of his. Genes that you perfected through your rearing of them. He would be very, very pleased, no doubt. Thinking of you with lots of love.

Yes, I'm kinda glad Greg M. got the job, too. I hope he will do a good job and make his mama and daddy proud. Don, you can claim kin, too, I suppose. He is my second cousin, so I don't know what that makes him to you. You also have to proudly claim kin to Ray, Kay, Linda and probably several others who I am related to on my daddy's side of the family.

Y'all have a fine day. Tweet has a couple of more days here, so I am attempting an adventure each day. That's easy. Pretending to be a good, healthy cook who takes care of son is hard!

Diane mentioned that Gary had posted some pun bait out there for me.  It worked.   I just got through reading the latest headlines up to now.   Gary you numbers would make any doctor proud.   Instead of a simple run this fall, you could come to Dayton, stay with us, and run the Air Force Marathon!   The only thing that I would ask is to take out a sizable insurance policy on you prior to the run.   Jimmy--could  you help me out here?

I've had a relatively uneventful summer.  I was on hold waiting for contracts to be finalized but it always takes longer when there are a number of lawyers involved.  That's all over now and I'll start traveling to Philadelphia each week for a few days over the rest of the year.   Although driving is a bit out of the question it could be worse. At least there is a direct flight from Dayton to Philly.

I'll try to be better at keeping on touch. I have so many memories of our times at OCHS and of each of your roles in my life.    Some days, I'd like to go back and relive a day from back then.  I guess that's what memories  are for.

All the best to each of you!

Dick

DICK!!! So good to hear from you! Yes I can help take care

of Gary's insurance needs! But, brother, you need to splain

to Diane that them dignified one's are the one's you got to

watch! And Diane I'm sure you and anyone of our Ladies

would give  them a run for their money! Black dress or not!

Dick when you and Gary have this big race, please alert

Ross so he can have the PARA MEDS there. Beth says all I

need do is tune into a Braves game to get the exercise I

need. Those guy going to cause me to have a heart attack.

And we haven't even gotten to a Georgia football games yet.

Hope you guys have a great day!

MARATHON!?! Who said anything about a marathon?  Maybe someday - but not this year.  Dick, I assume you and Diane will be running also .... right?  I do enjoy running but you have to really stay with it or you will loose your wind and its real embarassing crawling to the ambulance begging for oxygen .... so I hear.  I'm trying to build back up to a 5k.  Hopefully I can get Sherron to join me in a few runs this fall.  Anyone out there like to join us?  I'm not a fast runner, but then not slow either.  I guess I'm considered a half-fast runner.

Well, I got Dick back onboard with some puns, keep Don around with odd signs and keep Jim coming back with images of little black dresses.  I know there is someone out there who loves the old westerns and thought this might bring back some memories for all of us.

Those Old Westerns

I'm batching it for a couple of days and then off to join Sherron in North Carolina visiting two daughters and grandkids, so I'll be absent for a while.  Would someone keep the pot stirred while I'm away?  Hope you alll have a GREAT weekend!  Much Later!

Speaking of Ole West Movies, I had the pleasure of

seeing John Wayne in the Quiet Man Tuesday nite. It was,

has always been one of my favorite movies. Now that is

what I call a real actor! Made no difference what he was

in, it was great!

WESTERNS!!!...  I loved them growing up!   And Liz loves them too… maybe more than I do.  She still watches all the old ones, on Turner Classic Movies and American Movie Classics.  And Jim… she was watching some of John Wayne’s old movies just this past weekend.  I can still watch them IF they are in color...  I just can’t sit through the old black and white ones anymore.  I mentioned on this forum just a few weeks ago that Liz and I went to a Western Movie Memorabilia Show here in Atlanta over 20 years ago.  It was a lot of fun, and two of the old cowboys on Gary’s "Whatever Happened To..." video were at that show, and I took pictures of Liz with both of them.  That’s Lash LaRue in the top photo and Sunset Carson in the second photo.  Now this was in 1988 and they have both gone on to that big ranch in the sky since then.

One of my favorite cowboys of course was Roy Rogers.  And back in the 50’s he was probably the favorite of many little boys like me, and little girls too.  Five years ago, Liz and I went on a vacation that included several days in Branson, Missouri.  Have any of you been there?  It is very, very commercial, full of live shows, shopping, restaurants, museums, and things to see and do.  We went to see “The Shepherd of the Hills” in an outdoor theater and the Andy Williams Show (he still sings great).  But one of the highlights for us was visiting the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans Museum there.  It was so full of wonderful memorabilia from Roy and Dale’s life, including Trigger, Bullet and Buttermilk… the REAL ones… all “stuffed” for our viewing pleasure.  I once heard Roy in an interview say that Dale threatened to have him stuffed too if he died before she did.  The Museum also contained a theater show where Roy Rogers Jr. (Dusty Rogers) and his band performed a live show and concert of old classic western songs.  Roy Jr. hung around after the show and answered fan’s questions about growing up in the family with Roy and Dale.  He was a very nice guy and autographed a photo for us.  And he was happy to have photos made with anyone who wanted one and I got a picture of Liz with him too.  Don’t you think he looks a lot like his daddy?

