Paul was one of my best friends while attending grades 1-5 at the old Lincoln School. He lived with his grandparents just a few doors down the street from the school. I remember him as always having a smile on his face, a funny tale to tell and an infectious laugh. He was douible jointed and it used to frustrate the hell out of me when he would challenge me to do something phusical and his unique joints would lend him advantage. :-( During the summer of our Freshman year...Paul went swimming with some friends at the old Wash...He dove in and did not surface. It was the first death that I remember as a young person...missed my friend then and still miss him today. Rest in Peace good buddy.

We were swimming side by side and I swam ahead...last i saw Paul. No struggle, no call for help...

It was a very sad day and hard to wrap our minds around Paul not surfacing, because he could hold his breath longer than any of us that swam @ the "wash". He would disappear and then something would grab your foot ! The water was spring fed and very very cold and the deeper you went - the colder it got... cramp water :( Troop A was across rt. 5 and they would try & catch us swimming ... we would be walking away dripping wet :)  Paul was also an outstanding drummer !!!

Several comments on Paul recently surfaced on this website and reminded me of one of the nicest kids I ever knew. My specific recollection deals with gym-class football where I was QB and Paul was the finest wide-receiver you could ask for. I was no threat to Tom Briggs but could throw the ball a long way. Fortunately for me, all I had to do was lay it out long and old reliable Paul would make me look good by making one of his patented acrobatic catches. At the time of his drowning, I was truly devastated ... losing a great receiver while BHS lost one of its finest citizens.

Paul, Alan Heale, and myself, were walking to the "wash", when Alan said he needed to stop by his house which was through a hole in the fence behind Lincoln school. Alan and I went to his house while Paul said he would meet us there. That was the last time we ever seen Paul other then when they were putting him on the stretcher. Won't ever get that event out of my mind.

Paul Minardi was in St. Joseph's Drum Corps with me and that is where we first became friends. He and I also became close in school. Paul had dropped out of drum corps and I had talked him into returning. There was a competition in town that year and I had convinced him to attend rehearsal at Austin Park. Paul never showed up for rehearsal that afternoon. Later I received the news that he drowned that day. I was haunted for years after that. I was young and that was the first time I had death happen that close to me. I blamed myself because I felt it was my fault that Paul decided to swim, instead of rejoining the drum corps.
