GARY NORTH
1939-2013
Long-time WMS member Gary North passed away on October 29, 2013 at age 74. Born in Schenectady, New York, and a 1962 graduate of Davis and Elkins College, Gary had a distinguished career as a geographer, cartographer, and scientist. As an Air Force officer, he worked with the Strategic Air Command. As a scientist he worked for the Raytheon Company developing radar surveys. He closed his federal career as a senior executive with the U.S. Geological Survey where he assisted with the Earth Resources Observation Systems Program and the National Cartographic Information Center. Gary was also a great benefactor of the Geography and Map Division at the Library of Congress where he had been instrumental in the acquisition of state-of-the-art documentation of ocean floor mapping by Bruce Heezen and Marie Tharp, and creating a research data base of these first-of-a-kind maps, drawings, and precision depth recordings.
