ANNOUNCEMENTS

      Barbara Day Miller

May 16, 1947 – March 9, 2026

Barbara Day Miller, passed away peacefully on March 9, 2026, at the age of 78, after a short and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. She was surrounded by her husband and children.

Barbara was born on May 16, 1947, in Yonkers, New York, to James Rivers Day and Magda Irene Day. She grew up in Maywood, New Jersey, where she graduated from Bogota High School.

Barbara attended Valparaiso University in Indiana, graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. On the first day of freshman year, she met Jeff when he carried her suitcase to her dorm room. Although they did not begin dating until December of their senior year, that chance encounter began a partnership that would last nearly 56 years. Barbara and Jeff were married in March 1970.

The couple began their married life in New Jersey. Barbara first worked in New York City’s fashion district before pursuing her passion for education and teaching seventh grade in Maywood, New Jersey.

In 1977, Barbara and Jeff moved to Wisconsin to join the Miller family business, Better Brands Distributing in Germantown, where Barbara served as corporate secretary while raising their two children. Later in life, Barbara and Jeff split their time between Wisconsin and Copperleaf in Estero, Florida, where they spent the past 15 winters.

Barbara was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a proud grandmother. She treasured time with family and maintained lifelong friendships from her years at Valparaiso, in West Bend, and in Florida.

She lived a full and active life. Barbara volunteered as a “Pink Lady” at the hospital and supported activities at her children’s schools. She was an avid reader and member of several book clubs. Gardening brought her great joy, and the flowers at both homes were a point of pride—especially her beloved white hydrangeas, known as her “snowballs,” which frequently won ribbons at the county fair.

Her hobbies evolved over time: bridge and bowling in her younger years eventually gave way to Mah Jong and bocce in retirement. Barbara also followed the stock market so closely that family members often joked she had a side career as a day trader.

She loved traveling with Jeff, family, and friends—especially to warm destinations—and enjoyed long walks on the beach in Florida and power walks at the mall in Wisconsin. She adored her dogs over the years, including Samantha and Spencer, and more recently her granddogs, Hank and Clover.

Barbara cherished the many friendships she built throughout her life, including a close-knit group known as the “Cottage Girls” in the West Bend area.

She is survived by her husband, Jeffrey Miller; her sister, Patricia Pagenkopf (Jim); her son, Ryan Miller (Amy Turner) and their son Elliot (7); and her daughter, Stephanie Ely (Dennis) and their children Calder (16) and Catherine (13).

The family extends special thanks to the hospice teams in Florida and Wisconsin for their compassionate care, and to Angel Flight for helping bring Barbara home.

A private service will be held for immediate family at Trinity Lutheran Church, with a celebration of Barbara’s life planned at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Washington County Humane Society, the Copperleaf Charitable Foundation, or the National Pancreas Foundation.
