RICHARD B. ARKWAY

1927-2014

Richard B. Arkway, 87, a leading dealer in antiquarian maps and rare books, died on July 10, 2014 in Manchester, VT following a long illness.  An early and long-time member of the Washington Map Society, he was the son of the late Olga (Bunim) and Samuel Arkway and was born on February 7, 1927 in Brooklyn, NY where he spent his childhood.  He graduated from the Ethical Culture Fieldston School and the University of Connecticut.  After a career in retail menswear, Arkway turned his hobby of map collecting into a successful business, first in Providence, Rhode Island and then in New York City.  In time, Richard B. Arkway, Inc. became one of the most respected antiquarian bookshops in the world and many important transactions in the trade took place there. The 69 catalogs he issued between 1982 and 2008 are noted for the high quality of their content and their scholarship; they are still revered in the trade.  He was well-known for the depth of his knowledge and especially for his integrity.  Those who worked for him often went on to establish rare-book businesses of their own.  He is survived by his wife, Angela Arkway, and others.
