Steve is a 1972 graduate of Lincoln Southeast. While attending high school he was involved in orchestra, wrestling, and S Club. He received the Southeast Distinguished Alumni award in 2008 for his outstanding achievements in the fields of education and computer science.
 
Steve graduated from the University of Nebraska with a BA in English. After teaching English and coaching wrestling for several years, he returned to school and earned an M.S. in Computer Science at Washington University in St Louis and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from William and Mary. He is currently a Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at UNL as well as Director of GC Image, LLC.
 
Steve was a founding director of Internet Nebraska Corporation, one of the first ISPs in Nebraska. He is also the founding director and President of GC Image, LLC, which provides software for analytical chemistry. His research interests include informatics and chemometrics for multi-dimensional chemical separations and three-dimensional mass-spectrometric imaging as well as image restoration, resampling, and data fusion for infrared images and remotely sensed multispectral data. He has authored or coauthored over fifty journal and book publications, made over 120 conference publications and presentations, and participated in nearly two dozen funded research projects.
 
Steve has served on the Academic Senate and Innovation Campus Advisory Committee at UNL and was a member of the Technology and Strategic Planning Committees for Lincoln Public Schools. He has received numerous professional awards including recogniziation as Outstanding Researcher for the College of Engineering and Technology, Technology Professor of the Year, and the Innovation, Development and Engagement award from the University of Nebraska.
 
He is a volunteer member of the St. Vincent De Paul Society — a Catholic lay organization whose members seek spiritual growth through service to those in need.
 
The Southeast teacher who had the biggest influence on his life was Mr. Nickerson.
 
Steve’s family includes wife, Ellen, and children, Patrick, Katie, Mark, and Bridget.