By the way… I saw in the news where the Roy & Dale Museum & Theater in Branson closed and the memorabilia was sold at Christie's Auction House in New York just last month.  Check it out.    http://www.christies.com/LotFinder/searchresults.aspx?intSaleID=22613#action=paging&intSaleID=22613&sid=ff788092-80c9-46a2-b6c2-c2af0d632d47&pg=1  Trigger (lot #38) sold for $266,500... not bad for a dead horse.  Roy Jr. is now doing a live show at Mickey Gilley's Theater in Branson with his son (Roy & Dale's grandson) Dustin Roy Rogers.

Happy Trails, mates!  Have a great weekend!

By the way, Connie... I know this has to be a day of mixed emotions for you.  I did not have the honor of knowing your husband Jim, but I have no doubt that he was a fine man.  I know you must still miss him very much.  May God Bless your sweet memories of him on this special day and God bless you and your wonderful family.

Greetings and salutations on this wonderful Monday morning!  The Lord watched over us along I-85 yesterday as we safely returned from Hickory, NC.  While there, I saw one of those signs that Don would appreciate.  Unfortunately, it only showed up at night and I couldn't photograph.  It was at the Hickory Furniture Mart.  Apparently the "ory" light string was OOC so the sign read "HICK FURNITURE MART".  Or maybe it was just a ploy to increase business by appealing to a growing market segment.  I've been thinking about that "Used Cows" sign.  Isn't that redundant?  If they were un-used, wouldn't they be heifers?  Once "used" aren't they "cows"?  Maybe our resident dairy man will check in and clarify.  As I start thinking about retiring, I have to also consider that I might need a little additional income and I happened across the following ad.  I hesitate mentioning it for fear that one of my fellow classmates will rush to fill the opening before I can reconstitute my resume.  Anywho, here it is for your information and income opportunity.   Later.

AUGUST 23--The Department of Justice is seeking to hire linguists fluent in Ebonics to help monitor, translate, and transcribe the secretly recorded conversations of subjects of narcotics investigations, according to federal records.

A maximum of nine Ebonics experts will work with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Atlanta field division, where the linguists, after obtaining a “DEA Sensitive” security clearance, will help investigators decipher the results of “telephonic monitoring of court ordered nonconsensual intercepts, consensual listening devices, and other media”.  WHATYOUTALKIN'BOUT WILLIS?

I said I was going to comment on all the entries, but that it just too big of a job! I'll just say that I hope everyone out there is well.

I love all the photos, Don! You and Liz have had lots of fun through the years, and have pictures to prove it.

Gary, have you already gone and come back from your trip? I wish I could go back and check what you wrote, for I am easily confused. You wanted us to stir the pot for you while you were away, which sounded kinda shady, and very 1960s. Loved your signs. You know all the best websites!

I have absolutely, positively no news. Dick's mom flew home Sat., so I am going through withdrawal. She's sweet and loves me, and it's always nice to have someone like that around. Dick left today for Philadelphia, but comes home tomorrow night. He has been home all summer, but will be traveling again now. I'll gently remind him to check in more on our site.

After a very hot spell, I am enjoying having the windows open to wonderfully cool temperatures again. I was thinking about how I wish I could hear a whippoorwill. I always loved to hear them when I was growing up, and they take me back to my little house in Enterprise. I miss them so much that I even went online and played the sound of one of them calling. I am a sap, that's what I am.

Love to all.

Ah, Unicorns.  Have you ever wondered about unicorns?  I have.  I used to love the song:

A long time ago when the earth was green, There was more kinds of animals than you have ever seen.  There was cats and rats and elephants, as sure as you was born, but you're never gonna see no unicorn.

So why not?  Here's one theory:

And then there are those who still search for them:

A guy meets a hunter at the local pub.

"So, what do you hunt?" he asks.

"Unicorns," the hunter answers.

The guy was startled, but regains his composure and says, "Really? How do you do that?"

"I find a virgin and hire her to help me. The virgin sits around in the woods until a unicorn comes to her. When it does, I set off a snare."

"Boy, they must be hard to find. I've heard of them, but I've never seen one," says the guy.

"Yeah," replies the hunter.

"And there ain't many unicorns around, either!"

Well anywho ..... I hope you are all having a wonderful week.  Later.

Well mates, I almost CUSSED this afternoon... the BRAVES were leading the Colorado Rockies 10-1 in the third inning, and LOST the game 12-10.  Dag-nab-it!  I really needed church tonight.  :-)

I like the signs, Gary... so, for all of you who have ever been ticked off at someone who used a handicapped parking space when you knew they should NOT have... HERE'S YOUR SIGN...

Enjoy the rest of your week.

Man, that stinks about the Braves! What in the world happened?

Just wanted to say that I just saw on facebook that Teresa Burt Colwell has a new little granddaughter as of today. Little Addy was born down in Montgomery, AL, and her first glamor shot shows her to be a real beauty.

News of late from our gang has not been altogether happy, so it's good to pass along these little gems of joy.

Kathy, enjoy your respite up in those mountains. It's supposed to be 53 degrees here tomorrow morning, so we're having a little glimpse of fall, and I look forward to it.

Sleep well, my friends.
