Our Educational Vision
St. Xavier’s as a Jesuit school is based on the conviction that God is personally and ceaselessly at work in each human person, moulding and shaping the person through others. Initially God works primarily through parents. St. Xavier’s cooperates with parents in this on-going formation of their children. Each child is received in trust and with reverence since each is uniquely loved and gifted by God and has a whole history of God’s direct action in him/her over several years. St. Xavier’s works to cooperate with God and parents by regular exchange between students, parents and teachers. This is an essential step for continuity between home and school formation.
Jesuit education implies an on-going, continuous interplay between the five moments of context, experience, reflection, action and evaluation between parents, students and teachers. This is not to lead to mere information but to appropriation, integration into the very activity of God within the created reality of our world but especially within each person. This then leads from information to transformation, to conformation and so to integration, and to confirmation within each student as St. Xavier’s seeks to foster those desires that God has already planted in each student. The School by deepening a sense of wonder, reverence, creativity, fidelity, communication, openness to and charity to each other and to the whole world seeks to work for the transformation of the complete person.
So teachers approach the classroom as one does a temple, as one moving on holy ground. Teacher-student relationships take time to develop and deepen and need a climate of love and trust. There must also be continuity between teachers and students both within the classroom and in the wider school environment. Over the years St Xavier’s has tried to provide an environment that is basically sacred, and has a framework of discipline that is flexible yet supportive, a freedom that allows students to learn even from their mistakes, to develop into person moulded by the correlatives of freedom and responsibility.
