The first time I met Egbert was in our study hall.  I introduced myself and I told him that I knew he was new to Southeast.  I asked what was his name and he said that I would know as soon as the first football game was played.  He said that his name would be in the headlines of the newspaper.  Well, sure enough his name was in the headlines and he was one of our "stars" for the next 2 years.

We were pretty good friends through our high school days and the first year of UNL.  I was also friends with his sister, Beryl. While on my search for Egbert, I found Beryl and we had a telephone conversation.  She said a few years ago while Coach Solich was the Head Coach of the Cornhuskers, he visited Columbus, Ohio.  Beryl and Egbert went to where he was speaking and had a conversation with him.  She said he was so happy to see them.  Coach said he had thought about Egbert through the years and had wondered what he was doing.  She said it was a wonderful memory for her and Egbert.

Rest in peace friend

I admired Egbert's talents as a football player. He was also a sweet person. We were in the musical Li'l Abner together and I will never forget how much fun we had doing that. I don't think he made it to our ten or twenty year reunion and I always wondered what happened to him. I was very sorry to hear of his passing. I will never forget him.

What a great guy to hand the ball off to for the years we played football together. He always believed that he had a chance to make it all the way to the end zone no matter how good the opponent was. Great laugh and smile that was contagious for all of the team. It was a real privilege to be on the same team with Egbert.
