Douglas Wheeler

This is written by Wayne Hunt:

Douglas shares the same begining that Wayne Hunt posted on his page.

Wayne and I went in on the buddy system and did our six weeks of basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Basic training was a new awakening for us; we wondered if we had made the right decision. Graduation day arrived and we shook hands and embraced each other -- and that ended the buddy system.

Wayne went his way and I went mine. We never saw each other again while in uniform.

  • Basic Training June 9, to July 22, 1960:

Lackland  Military Training Center (ATC)  Lackland Air Force Base Texas

I checked in at the Army/Air Force recruiting center on Ponce de Leon Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia; little did I know what lay ahead at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. Six weeks of total brain washing, that made me feel like the lowest human being on earth. I will not go into all the details; but I was very glad when I graduated.

It was all business for the first two weeks and no fun. The next two weeks were not much better, but we did get some base liberty. We also got some off base liberty close to the end. We loaded up on a bus and headed to downtown San Antonio to see The Alamo and look around town.

I received my next assignment (orders); on the day of graduation from basic training; I was so glad and proud to graduate. I left Lackland Air Force Base on July 22, 1960 for a 15 day leave at home.

  • Douglas retired from the USAF after serving for more than 25 years. He survived three tours in Vietnam and retired in Arizona where he lived untill his passing on January 21, 2012.

I hope to add more information about Doulgas as it become available.

To a loyal and dedicated Airman.
