Not everyone on either of these lists knew Ed Redmond personally or knew of him, but when the news of his death was shared with me yesterday I was crushed. I have known Ed as the super-helpful, knowledgeable, always positive and simply fantastic person that he was from probably the late 1980s/early 1990s -- whenever it was that I made my first in-person visit to the Geography and Map Division of the Library of Congress and the Reading Room there. I will personally miss him greatly.
Those of you on the MAPS-L list likely will remember from time to time Ed sharing his knowledge about a map or atlas in the Division's collection (or link to a website showing the image(s)) to help answer someone's question posted. An example of just how much he enjoyed sharing both the collections held that he had the privilege to work with at LC G&M and his knowledge on historical topics.

PASSING OF FORMER WMS PRESIDENT, ED REDMOND
We are sad to announce the passing of Ed Redmond this past weekend (January 30-31, 2021) at age 58 in Alexandria. He had been in declining health for the past months. Ed was a 30-year veteran in the Geography & Map Division at the Library of Congress, and served numerous roles within the Washington Map Society, including Secretary, Vice President (3 times), and President (3 times). He was especially proud of his extensive research on the maps of George Washington. Ed will be greatly missed by the WMS and the map community at large. A remembrance will appear in the Spring 2021 edition of The Portolan, to be mailed in mid-March.
Ed contributed this biographic note to the Fall 2014 Portolan:
ED REDMOND: Position: Map Librarian, Geography and Map Division, 1989-present. Comments: Ed joined the staff of the Library of Congress Map Division in 1989 and has been associated with the Washington Map Society since his early days at LC. In 2014, Ed was elected to his second term as WMS Vice President and is our current Program Chair. Over the years, he has served in nearly every capacity including President. In his full-time job, Ed is currently the Curator, Vault Collections, Geography and Map Division, Library of Congress. “Personally, I am not a map collector but am still a map fiend. Professionally, we use the vast resources of the Library of Congress to assist in the interpretation of specific maps, collections, or using maps to illustrate subjects. This assistance ranges from antiquarian maps and globes to modern large-scale maps and everything in between, including teaching teachers how to incorporate maps into classroom instruction.” Ed also serves as the main liaison between the Geography and Map Division and the Library’s Interpretative Programs Office (Exhibits) and Conservation Division. “Library exhibits are fascinating. In our case, we suggest maps from the collections to best illustrate various themes in the exhibit narrative developed by the Exhibits Office. However, when you are competing against some of Library’s other very significant Special Collections, not everybody can win. I am proud to say that last year’s extremely successful Civil War in America exhibit was chock full of maps; including the very first and very last items in the exhibit.”
